Chapter 12 - The Reading of the Iron Ledger

Julian Vance gripped the edges of the marble lectern until the veins in his forearms bulged against his sleeves.

"This is an outrage!" Julian shouted, trying desperately to recapture the authority in the room.

"Mason, this meeting was convened under emergency protocols!"

"If you survived, you should have reported to your counsel, not stormed consecrated ground with armed escorts!"

Mason did not raise his voice.

He took two slow steps up the altar stairs, towering over Julian with terrifying physical presence.

"We checked our weapons at the door, Julian, as the sacred laws require."

"The only weapon I brought into this church is the truth."

Mason turned to face the leaders of the Five Families gathered below him.

"Don Carmine. Don Maroni. Don Lucchese. Don Caccini."

"You were invited here tonight to witness the coronation of a thief."

"You were told my mansion caught fire because of faulty electrical wiring."

"Let me introduce you to the woman who pulled Lily Moretti from that fire."

Mason extended his hand toward Mia, guiding her up to the second marble step.

Mia stood under the golden light of the crucifix, completely unbrained by the staring faces of forty mob bosses.

"Her name is Mia Carter," Mason proclaimed, his voice resonant and steady.

"Six months ago, her husband, Thomas Carter, was murdered at the South Brooklyn maritime terminal."

Julian sneered, a desperate sweat breaking across his hairline.

"What does a dead union mechanic have to do with the High Commission of New York?"

"He was a nobody! A grease monkey!"

"Silence, Julian!" Don Carmine roared from the front pew, slamming his silver cane against the floor.

"Let the boy speak."

Mia stepped up to the lectern, placing the Iron Ledger down on the cold stone with a heavy, hollow thud.

Beside it, Evelyn Reed opened the steel case, setting a ruggedized military laptop on the marble surface.

"Evelyn Reed was the chief financial accountant for Vance Logistics," Mia spoke clearly, her voice echoing into every shadowy corner of the cathedral.

"On this hard drive are the deleted surveillance records from Crane Fourteen on Pier Nine."

"Six months ago, Thomas Carter discovered that Julian Vance was moving forty million dollars of military-grade firearms through the commercial docks without the Commission’s knowledge."

Every head in the cathedral snapped toward Julian Vance.

Smuggling unregistered military arms within the five boroughs was an unforgivable violation of the Commission charter.

"That is a lie!" Julian shouted, his voice cracking with hysteria.

"She has no proof!"

"The proof is on this screen, Julian," Evelyn Reed said, turning the glowing monitor toward the pews.

The screen displayed crystal-clear time-stamped video from the night of the crane collapse.

A man in a navy maintenance jacket was clearly visible using a high-intensity cutting torch on the secondary safety cable.

The man turned toward the camera, revealing the scarred face of Julian Vance's personal chauffeur.

"Your man severed the cable, Julian," Mia said, her voice trembling with righteous fury.

"You dropped a forty-ton shipping container onto Thomas's van because he had morals."

"Because he refused to take a five-thousand-dollar bribe to look the other way."

"And after you killed him, you left me to drown in twenty-two thousand dollars of medical debt while you drank champagne in your penthouse."

The church was so silent that the ticking of the sanctuary clock sounded like hammer blows.

Don Carmine Falcone stepped up to the communion rail, his ancient eyes dark with deadly comprehension.

"Julian Vance," Carmine said, his voice dropping to a gravelly rasp.

"Did you traffic heavy ordnance through our shared terminals without Commission approval?"

Julian backed away, his hands fluttering in panic.

"Don Carmine, listen to me, that footage was manufactured by federal provocateurs!"

"Mason staged this whole drama to seize total control of the docks!"

"Then explain this, Julian," Eleanor Moretti called out from the bottom of the steps.

The matriarch pointed her trembling cane directly at the open Iron Ledger.

"Turn to page eighty-four, Mia," Eleanor commanded.

Mia flipped the yellowed, brittle pages of Don Bernardo's handwriting until she reached the purple wax seal.

"Read it aloud, child," Eleanor said softly.

Mia looked down at the precise, elegant script of Don Bernardo Moretti and read the ink into the silence:

"'July 14th, 1984. Marcus Vance accepted four hundred and fifty thousand dollars in cash from the Sicilian Commission to betray the transport coordinates of my second son.'"

"'Marcus Vance was spared execution on condition that his bloodline remain bound in permanent servitude to the Moretti throne.'"

"'Should the Vance name ever seek power, this page serves as their unconditional death warrant.'"

Mia looked up from the book, meeting Julian’s horrified eyes.

"Your father was a traitor, Julian."

"And you are a coward who hides behind matches and gasoline."

Don Carmine Falcone turned around to face the other four syndicate heads.

"Julian Vance," Don Carmine declared, his voice carrying the finality of an execution decree.

"By the unanimous laws of the Commission, you are stripped of your title, your assets, and your protection."

"You have twenty-four hours to leave this continent before every hunter on our payroll seeks your head."

Julian looked around the cathedral at the stony, disgusted faces of his former allies.

The Falcone sons were already moving toward the side exits to cut off his escape route.

The trap had snapped shut.

His grand coronation had turned into his public execution.

A horrific, twisted smile suddenly contorted Julian’s pale lips.

His eyes lost every shred of sanity, gleaming with the rabid madness of a cornered dog.

"Twenty-four hours, Carmine?" Julian whispered, his hand sliding smoothly beneath the back of his suit jacket.

May you like

"I don't need twenty-four hours."

"Because none of you are walking out of this church alive."
