Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Ward

By two o'clock in the morning, the hospital corridors had descended into an uneasy, flickering quiet.

Rain lashed violently against the reinforced windows of Room 408, running down the glass like liquid silver.

Inside the room, Marco Vance stood sentinel beside the reinforced heavy oak doorway.

Marco was thirty-two years old, a former military intelligence operative who had served Damian's family with blind loyalty for a decade.

He wore an unbranded tactical windbreaker over a concealed sidearm, his eyes scanning the corridor through the door's glass peephole.

On the bedside table, Marco's portable military-grade laptop hummed softly, connected to an auxiliary satellite uplink.

"The manifests Daniel mentioned are completely real, boss," Marco reported in a hushed, disciplined tone.

"I bypassed the internal firewalls on our secondary holding company in Rotterdam ten minutes ago."

"Daniel Bennett discovered that twelve container vessels registered under our corporate flag were carrying phantom cargo."

"They were moving hundred-million-dollar government bond shipments under the guise of industrial machine parts."

Damian stood over Marco's shoulder, his eyes scanning the cascading lines of encrypted green financial code.

"Who authorized the secondary shipping manifests, Marco?" Damian demanded in a low, dangerous growl.

"The digital signature was encrypted using a triple-layer military cipher," Marco answered, typing rapidly.

"Daniel managed to lock down the master decryption key before he died."

"He tied the digital key directly to a private Swiss family trust registered under his unborn son's genetic profile."

Damian turned his head toward the acrylic bassinet where baby Daniel was sleeping peacefully.

The horrifying puzzle was finally complete.

Daniel Bennett knew he was marked for death eight months ago by someone powerful inside the Russo syndicate.

Knowing he could not save his own life, Daniel had transferred the master encryption key to his unborn child.

The only way anyone could unlock those hundreds of millions of dollars was by presenting the child's certified biological DNA to the Swiss trust.

Victor Sloan did not want to support Claire Bennett out of corporate charity.

Victor Sloan needed the newborn baby's umbilical blood sample and signed parental guardianship forms.

Once Victor controlled the child's legal identity, he controlled the entire offshore fortune.

And once Victor possessed that fortune, Claire and her newborn son would become entirely expendable.

Suddenly, a muffled disturbance echoed from the corridor outside Room 408.

Margaret Hale's sharp, furious voice sliced through the heavy quiet of the maternity ward.

"Take your hands off that nursery cart right now, young man, before I drive these trauma shears through your wrist."

Damian gave Marco a sharp hand signal, and both men drew their suppressed weapons in a synchronized motion.

Damian jerked the door open, stepping out into the dim hallway with his weapon lowered against his leg.

At the end of the short corridor stood Margaret Hale, blocking a metal hospital nursery cart with her entire body.

Facing her was a tall male orderly wearing standard blue hospital scrubs and a surgical mask pulled over his nose.

The orderly held a sterile collection kit containing four glass vacuum tubes designed for newborn blood extraction.

"Mister Sloan's private physician ordered an immediate metabolic screening for the Bennett infant," the orderly insisted, his voice tense.

"Step aside, nurse, I am simply following clinical protocol."

Margaret did not budge an inch, her silver hair bristling with combative fury.

"There is no metabolic screening scheduled for this infant until seven o'clock tomorrow morning," Margaret barked.

"And hospital protocol requires parental written consent before any infant blood sample leaves this secure wing."

"Show me your hospital identification badge, right now."

The orderly reached toward his chest pocket as if reaching for a badge, but Damian recognized the subtle shift in weight immediately.

The man was reaching for a concealed weapon hidden beneath his blue scrubs.

Before the fake orderly could clear the fabric of his shirt, Damian crossed the corridor like a striking predator.

Damian slammed the man face-first into the concrete wall of the service alcove with bone-rattling force.

Marco appeared instantly behind him, snatching a suppressed polymer pistol from the orderly's waistband before it could hit the floor.

The fake orderly groaned in agony as Damian drove a steel elbow directly into the man's lower ribs.

"Who provided you with this hospital uniform?" Damian whispered against the man's bleeding ear.

The man choked on his own saliva, his eyes rolling back in terror as he looked into Damian Russo's stone-cold eyes.

"Mister Sloan... he paid five thousand cash..." the man wheezed in desperate surrender.

"I was only supposed to take the umbilical blood vials from the nursery intake fridge and bring them to his car."

"I was not going to hurt the baby... I swear on my mother's grave, I was only hired for the blood."

Damian did not blink.

"Where is Victor waiting right now?"

"In the underground loading dock behind the pathology wing," the orderly sobbed.

"He has three private security contractors with him in a black transport van."

"They are waiting for the electrical grid to shut down again so they can cut the hospital cameras."

Damian looked over at Margaret Hale, who was standing beside the metal cart without showing a shred of fear.

She simply adjusted her cardigan and looked down at the captured mercenary with utter disgust.

"Good work, Mister Russo," Margaret said calmly, picking up the discarded glass blood tubes and throwing them into the biohazard bin.

"It turns out you are marginally useful for more than just holding flashlights."

Damian looked at the veteran nurse with profound, unspoken respect.

"Margaret, get back inside Room 408 and lock the steel bolt from the inside."

"Marco will remain by the door with Claire."

"If anyone attempts to turn that brass doorknob without my three-tap code, Marco has standing orders to shoot through the wood."

Margaret nodded once, her jaw set with maternal defiance.

"Do not worry about Claire or that boy, Damian."

"Anyone trying to get through that door will have to walk over my cold corpse first."

Damian turned to Marco, handing him the captured suppressed pistol.

"Keep the satellite link open and prepare an extraction route through the service basement."

"I am going down to the loading dock to settle Daniel Bennett's ledger once and for all."
