Chapter 15 - The First Day of the Rest of My Life

The transition of power at Vance Industries was swift, orderly, and absolute.

With the backing of federal oversight and Aunt Catherine acting as executive vice-chairperson, I spent my first official month as chairperson dismantling the corrupt internal syndicates that Richard had cultivated for decades.

We audited every subsidiary, severed ties with compromised political figures, and redirected billions of dollars into philanthropic initiatives focused on family protection, legal aid, and maternal healthcare support.

On a crisp Saturday morning in late September, exactly one month after my mother’s passing, I drove out to a quiet, sunlit hillside cemetery on the outskirts of the city—a real, peaceful resting place this time, far away from secret vaults and weeping willow traps.

I carried a bouquet of white lilies—my mother’s favorite flowers—and placed them gently against the polished granite headstone.

Her real headstone.

EVELYN MORGAN.

A Mother’s Love Saved My Life.

I stood there for a long time in the quiet morning breeze, my fingers tracing the carved letters of her name.

The lies were gone.

The danger had passed.

And for the first time in thirty years, I finally knew exactly who I was, where I came from, and where I was going.

I smiled through my tears, whispering softly into the wind.

"Thank you, Mom. You can rest now."

I turned away from the grave, walking back toward the waiting car where a bright, unclouded horizon stretched out endlessly before me.

The price of my life had been paid in blood and secrecy long before I was born.

But the future?

That belonged entirely to me.
