Chapter 3 - The Brother in the Shadows

Morning arrived with the scent of freshly brewed coffee and wild bacon sizzling on the stovetop.

I woke up startled, momentary confusion giving way to the harsh memory of yesterday's nightmare.

My legs were so stiff I could barely stand, but Grace was already at the kitchen table, reading glasses resting on the tip of her nose.

The scrap of paper lay right next to her mug.

"Morning, Noah," she said with a comforting smile.

"Wash your face and eat some toast.

I’m dialing this number again right now."

I sat on the edge of the wooden chair, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.

Grace punched the buttons with steady determination.

The phone rang once.

Twice.

On the sixth ring, just when I was ready to give up hope, the line picked up with a sharp click.

"Speak," a deep, rough, gravelly voice commanded from the receiver.

The man sounded completely exhausted, yet his tone held an edge of razor-sharp alertness.

Grace cleared her throat, straightening her spine.

"Hello, sir.

My name is Grace Miller, a schoolteacher residing in Willow Creek.

I have a ten-year-old boy sitting at my kitchen table who needs immediate assistance.

His name is Noah Vance."

A deafening silence fell over the other end of the line.

For nearly ten seconds, neither party uttered a single sound; all I could hear was the faint, rhythmic breathing of a man stunned into speechlessness.

"Noah?" the deep voice finally asked, its roughness cracking slightly with disbelief.

"Michael's boy?

He’s alive?"

Grace looked up at me, her eyes widening in surprise, before pressing the speakerphone button so I could hear.

"Yes, he is alive and sitting right next to me," Grace replied firmly.

"His stepmother Vanessa dumped him on an abandoned caliche road five miles outside of town yesterday afternoon, right after Michael Vance was buried."

A heavy, furious breath rattled through the speaker, sounding like thunder rolling across the plains.

"Did that viper claim that the entire estate belongs exclusively to her?" the man demanded, his voice dropping into a lethal, low growl.

I leaned closer to the phone, my voice trembling but clear.

"Yes, sir.

She said the Dallas house, the firm, and every single dollar were hers, and that she wasn't going to raise another woman's child."

Another profound silence hung in the air.

"Then she pulled off exactly what my brother was terrified she would do," the man said, his voice laced with venom and sorrow.

I froze, my mind struggling to process the word.

"Brother?

My dad had a brother?"

"Yes, Noah.

I am Daniel Vance.

Your father was my younger brother.

And you have been in grave danger for a very long time."

The revelation shattered everything I thought I understood about my family.

Dad had always told me he was an only child, that our family consisted of just him and me after Mom passed away.

"Why didn't my dad ever tell me about you?" I asked, a wave of confusion washing over me.

"Because Vanessa and her associates made sure I remained a ghost," Daniel explained coldly.

"Eight years ago, before you can remember, Michael and I co-owned Vance Logistics and Commercial Properties.

When Vanessa entered the picture, she meticulously drove a wedge between us.

She manufactured financial discrepancies, forged documents, and framed me for corporate embezzlement until Michael bought me out and severed all contact to protect the family name.

I left Texas, moved to a ranch up in Montana, and disappeared from his life.

I thought Michael hated me."

"Then why did he give me your number before he died?" I asked, my voice cracking.

"Because three weeks ago, Michael called me from an untraceable prepaid phone," Daniel said, his voice growing intensely grave.

"He called me from the ICU waiting room before they sedated him.

He told me he had discovered something horrifying in Vanessa’s private safe.

He realized he hadn't contracted a natural illness.

He realized he was being poisoned, slowly, through his daily medications.

He told me, 'Daniel, if I don't survive this hospital stay, Vanessa will eliminate Noah next to consolidate the legal title to the trusts.

You are the only person tough enough to stop her.'"

Chills rippled down my entire body as Grace gasped in absolute horror, dropping her pen on the table.

"Michael changed his will in secret," Daniel continued.

"He didn't trust the Dallas attorneys because Vanessa had them on retainer.

He executed an emergency codicil with an independent legal firm in Austin, naming me as your sole legal guardian and the primary executor of the family estate if he met an untimely death.

Vanessa thinks she won by intimidation.

She thinks abandoning you in the middle of nowhere gives her an uncontested legal claim to declare you abandoned or missing."

Daniel paused, his voice turning commanding and fierce.

"Miss Grace, keep your front door locked and stay away from the windows.

I landed at the Austin airport two hours ago to search for Michael's trail.

I am renting a vehicle right now.

I will be at your front door in precisely ninety minutes.

May you like

Do not tell a single soul that Noah is with you."

The call disconnected with a sharp click, leaving the kitchen thick with dread and the sudden promise of a brewing war.
