Chapter 5 - THE EMPTY KITCHEN: TAKING BACK MY HOME AND STARTING THE WAR

Julian didn't argue. He didn't threaten me. He didn't try to puff out his chest or play the dominant husband anymore.

The illusion of his control had completely shattered, leaving behind a pathetic, sweating coward who realized that his greed had finally trapped him in a cage of his own making.

Without a single word, he turned on his heel, walked past Chloe without glancing at her, and hurried up the stairs toward the master bedroom to pack his things.

Chloe sat on the sofa, her shoulders shaking with quiet, miserable tears.

“Clara... I am so sorry,” she whimpered, looking up at me with red, swollen eyes. “I was weak... I was stupid... please don't ruin us.”

“You sat beside me in the pediatric ICU while my son was dying, Chloe,” I said, my voice cutting through her tears like a razor blade. “You held my hand at his funeral. And all the while, you were planning to steal my home and raise your bastard child in my dead son’s room.”

I pointed toward the front door.

“Pack your bags and get out of my sight before I have you thrown off my property for trespassing.”

Chloe scrambled off the sofa, grabbing her designer handbag and her car keys, and bolted out the front door, slamming it behind her so hard the decorative wreath on the exterior shook.

Silence returned to Hawthorne Lane.

The house was quiet, filled with the ghosts of the life I had built, the memories of my grandmother, and the heartbreaking echo of my little boy’s laughter echoing down the hallway.

I walked into the kitchen.

There, beside the sink, was Leo’s small plastic blue cup.

I picked it up, cradling it in my palms, and finally allowed the hot tears to spill over my cheeks. I missed my son with every fiber of my being. The pain in my chest was still unbearable, a jagged wound that would never fully heal.

But as I wiped my eyes and looked around my clean, quiet kitchen, I knew one thing for certain.

Julian and Chloe thought they had won when they buried my boy.

They thought they could sweep me aside and take everything I loved.
