Chapter 6 - Cracking the Alibi

Back in the NCIS interrogation room, the atmosphere had shifted from tense investigation to an outright interrogation showdown. My mother sat at the metal table once more, but this time, her cold, defiant composure was beginning to crack. The designer handbag she had clutched like a shield earlier sat on the floor, and her manicured fingers twitched nervously against the cold steel surface.

Agent Vance slid a certified copy of the two-million-dollar trust document right across the center of the table, letting it stop directly in front of her hands.

She stared down at the crisp paper, her breath hitching slightly, though she stubbornly refused to look up.

"Recognize this, Mrs. Miller?" Vance asked, his voice dripping with cool, authoritative ice. "It's your late father's mineral rights trust. The one assigned exclusively to Olivia on her twenty-five birthday. The one you and Richard tried desperately to get your hands on tonight by staging a violent home invasion inside a federal jurisdiction zone."

My mother swallowed hard, forcing her chin up with a defensive scowl. "I don't know what you're talking about. That money belongs to our family! Olivia is an ungrateful, rebellious girl who ran away and abandoned us. We just wanted to talk some sense into her, to get her to sign over what rightfully belongs to her mother!"

"Talk some sense into her by breaking down her door at two in the morning, shattering her arm, and leaving her for dead?" Commander Grant interjected from the corner of the room, his voice booming with restrained fury. "That's not a family conversation, ma'am. That's a felony assault carried out with premeditated intent."

"We didn't want to hurt her!" she finally snapped, her voice rising in defensive panic as the thin veneer of innocence shattered entirely. "Richard just lost his temper! He gets like that when he drinks, you know how he is! But she pushed him! She always pushes him with her smart mouth and her Navy attitude!"

"And Master Chief Vance?" Agent Vance pressed smoothly, leaning forward over the table. "Did she 'push' him into illegally logging into secure military intranet servers to download classified deployment schedules and security clearance schedules for a bribe?"

My mother went completely rigid. Her eyes widened in genuine shock. "I... I don't know any Master Chief. I don't know anything about computers or military networks!"

"Really?" Vance asked, tapping a finger on a second file containing phone records and encrypted chat logs pulled from her device. "Because our cyber division recovered encrypted messaging threads between your phone and an encrypted burner account operated by Master Chief Vance. You met him last Tuesday at a diner off Route 58. You handed him a flash drive containing fifty thousand dollars in cash—provided by Richard's construction business line of credit—and in exchange, he gave you the digital access keys, the base gate bypass codes, and Olivia's exact off-base residential coordinates."

She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. Her face turned an ash-gray color as she realized the absolute depth of the trap she had walked into.

"You didn't just help Richard assault a United States service member," Grant said coldly, stepping into the harsh glow of the overhead light. "You committed federal treason by conspiring to compromise base security infrastructure for personal financial gain. You aided and abetted a known violent felon in breaching a military-adjacent residential zone. You are facing federal conspiracy charges that carry up to thirty years in a federal penitentiary."

"Thirty years?" she whispered, the color draining entirely from her cheeks as the terrifying reality of her actions finally crashed down upon her. "No... no, you can't do that. I'm her mother! She has to help me!"

She turned her panicked gaze toward the observation window, knowing I was standing just on the other side of the glass watching every second of her collapse.

"Olivia!" she cried out toward the wall, though her voice was muffled by the thick acoustic glass. "Olivia, please! Tell them it was a mistake! Tell them we're family!"

I watched her through the tinted glass, my heart surprisingly calm. The little girl inside me who had spent years hiding in terror waiting for permission to exist was finally gone, replaced by a disciplined, resilient Navy medic who knew how to survive the worst storms life could throw.

"She's done," I murmured softly to Agent Vance, turning away from the glass. "She made her choice the moment she stood in that doorway and watched him try to destroy me."
