Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Foundation

The evening air carried the crisp, refreshing scent of autumn as Mara locked the front glass door of her studio for the night.

She walked down the cobblestone sidewalk of the historic district, her footsteps falling with a steady, confident rhythm against the pavement.

Passing by a high-end financial news kiosk on the corner, she glanced briefly at the digital headlines scrolling across the LED screen.

MERCER FINANCIAL HOLDINGS ANNOUNCES RESTRUCTURING FOLLOWING MAJOR PATENT RECALL; LEAD EXECUTIVES DEPART FOR UNCLOSED DESTINATIONS.

She didn't stop to read the details.

She didn't feel a surge of anger, or pity, or lingering bitterness.

She felt only a profound, liberating peace.

Her phone vibrated in her pocket.

She pulled it out to see a text message from her father: Dinner at your place tonight? I’m bringing the blueprints for your back patio remodel.

Mara smiled, her thumb flying across the screen as she replied: Only if you let me design the kitchen layout this time.

She slipped the phone back into her coat, looking up at the clear night sky where the stars shone bright and steady above the city skyline.

The wedding night beneath the bridal bed felt like something that had happened to another person in another lifetime.

She was Mara Bennett.

She was a creator, a designer, a daughter, and a survivor of shallow illusions.

And as she turned the corner toward home, she knew with absolute certainty that no one would ever trick her into signing away her own life again.
