Chapter 8 - THE RENTAL CAR REALITY: HOW A LUXURY VACATION ENDED IN A TRASH-FILLED SEDAN

Forty-five minutes later, the grand, sunlit driveway of the Miami resort bore witness to a scene of absolute, cinematic humiliation.

The luxury Mercedes-Benz SUV that Julian had rented for the week under Genevieve’s corporate travel account had been repossessed by the rental agency at 11:45 AM after the master authorization code was abruptly voided.

Instead, parked awkwardly along the red curb was a dented, economy-class Nissan Versa—a dusty rental car that Harrison had frantically booked using the absolute last remaining scrap of his personal debit card balance, an account that was now sitting at a precarious $42.50.

The four Vances stood on the sidewalk beside the open trunk of the Nissan, shoving their designer luggage, silk robes, and half-packed garment bags into the cramped cargo space with furious, uncoordinated movements.

Passersby walking along the palm-lined boulevard glanced over at them, whispering and pointing at the disheveled family shouting obscenities in front of a budget sedan.

“Watch the Gucci bag, you idiot!” Victoria screamed at Julian as he shoved her oversized luggage compartment on top of a plastic laundry basket. “You’ve already scratched the leather!”

“Shut up, Victoria!” Julian roared back, slamming the trunk lid shut so hard the metal frame rattled. “If you don't like how I’m packing your bags, you can carry them on the bus back to Atlanta!”

Eleanor stood near the passenger door, her sunglasses hiding her swollen eyes, her arms crossed tightly over her silk bathrobe—which she had forgotten to change out of in the frantic panic of the eviction.

“This is all Genevieve’s fault,” Eleanor muttered through clenched teeth, her voice shaking with venomous hatred. “She planned this. She orchestrated this entire humiliation to punish us.”

“Well, congratulations, Mom,” Julian snarled, yanking the driver’s side door open and sliding into the sweltering heat of the un-air-conditioned Nissan. “Your brilliant plan to humiliate her downstairs in the lobby while we ate seafood went off without a hitch. Hope the lobster was worth total financial annihilation.”

He turned the key in the ignition.

The engine sputtered, coughed, and roared to life with a loud, rattling exhaust pipe that sounded like a lawnmower with a cracked muffler.

Harrison climbed heavily into the front passenger seat, wiping sweat from his forehead with a crumpled handkerchief. “Just drive, Julian. Get us away from this resort before the police decide to arrest us for vagrancy.”

Julian threw the car into reverse, clipped the curb of the hotel driveway with a loud scrunch, and sped away down Collins Avenue, leaving the sparkling ocean, the luxury penthouses, and their shattered illusions of elite nobility far behind them in the rearview mirror.
