Chapter 5 - The Dawn of Empty Pockets

The descent from grace took less than forty minutes.

By 3:15 AM, Vanessa was sitting in a narrow metal wheelchair, clutching the crying baby against her chest, her face red and swollen from sobbing.

Two orderly staff members wheeled her down the service elevator, bypassing the grand marble lobby where private pavilion patients were discharged.

They brought her to Ward 2-South, a brightly lit, noisy communal maternity unit where four women shared a single curtain-partitioned room.

The air did not smell of imported white lilies; it smelled of floor disinfectant, microwaved instant oatmeal, and industrial laundry soap.

"I cannot stay here!" Vanessa wailed, looking at the cracked vinyl armchair provided for visitors.

"Daniel, look at this place! The curtains are stained! The woman in Bed A is snoring!"

"Shut up, Vanessa! Just keep your voice down!" Daniel hissed through clenched teeth, leaning against the cold plaster wall.

His tailored suit was crumpled, his white shirt unbuttoned at the collar, and his eyes bloodshot with mounting panic.

He had spent the last hour desperately calling every executive on his contact list.

His Chief Operating Officer had not answered.

His General Counsel’s phone had forwarded directly to Miriam Cole’s law firm.

And the mobile banking app on his phone continued to show a single, terrifying red balance: $0.00.

At 5:45 AM, the first gray light of dawn crept through the barred windows of the communal ward.

Daniel’s phone buzzed with an incoming email notification.

The sender was The Board of Directors, Vance Vanguard Technologies Inc.

Daniel tapped the screen with a trembling thumb.

NOTICE OF EMERGENCY EXTRAORDINARY RESOLUTION:

Be advised that pursuant to the Series A Preferred Voting Rights held by The Halcyon Endowment Trust, an emergency resolution was adopted at 4:00 AM EST.

Effective 8:00 AM today, Daniel Vance is removed from the position of Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board.

All corporate powers, administrative privileges, and executive signing authorities are hereby terminated.

A formal demand for immediate repayment of the $14,200,000 convertible secured note has been registered with the Southern District Court of New York.

You are instructed to surrender all company property, including keys, security tokens, and corporate vehicles, to building security by 10:00 AM.

"No... no, no, no," Daniel breathed, his knees going soft as he slumped into the plastic visitor’s chair.

"Daniel? What is it now?" Vanessa demanded from behind the curtain, trying to nurse the screaming infant.

"What did the board say? Are they sending the car for us?"

Daniel didn't answer.

He slowly lifted his head, staring blankly at the beige linoleum floor.

His mother’s quiet voice echoed inside his skull, louder than the baby’s cries, louder than Vanessa’s nagging complaints.

“Then don’t take anything that belongs to this filthy old woman…”

He had thought she was talking about her meager pension, her cheap knitted blankets, her worthless sentimental junk.

He had genuinely believed that he was a self-made titan of modern software.

He had forgotten that every single contract he had ever signed in his twenties had been reviewed by Miriam Cole.

He had forgotten that the mysterious initial wire transfer that saved his prototype from bankruptcy had originated from an account called HALCYON-ONE.

He had convinced himself that his mother was an embarrassing relic of a past he needed to bury under private club memberships and designer clothes.

"She owns it all," Daniel whispered into his hands.

"What did you say?" Vanessa pulled back the flimsy fabric curtain, her hair a tangled mess, her designer silk robe dragging along the ward floor.

"What did you just say, Daniel?"

"My mother," Daniel said, his voice rising in hysterical realization.

"She owns the company."

"She owns the shares."

"She owns the penthouse on Park Avenue."

"She owns the car."

"She owns everything, Vanessa. Everything!"

Vanessa stared at him, her lips parting in utter, unadulterated horror.

"You told me your family was dead money! You told me you built Vanguard from scratch in a garage!"

"I did build the software!" Daniel yelled, oblivious to the nurses glaring at him from the hallway station.

"But she funded the entity! She held the preferred stock! I never looked at the incorporation covenants because Miriam Cole was Arthur’s family lawyer!"

"You idiot!" Vanessa screamed, heedless of the baby in her arms.

"You brought me into this? You let me push her? You let me call her filthy?"

"You were the one who told me to get rid of her!" Daniel shouted back, his face turning purple with helpless rage.

"You said she smelled like grease! You said her coat would embarrass your mother at the baptism!"

"Because you told me she had nothing!" Vanessa shrieked, tears washing away the remaining mascara into dark streaks down her cheeks.

"You let me insult a woman who holds the deed to our home?"

Before Daniel could retaliate, two city marshals accompanied by an NYPD officer appeared at the entrance of Ward 2-South.

The lead marshal held a clipboard with a certified bright pink warrant attached to the front.

"Daniel Vance?" the marshal asked, checking the photograph pinned to his clipboard.

Daniel stood up slowly, his limbs feeling like wet cement.

"Yes?"

"I am serving you with an emergency Notice of Eviction and Asset Sequestration issued by New York County Civil Court."

"The residential lease for Penthouse 14B at 740 Park Avenue has been terminated by the primary deed holder for gross lease violation."

"Locksmiths are currently changing the cylinders on the residence doors."

"You have twenty-four hours to coordinate with the building superintendent to retrieve personal clothing and infant necessities under armed escort."

"Furthermore, this order includes the immediate surrender of keys for the 2024 Mercedes-Maybach registered to Vance Vanguard Fleet Services."

Daniel reached into his pocket with numb, robotic movements.

He pulled out the heavy chrome key fob of the luxury car and dropped it into the marshal’s outstretched hand.

"Where are we supposed to go?" Vanessa sobbed, clutching the baby against her chest, looking around the noisy, chaotic public ward.

"Where are we supposed to sleep tonight, Daniel?"

Daniel looked down at his empty hands, the hands that had refused to lift his sixty-year-old mother off the cold floor twelve hours ago.

Outside, the morning traffic of Manhattan roared to life, thousands of ordinary people heading to work to pay for their humble lives.

The empire was gone.

The golden suit was an empty shell.
