Chapter 15 - The True Measure of Worth

Three days later, the discharge nurse wheeled me through the front sliding doors of Ridgefield General Hospital into the crisp afternoon air, where Julian Vance stood waiting beside a sleek black sedan holding the door open for me.

The sun was shining brightly overhead, reflecting off the polished chrome of the vehicle and casting warm light across the pavement where my life had nearly ended just a week prior.

As I slid comfortably into the leather passenger seat, I looked out the window one last time at the sprawling medical complex where nine unanswered calls had once felt like a death sentence.

Those nine calls had broken my heart, but they had also shattered the illusion that kept me bound to people who only loved my success, not my survival.

“Where to, Ms. Vance?” Julian asked politely, sliding into the driver’s seat and starting the engine with a quiet, smooth hum.

“Home, Julian,” I replied, looking straight ahead toward the future I had fought so hard to secure. “My real home.”

As the car pulled away from the curb and merged smoothly into the city traffic, I didn't look back once.

The past was sealed in ink, the accounts were balanced, and the empire was entirely my own.
