Chapter 6 - THE GHOST FROM THE MARKETING AGENCY: UNRAVELING THE TRUTH BEHIND THE EXPLOSION

Three weeks after the breakup, my phone rang with an unknown number while I was in the middle of diagnosing a stubborn network latency issue. Assuming it was HR or another corporate formality, I answered impatiently.

"Leo? Oh, thank god you picked up. Please don't hang up."

It wasn't HR. It was Chloe, one of Megan’s closest colleagues from the boutique marketing agency where she worked. Her voice sounded shaky, laced with genuine distress and a heavy dose of guilt.

"Chloe? How did you get this number?" I asked, frowning.

"Megan’s phone is on her kitchen counter; she left it behind when she went out," Chloe rushed out, speaking fast as if afraid I would disconnect. "Look, Leo, I know everything that happened at the Drake Hotel was a complete disaster. But... there’s something you need to know about why she snapped like that."

I gripped the edge of my desk. "Why she snapped? She chose to get blackout drunk and humiliate me in front of my entire company."

"She didn't just get drunk because she was stressed about a client, Leo," Chloe whispered, her voice dropping lower. "The day before the holiday party, Megan found out she was being passed over for the creative director position at our agency. Not just passed over—her boss gave the promotion to an intern she despised, and mocked her portfolio in front of the entire executive team."

I sat in silence, processing the information. "That’s horrible, Chloe. But that still doesn't explain why she decided to destroy my career to make herself feel better."

"That’s the part you don't know," Chloe continued, her voice trembling. "Megan’s entire identity was wrapped up in you being the golden boy at Tech Drive. When you got your senior project manager promotion in the spring, she felt like she was falling behind. She wanted to shine at that party so bad, but when she saw how respected you were—how much the executives liked you, how easily you fit into that world while she was drowning professionally—her jealousy ate her alive."

Chloe paused, taking a breath before dropping the final bomb. "She didn't lose control by accident, Leo. In the cab on the way to the hotel, she literally told me that if she couldn't have a successful career breakthrough that night, she was going to make sure nobody else in the room—especially you—was allowed to feel successful either. She wanted to drag you down to her level so you'd be forced to depend on her completely."

The words echoed in the quiet basement office. Every piece of the puzzle clicked into place with horrifying clarity. It wasn't an accident. It wasn't just alcohol. It was a calculated, narcissistic sabotage born out of bitter envy.

"Thank you for telling me, Chloe," I said quietly. "I appreciate you having the courage to make this call."

"I just couldn't let you walk around thinking you did something wrong," Chloe said softly before hanging up.

I set my phone down on the desk. The last lingering shreds of guilt, doubt, or second-guessing vanished into thin air. I wasn't just free from Megan; I had survived an emotional predator who wore charm like a mask.
