Chapter 5 - The Ohio Thread

The heavy steel reinforced door to the basement processing room swung open with a dull, hydraulic hiss.
The scent of damp lime, cold iron, and old copper grease filled the corridor.
Lucas was standing under a single hanging incandescent bulb, wiping grease from his knuckles with an industrial cotton towel.
In the center of the concrete floor, David Vance was tied securely to a rusted steel chair bolted to the foundation.
His right leg hung at a grotesque, unnatural angle, swollen to twice its normal size beneath his torn jeans.
His face was an unrecognizable mask of purple hematomas and dried fluid.
He was shaking violently, his breath whistling through a broken septum.
Andrew walked down the four concrete steps, his polished shoes clicking sharply against the floor.
He had changed into a clean black cashmere sweater and a heavy charcoal overcoat.
He looked like an executive inspecting an asset rather than a killer visiting a slaughterhouse.
"Did he give up the handlers?" Andrew asked, not even glancing down at the trembling man in the chair.
"Frank Romano’s second son, Leo," Lucas replied, tossing the stained rag into a steel drum.
"Leo runs the sports betting parlor out of the social club on Mulberry Street. He gave David the assignment forty-eight hours ago."
"What did they promise him?"
"Eighty grand in debt forgiveness, plus ten thousand in cash once the shipping manifests were confirmed by their digital specialist."
Andrew stopped two paces in front of the chair.
David lifted his swollen face with immense difficulty, squinting through blood-caked eyelashes at the silhouette looming over him.
"Carter... please, man," David croaked, his voice cracking into a pathetic whine.
"I didn't know she was yours. I swear to God, I didn't know she was your girl! Leo told me she was just a secretary!"
Andrew stepped forward and rested the heavy sole of his shoe directly on top of David's broken right knee.
He did not push down.
He simply let the natural weight of his leg rest upon the shattered bone fragments.
David’s eyes bulged from his skull, and a high-pitched, strangled shriek tore through his raw throat.
"She is not my girl," Andrew said with frightening calm.
"She is Cindy Stone. She is an honorable woman who worked three jobs to keep her family alive while you spent your earnings on dice games and bad whiskey."
Andrew pressed down half an inch.
David's screams turned into a breathless, bubbling gag as his body convulsed against the heavy hemp ropes.
"The sister," Andrew commanded, removing his foot.
"Tell me what Leo Romano planned for the sister in Ohio."
David slumped forward, vomiting bile onto the concrete floor between his boots.
"Two guys," David gasped between ragged sobs, his chest heaving.
"Two guys from Queens. They left... they left on the midnight Greyhound bus from Port Authority."
Lucas immediately checked his wristwatch.
"The midnight bus to Columbus left two hours ago," Lucas said, his tone sharpening with urgency.
"It arrives at the Columbus terminal at eight-thirty in the morning."
"Why the sister?" Andrew asked, his eyes narrowing into cold slits.
"Collateral," David sobbed, snot and tears dripping from his chin onto his chest.
"Leo said Cindy might have corporate passcodes that change every twenty-four hours. They wanted Maya as leverage to make Cindy log into your offshore banking accounts from inside your own office."
The full scope of the conspiracy snapped into terrifying focus.
This was not an opportunistic snatch-and-grab by a rogue street gang.
Frank Romano was orchestrating a coordinated, hostile takeover of Carter Logistics' primary liquidity reserves.
They had identified Cindy as the single point of failure in Andrew’s defensive perimeter.
They had assumed she was a weak, terrified civilian who would fold the moment her family was threatened.
They did not understand that by targeting Cindy Stone, they had unlocked a level of savagery Andrew had kept buried since the war of 2018.
Andrew turned his back on the chair and walked toward the exit stairs.
"Lucas."
"Boss?"
"Call our private airstrip at Teterboro," Andrew commanded as he climbed the first step.
"Prep the Gulfstream. Put six men from the waterfront security detail on board with full tactical clearance."
"Who is leading the team to Ohio?" Lucas asked.
"You are," Andrew replied, pausing on the landing.
"I want you on the ground in Columbus before that bus crosses the state line. Find Maya Stone. Secure her. If those two men from Queens set foot on her street, put them in a ditch where the snow won't melt until spring."
"And what about you?" Lucas asked, his hand already dialing the operations number on his secure device.
Andrew looked back over his shoulder, his eyes pitch-black in the dim basement light.
"I am going to Mulberry Street," Andrew said.
May you like
"I am going to have breakfast with Leo Romano, and I am going to show his father what happens when you touch the things that belong to my house."
Behind him, David Vance let out another pathetic sob, begging for an ambulance that would never arrive.
