Chapter 7 - A New Dawn

Six months later, the Chicago sun broke through the clouds, casting a warm, golden glow over the harbor.

The trial of the century had officially concluded.

Victoria Vance had been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of Charles Vance, the conspiracy to murder Graham Crestwood, and the attempted murder of myself. Her precious pearls had been replaced by a rough, orange jumpsuit, and she would spend the rest of her days in a maximum-security cell, stripped of her name, her wealth, and her pride.

Dominic Vance had received a twenty-five-year sentence for grand larceny, corporate fraud, and his role in the cover-up of my fall. He would spend his youth behind bars, a broken, penniless man who had lost everything to his own arrogance.

Paige Mercer, having cooperated fully with the prosecution, received a lightened sentence of five years, her reputation utterly ruined and her stolen assets completely liquidated.

Vance Development had been completely rebranded as Crestwood Legacy Group. Under the brilliant leadership of Martin Hale and Sophia—whose name had been completely cleared of any knowing wrongdoing—the company was now dedicated to funding sustainable public infrastructure and building shelters for victims of domestic abuse.

I stood on the deck of my new home, a quiet, beautiful estate overlooking Lake Michigan. The dented Honda was gone, replaced by a simple, elegant SUV, but I still wore my thrifted wool coats. I didn't need expensive clothes or flashing cameras to know who I was.

Emma walked out onto the deck, carrying two mugs of steaming coffee. She handed one to me, her face bright with a peaceful smile. “How are you feeling today?”

I took a sip of the warm coffee, looking out at the endless blue horizon. For the first time in three years, the heavy, suffocating pain in my chest was completely gone. The stitches above my eye had faded into a tiny, almost invisible silver line—a quiet badge of honor.

“I’m happy, Emma,” I said, and for the first time, I meant it with my entire soul. “I’m finally free.”

I looked down at the gold signet ring on my finger, then at the quiet, peaceful water below. The Vances had tried to put me in my place.

But they had forgotten one simple truth:

My place was at the top.
