Chapter 13 - Dismantling the Dynasty

Evan stared at the yellowed parchment resting on his hospital blanket as if it were an unexploded grenade.
Mia looked from the document up to Damon Marino’s face.
The ruthless mafia boss who commanded dozens of armed soldiers showed no anger, no jealousy, and no desire for violence.
His dark eyes held only the profound exhaustion of a man whose entire worldview had been shattered in a single night.
“Why would your father leave the family empire to me?” Evan asked, his voice strained.
“Because my father knew that I was too much like him,” Damon said quietly, pulling a chair over and sitting beside the bed.
“My father was a monster, Evan.”
“He understood power, violence, and intimidation, but he also understood that the world was changing.”
“He watched you grow up choosing books over handguns and computer code over extortion rackets.”
“In the final months before he died in federal prison, my father wrote this codicil.”
Damon tapped the heavy seal on the legal document.
“The terms are explicit.”
“Upon Salvatore Marino’s death, the entire syndicate was to be placed into a blind trust under your sole administration.”
“Your explicit mandate in this will was to liquidate every illicit enterprise, settle all outstanding family debts, and convert the assets into clean, legitimate commercial entities.”
“And there is a specific clause regarding the Collins family.”
Mia looked up sharply.
“My family?”
Damon looked directly into Mia’s eyes with solemn respect.
“Forty percent of the liquidated value of the Marino empire was bequeathed to the surviving heirs of Frank Collins as legal restitution for his wrongful death.”
The words hit the hospital room with the weight of an avalanche.
Evan’s jaw went slack.
Mia clutched Evan’s hand, unable to process the scale of the revelation.
“Julian knew about this will twenty years ago,” Damon continued, his voice cold with contempt for his imprisoned uncle.
“Julian had the family attorney murdered and stole this document from my father’s personal safe.”
“Julian spent two decades convincing me that our duty was to expand the family’s criminal empire through blood and steel.”
“He kept me as his blunt weapon while he embezzled millions through offshore laundering accounts.”
“When you began digging into the digital ledgers two years ago, Evan, Julian wasn't just afraid of going to prison.”
“He was terrified that you would find this will and take away everything he stole.”
Evan looked down at the document, his fingers lightly brushing the embossed Marino crest.
“What happens now, Damon?” Evan asked.
“The federal task force has the ledgers from locker forty-four.”
“Julian will spend the rest of his natural life inside ADX Florence.”
“What happens to you?”
Damon leaned back in his chair, folding his scarred hands over his knee.
“I signed a proffer agreement with the United States Attorney thirty minutes ago.”
Evan’s eyes widened in disbelief.
“You turned state’s evidence?”
“I gave them the entire distribution network on the eastern seaboard,” Damon replied without hesitation.
“I gave them the corrupt judges, the precinct captains Julian bought, and the smuggling routes through the harbor.”
“I am liquidating every warehouse, every shell corporation, and every illicit property associated with the Marino name.”
“The federal government will seize sixty percent of the proceeds as asset forfeiture.”
“The remaining funds will be transferred to a private, clean trust established in Mia’s name for the benefit of your child.”
Mia shook her head, tears stinging her eyes.
“I don't want mafia money, Damon.”
“It isn't mafia money, Mia,” Damon said gently, his voice unexpectedly warm.
“It is your father’s justice, delayed by twenty years of corruption.”
“It is the legacy of Frank Collins, ensuring that his daughter and his grandchild never have to worry about rent, medical bills, or eviction notices ever again.”
Damon stood up, straightening his dark jacket.
“The Marino crime syndicate ceases to exist as of this morning.”
“The men who worked for me have been paid their severance and ordered to leave Brookfield permanently.”
“The gates of the Marino estate are locked.”
“By the end of the month, the mansion will be surrendered to the county land bank to be converted into a public children’s medical center.”
Evan looked at his cousin with deep, quiet gratitude.
“Where will you go, Damon?”
Damon looked out the hospital window toward the gray dawn breaking over the Brookfield skyline.
“I have to plead guilty to two counts of federal conspiracy.”
“The prosecutor recommended a five-year sentence in a minimum-security facility in upstate New York.”
“Five years is a small price to pay to wipe the blood off my hands.”
Damon walked over to the bed, placing a heavy hand on Evan’s uninjured shoulder.
“You were the only Marino who had the courage to live an honest life, cousin.”
“Make sure you build something clean with it.”
Damon turned to Mia, offering a respectful nod.
“Take care of him, Mia.”
“And make sure that baby grows up never knowing what it feels like to fear a knock on the front door.”
Before Mia could answer, Damon turned on his heel and walked out of the room, flanked by two federal marshals who escorted him down the corridor.
Evan pulled Mia closer to his chest, wrapping his arms around her as the first golden rays of sunrise cut through the hospital blinds.

“It’s over, Mia,” Evan whispered into her neck.
“The ghosts are finally gone.”
