Chapter 9 - The Confrontation of Mirrors

The concussive force of the door breach knocked the two Blackridge guards off their feet, sending them crashing into the stainless-steel examination tables.
Director Vance Holloway stumbled backward, dropping the lethal syringe as the pressurized shockwave shattered the overhead halogen lighting.
Ethan Ward burst into the room, his shotgun roaring in the confined space as he eliminated the first guard who reached for an automatic sidearm.
The second guard lunged forward with a combat blade, but Walter Hayes appeared behind Ethan, firing a controlled burst that ended the threat instantly.
Holloway scrambled toward the emergency panic button on the rear wall, his manicured hands frantically punching the glass casing.
Vincent Romano stepped through the smoke, raised his Kimber .45, and put a single round through the control panel, destroying the electronics in a shower of sparks.
"Step away from the wall, Holloway," Vincent said, his voice dropping into a deadly, cavernous growl.
"Before I let these soldiers dismantle you piece by piece."
Holloway raised his trembling hands, backing slowly into the corner, his pristine bespoke suit covered in white drywall dust.
Ethan lowered his weapon and immediately dropped to his knees beside the steel interrogation chair where Clara sat frozen in shock.
He pulled a combat knife from his chest rig and sliced through the thick polymer zip-ties binding her wrists and ankles.
"You're safe, Clara," Ethan breathed, his voice cracking with intense, overwhelming emotion.
"We’re getting you out of here."
Clara pulled her bruised hands free, rubbing her raw wrists as she looked up into the face of the man who had just saved her life.
Her eyes locked onto the crescent scar above his right eyebrow, the identical jawline, and the dark, sorrowful eyes she had studied in dozens of old photographs.
Her breath hitched in her throat, a wave of profound, suffocating recognition crashing over her mind like an avalanche.
"You," Clara whispered, her voice trembling violently as she recoiled against the steel backrest of the chair.
"You're Daniel Mercer."
"You're the man who abandoned me in an Ohio orphanage when I was nine years old."
"You're the man who stole forty-five million dollars and let his own daughter believe he was dead for seventeen years!"
Ethan stopped moving, kneeling on the hard, cold tile, his head bowed under the agonizing weight of her accusations.
"Clara, look at me," Walter Hayes pleaded, stepping forward into the light and pulling down his tactical balaclava.
"Look at my face, child."
Clara turned her tear-streaked face toward Walter, her brow furrowing with confusion.
"I don't know you," she stammered, her voice breaking under the suffocating emotional pressure.
"I was your father's squad leader," Walter said softly, tears welling in the corners of his weathered eyes.
"I served alongside Daniel Mercer every single day in the Arghandab valley."
"I was there when he wrote the letters to you that were supposed to be delivered on your eighteenth birthday."
"And I can swear to you on the graves of every fallen brother in our regiment that the man kneeling in front of you is not your father."
Clara looked between Walter and Ethan, the reality of the situation fracturing her understanding of the last four years of her life.
"Then who is he?" Clara cried out, her voice echoing off the concrete walls.
"Why does he have my father's military tags?"
"Why does he have my father’s name on his security credentials?"
Ethan looked up slowly, his face etched with an unbearable, profound sorrow that no actor could ever fabricate.
"My name is Ethan Ward, Clara," he whispered, his voice trembling like a child's.
"I was your father's machine gunner."
"Daniel was the bravest, most honorable man in our entire company."
"When our convoy was betrayed by our own commanding officer, Daniel died trying to pull two wounded private soldiers out of a burning fuel truck."
"He didn't abandon you."
"He fought like a lion until his final breath to make sure his men had a chance to survive."
"And when I woke up from that explosion, broken and bleeding in the sand, Blackridge contractors gave me a choice."
"They told me they would murder every person connected to our squad unless I took Daniel's identity and disappeared into the shadows."
"I took his name to survive."
"I took his name to hunt down the men who murdered him."
"I never knew about you, Clara."
"If I had known that taking Daniel’s name would freeze your survivor trust and leave you alone in the world, I would have thrown myself into that burning ditch seventeen years ago."
Tears streamed uncontrollably down Clara’s face as the monolithic wall of anger and hatred she had built for seventeen years began to crumble.
Before she could speak, Director Vance Holloway lunged sideways toward an auxiliary breaker box on the wall and yanked down a red emergency lever.
"Facility purge sequence initiated!" Holloway screamed with psychotic glee.
"The seawall pumps are reversing!"
"Five million gallons of freezing lake water will flood this sublevel within four minutes!"
A massive hydraulic siren began blaring with ear-splitting intensity, and yellow emergency beacons flashed throughout the complex.
At the same moment, the heavy blast doors at the end of the corridor slammed shut with a concussive boom, sealing the primary egress route.
Across the observation glass, the emergency security grates opened, and three remaining elite Blackridge contractors opened fire with automatic submachine guns.
A heavy round tore through the observation window, sending razor-sharp glass spraying across the room.
Ethan didn't think; his body reacted on pure, instinctual protective reflex.
He threw himself completely across Clara’s body, wrapping his arms around her head and torso, using his own armored back as a human shield.
Two high-velocity armor-piercing rounds slammed into the ceramic plate over Ethan’s shoulder blade, shattering the ballistic insert and driving deep into his flesh.
Ethan grunted in agonizing pain, blood coughing from his lips onto Clara’s shoulder, but he refused to shift his weight even an inch.
"Ethan!" Walter roared, spinning with his carbine and firing a continuous, devastating magazine through the shattered glass into the shooters.
Vincent Romano lunged across the room, grabbed Holloway by the throat with one hand, and slammed him against the steel examination table.

"Open the emergency seawall bypass!" Vincent roared, pressing the hot muzzle of his .45 against Holloway’s eye socket.
"Open it right now, or I swear to God you will drown on your own blood before the lake water even touches your shoes!"
