Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Rearview

The air inside the diner booth froze into solid glass.

The hum of the kitchen refrigerator seemed to amplify until it roared like an engine.

"What did you just say?" I asked, my voice deadly quiet.

"You heard me," she choked, wiping her face with her torn sleeve.

"My family?"

"The Moretti bloodline doesn't touch you," I said firmly, narrowing my eyes.

"My brother, my cousins, my uncles—they all knew you were off-limits even after the separation."

"My father made that decree before he died."

"If anyone within my bloodline laid a finger on your life, it would be an automatic death sentence."

"You really believe that fairy tale, don't you?" Madison sneered through her tears.

"You think your name protects people?"

"Your name is an execution list, Dominic!"

She grabbed the edge of the laminate table to steady herself.

"You want to know why my accounts disappeared?"

"Because four days after I signed the papers, an anonymous wire transferred fifty million dollars of untraced cartel funds into my personal Chase account."

"Within twelve hours, the Federal Bureau of Investigation seized every dime I owned."

"They froze my savings, my retirement, the trust fund, even my father’s medical foundation."

"The IRS confiscated the Highland Park house under the RICO statute."

"They claimed I was the laundering conduit for the Moretti family’s offshore distribution."

My stomach dropped into a bottomless pit.

"That's impossible," I breathed.

"My financial team cleans every route—"

"It wasn't your team!" she snapped.

"It was an inside leak designed to destroy me entirely without leaving your fingerprints on it!"

"When I went to hiring firms, they slammed doors in my face because I was listed as an unindicted co-conspirator."

"My car was repossessed."

"My apartment lease was canceled overnight under landlord moral clauses."

"Every time I found a small room to rent, the police raided the building within forty-eight hours on anonymous tips."

"They didn't want to kill me quickly, Dominic."

"They wanted me to rot on the sidewalk until I starved or stepped into traffic!"

"Why didn't you call me?" I shouted, grabbing her wrists across the table.

"Why didn't you come to my office? Why didn't you scream for help?"

"Because the person who engineered it met me in the parking garage the night my accounts were seized," she whispered.

Her pupils dilated in pure, unfiltered horror.

"He held a phone to my ear."

"On the other end was a live feed of your penthouse apartment."

"He had a sniper rifle scoped directly into your bedroom window while you slept."

My breath hitched in my chest.

"He looked me in the eye and said, 'If you ever contact Dominic, if you ever accept a penny from his associates, if you ever speak his name to an authority, the bullet goes through his skull while he sleeps.'"

"He smiled at me, Dominic."

"He told me that my silence was the only thing keeping the heart beating inside your chest."

A cold, suffocating rage ignited in the core of my marrow.

"Who was he?" I demanded, my fingernails digging into my own palms until skin broke.

"Give me the name, Madison!"

She shook her head frantically.

"No."

"Give me the damn name!"

"If I tell you, you'll act without thinking, and they will kill you before you make it back to your office!"

She glanced frantically toward the window again.

Her breath hitched in a strangled gasp.

I followed her line of sight through the cracked plastic blinds.

Across the four-lane boulevard, idling in the shadow of a closed warehouse, was an unmarked black sedan.

A dark Dodge Charger with heavily tinted windows and no front license plate.

Its exhaust pipe blew a steady, rhythmic plume of gray smoke into the blistering afternoon air.

The driver sat motionless behind the dark film of glass, perfectly positioned to observe every inch of the diner entrance.

"They found me," Madison whimpered, her hands clutching her plastic trash bag like a child holding a shield.

"They saw me talking to you."

"They're going to pull the trigger."

"Nobody is pulling a trigger," I said, standing up with violent purpose.

The heavy wooden booth groaned under my weight.

"Frank is right outside in the Escalade with two men and submachine guns."

"We are walking out of here, you are getting in my car, and you will never sleep in a shelter again."

"You don't get it!" she cried, stumbling back from the booth.

"The sedan isn't here to kill me!"

"It's here to confirm that I broke the agreement!"

"Madison, stay behind me!" I commanded, reaching under my suit jacket to loosen the Glock 19 resting against my ribs.

She backed toward the diner's rear kitchen door with terrifying agility.

"I gave up my life, my money, my home, and my dignity to keep you alive for four years, Dominic," she sobbed, tears splashing onto her torn collar.

"I couldn't save our marriage."

"I couldn't live in your violent world."

"But I refused to let them bury you."

"Madison, don't move!"

"Don't look for me, Dominic," she whispered.

"Look at the people sitting at your Sunday dinner table."

She turned, threw open the swinging kitchen door, and vanished through the cooks' prep line into the rear alleyway.
