Chapter 7 - The Unraveling of Lies

The revelation about her father's corporate collapse hit the morning news cycle with the force of a tidal wave. Sloan sat in the sunlit breakfast nook overlooking the churning ocean, watching the financial networks flash images of Richard Hayes being led away from his downtown office by federal agents in federal windbreakers. Paige's face appeared next, surrounded by reporters asking about her marriage to Carter, who had already issued a public statement through his family's lawyers distancing himself entirely from the Hayes family scandal. They had dropped Richard and Paige like hot stones, proving once and for all that their entire world was built on fleeting alliances and manufactured loyalty. Mrs. Moretti quietly poured a fresh cup of artisan coffee into Sloan's china mug, offering a sympathetic smile that didn't feel pitying at all.
“He protected you, you know,” Mrs. Moretti said softly, breaking the quiet of the morning. Sloan looked up from the tablet screen.
“Who? Dante?”
“Mr. Valente knew about your father's illegal dealings six months ago,” the older woman explained, wiping down the marble counter. “He could have ruined Richard instantly. Instead, he waited until the wedding, ensuring that the debt collectors and the feds moved in only after you were safely inside these walls away from the fallout.” Sloan stared down at her coffee cup, a heavy wave of realization washing over her. Dante hadn't snatched her away out of cold malice or purely as a transactional trophy; he had pulled her out of the firing line before her father's inevitable collapse destroyed everything around her. The front doors echoed with heavy footsteps, and moments later, Dante strode into the kitchen, shedding his suit jacket over the back of a chair. He looked tired, the shadows beneath his gray eyes stark against his pale skin, but his posture remained rigid and alert.
“Did you see?” Sloan asked quietly, gesturing toward the screen.
“I orchestrated it,” Dante answered honestly, pulling out a chair opposite her and sitting down. “Your father tried to hide millions in offshore accounts tied to my shipping lanes. I simply handed the ledger to the district attorney.”

“You didn't have to tell me,” Sloan said, her voice dropping to a whisper.
“I don't keep secrets from you, Sloan,” Dante replied, his gaze unwavering. “You have every right to despise me for how I brought you here, but I will never lie to you about the world we live in.” Sloan felt the last of her defensive walls cracking under the crushing weight of his brutal honesty. For the first time in her life, someone was protecting her not because it looked good in a family photograph, but because she mattered to them alone.
