Chapter 3 - The DeLuca Syndicate’s Black Vault

Lucas’s expression turned carved from stone.

The atmosphere in the vestibule grew so tense the air felt hard to inhale.

Emily looked between the two men, realizing the depth of the trap she had walked into.

“My father died raiding your family’s property?” Emily demanded, staring at Lucas.

Lucas did not look away from Daniel.

“I was twenty-three years old twelve years ago,” Lucas said flatly.

“That isn’t an answer!” Emily shouted.

“I didn’t run the docks back then,” Lucas replied, his jaw tight.

“My father ran the organization.”

“I didn’t know about the raid until the sirens were screaming across the bay.”

Daniel let out a low, humorless chuckle.

“You didn’t know,” Daniel said.

“But your old man certainly did.”

Lucas stepped forward, his knuckles whitening as his hands balled into fists.

“Are you claiming Carmine DeLuca ordered the hit on two detectives?”

“I didn’t say Carmine ordered it,” Daniel corrected.

“Then what are you saying?” Lucas growled.

Daniel leaned against the marble counter, his weathered face showing every year of his exile.

“The warehouse wasn’t holding contraband narcotics.”

“It wasn’t holding unregistered firearms, either.”

Lucas stared at him in disbelief.

“Pier 42 was our primary distribution hub.”

“What else would be inside?”

Daniel paused, letting the silence build before delivering the blow.

“Police evidence.”

Emily felt a chill crawl down her spine.

“Why would Metro evidence be locked inside a mafia warehouse?” she asked.

“Because senior officers were selling it,” Daniel answered.

“Confiscated heroin, seized cartel money, untraceable murder weapons.”

“They used Carmine’s docks to wash it, repackage it, and push it back onto the streets.”

Lucas didn’t flinch, but the slight twitch in his jaw showed the strike had landed.

“My father had dirty cops on the payroll,” Lucas admitted slowly.

“That’s hardly breaking news in this city.”

Daniel shook his head.

“This wasn’t just a few precinct captains taking cash in brown envelopes.”

“It was a systematic shadow department.”

Emily’s chest tightened as memories of her childhood resurfaced.

She remembered her father working late into the night, papers spread across the kitchen table.

She remembered him locking his battered leather briefcase into the hall safe every evening.

“What did my father find in that warehouse?” Emily asked quietly.

Daniel’s gaze softened as he looked at her.

“A list.”

“What kind of list?”

“A hard-bound internal ledger,” Daniel explained.

“Every corrupt detective, every paid judge, every district attorney taking DeLuca kickbacks.”

“Dates, bank routing numbers, drop points, and case file numbers.”

Emily closed her eyes, the horrifying logic finally clicking together.

“He was going to blow the entire city wide open,” she whispered.

“Yes,” Daniel said.

“So the department decided to burn the warehouse with both of you inside it.”

Daniel didn’t answer.

He didn't have to.

His silence was an absolute, terrifying confirmation.

“If you knew the raid was a trap,” Emily said, her voice cracking, “why did you walk in?”

“Because Michael refused to let the ledger disappear,” Daniel said softly.

“He told me that if we didn't pull that book that night, they would destroy it forever.”

“And you got it?” Lucas asked, his tone razor sharp.

“We got it,” Daniel confirmed.

Lucas stepped closer, towering over the older officer.

“Where is it?”

Daniel met Lucas’s dark eyes without flinching.

“Lost in the fire.”

Lucas’s lips curled into a cold, derisive smirk.

“Don’t insult my intelligence, Daniel.”

Daniel didn't blink.

“I told you, it burned.”

“Bullshit,” Lucas snapped, his voice ringing through the room.

“A man doesn’t spend twelve years hiding behind a dead captain’s badge for a book that burned to ash.”

“You stayed alive because you had leverage.”

Emily watched Daniel’s eyes.

Lucas was right.

Daniel’s breathing remained shallow, but the pulse in his neck was thumping erratically.

“Where is the list, Daniel?” Emily pleaded, tears blurring her vision.

“I swear to God, I don’t have it,” Daniel said, his voice raw.

Emily grabbed the lapel of his wet trench coat.

“Then who has it?”

Daniel looked away, staring toward the dark corridor of the mansion.

Emily felt the truth settle over her like a suffocating shroud.

“My father,” she whispered.

Daniel did not deny it.

He simply lowered his head.

“He’s alive,” Emily breathed, the reality hitting her like a freight train.

“I didn't say that,” Daniel murmured.

“You didn’t have to!” she cried, shaking his coat.

Lucas stepped in, pulling Emily gently back by her shoulder before turning on Daniel.

“If Michael Hart walked out of that inferno with the ledger, why did he vanish?” Lucas asked.

“Why abandon his family for twelve years?”

Daniel swallowed hard, his throat clicking in the silence.

“Because the ledger contained one name Michael never expected to see.”

Emily froze, dread pooling in her stomach.

“Whose name?”

May you like

Daniel looked directly at her, his eyes filled with profound pity.

“Your mother’s.”
