Chapter 2 - The Alibi and the Ally

When I opened my eyes, the world was a sterile cage of white. White curtains. White lights. White bandages wrapped tightly around skin that felt like it was still trapped in the flames. Every breath sent jagged waves of agony through my chest, but my mind was perfectly, dangerously clear.

Outside my hospital curtain, a smooth, practiced voice drifted in. Daniel. It was the same charming, weary tone that had fooled judges, clients, and neighbors for years.

“My wife has always been clumsy,” he sighed to the attending doctor, managing to sound like a long-suffering, devoted husband. “She dropped a pot of soup on herself.”

A heavy silence followed. Then, the doctor’s voice—cool, sharp, and entirely unconvinced. “You're saying she accidentally created burn patterns almost entirely across her back and shoulders?”

Daniel chuckled softly, a sound that made my skin crawl. “She must've twisted while she fell. She gets flustered very easily.”

Right on cue, Vivian sniffled dramatically into a tissue. “We kept telling her not to cook when she was tired. Poor thing never listens.”

I closed my eyes, a grim satisfaction blooming beneath the pain. They were walking right into the trap. Daniel truly believed he had outsmarted me. He believed the fortune he had spent the last two years manipulating away from me was finally his. Six months ago, he had proudly watched me sign the documents transferring control of my late father’s massive irrevocable trust to him.

What his arrogance had blinded him to was the missing page numbers. I had spotted his altered paperwork immediately. While he gloated internally, I had quietly substituted modified copies. The genuine, untouchable originals remained locked inside my bank's secure vault, sitting alongside recorded conversations, hidden financial records, and a specific set of trigger instructions.

Footsteps approached my bed. The curtain pulled back, revealing Dr. Lena Ortiz.

Lena didn't look at Daniel. She looked at me. She gently touched my wrist once—our old college signal. I’ve got you. You're safe.

Then, she turned toward my husband. The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees. “Before the detectives arrive,” Lena said, her voice cutting through the room like a scalpel, “perhaps you'd like to explain why your wife's hidden kitchen camera recorded everything that happened this evening?”

The silence that followed was louder than my scream had been. Daniel's face drained of color. Vivian stumbled backward, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.

Then, three firm strikes knocked against the hospital door.
