Chapter 7 - The Downfall of Melissa and the Betrayal in Holding

While Victor sat rotting in the federal detention center, waiting for his racketeering trial, his former accomplice was learning a very hard lesson about criminal loyalty.

Melissa sat in a small, windowless interrogation room at the FBI Chicago Field Office, wearing a gray prison jumpsuit that completely clashed with her dyed blonde hair and acrylic nails.

Across the metal table sat Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Sterling, flanked by two federal agents.

“Miss Hayes, let’s go over the timeline of the Cayman Island transfers one more time,” Attorney Sterling said calmly, tapping a pen against a transcription pad.

“I already told you everything!” Melissa shrieked, her voice cracking as she slammed her cuffed hands onto the table.

“Victor forced me to do it! He told me if I didn't set up those shell companies, he would ruin my life and kick me out of his penthouse! I’m just a victim here!”

A federal agent standing near the door snorted quietly.

“A victim who drove a brand-new Porsche paid for with embezzled employee health insurance premiums?” the agent remarked dryly.

“Miss Hayes,” Attorney Sterling said, his tone turning razor-sharp.

“Let’s review the cooperation agreement your own defense attorney negotiated. The agreement states that leniency is strictly contingent upon complete, unvarnished truth and the surrender of all illicitly obtained assets. We already have the bank records showing you transferred forty thousand dollars into your mother’s personal account yesterday morning.”

Melissa’s face drained of all color.

She opened her mouth to protest, but no words came out.

“You lied to federal investigators, obstructed a court-ordered asset freeze, and attempted to flee the jurisdiction,” Sterling continued, closing his folder with a definitive snap.

“The government is officially withdrawing your cooperation plea deal. You will be tried as a full co-conspirator alongside Mr. Hale.”

Melissa slumped forward, bursting into hysterical, sloppy tears.

She had thought dating a successful restaurant owner would buy her a lifetime of luxury, effortless parties, and VIP treatment.

Instead, her greed had tied her permanently to a sinking ship captained by a desperate criminal.

When the marshals hauled her out of the interrogation room and led her down the concrete hallway to the holding cells, she happened to pass the temporary transfer booth where Victor Hale was being led in the opposite direction.

Victor looked terrible.

His prison jumpsuit was wrinkled, his hair was messy, and the smug, arrogant aura that had defined his twenty-year reign of terror was completely gone.

When he spotted Melissa walking past in handcuffs, his eyes bulged with fury.

“You!” Victor roared, lunging forward despite the heavy chains binding his wrists and ankles.

“You stupid, selfish bitch! You leaked the offshore account passwords to the feds! You traded me out to save your own skin!”

“Me?!” Melissa shrieked back, tears of rage streaming down her face as she tried to claw at him.

“You’re the one who dragged me into this mess! You promised me a penthouse and millions of dollars! You’re a broke, pathetic criminal, Victor! I hope you rot in federal prison for the rest of your pathetic life!”

The marshals instantly stepped between them, shoving Victor back toward his holding cell and pulling a screaming Melissa down the corridor.

The bitter, toxic partnership built on stolen recipes, illegal labor, and mutual exploitation had finally imploded in the most fitting way possible—with both of them blaming each other for the ruin they had earned together.
