Chapter 4 - THE NURSERY SANCTUARY: GRATITUDE, HEALING, AND A NEW UNDERSTANDING

Upstairs in the bright, pastel-colored nursery, the atmosphere was warm, safe, and filled with the gentle hum of a white-noise machine.

Tessa sat in the comfortable rocking chair in the corner, holding twelve-month-old Noah softly against her shoulder while he gnawed peacefully on a teething ring, having completely recovered from his earlier fright.

The nursery door was unlocked, and when Grant gently tapped on the wood and pushed it open, Tessa looked up quickly, her eyes reflecting a lingering nervousness.

“Mr. Sterling... is she... is she gone?” Tessa asked in a quiet whisper, adjusting her grip on the baby.

“She’s gone, Tessa,” Grant reassured her softly, walking into the nursery and pulling up a wooden chair to sit directly across from her. “She’s off the property, her access codes have been permanently wiped from the smart-home system, and she will never step foot inside this house again. You and Noah are entirely safe.”

Tessa let out a long, trembling breath, her shoulders finally dropping from their defensive hunch. “Thank goodness. I was... I was so worried about Noah. She just snapped, Mr. Sterling. One second she was on the phone, and the next she was shoving him like he was a piece of garbage.”

Grant leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, looking into Tessa’s dark, expressive eyes with a depth of gratitude that words could barely capture.

“Tessa... what you did today... putting yourself between a flying ceramic vase and my son... you risked your own physical safety to protect a baby who isn't even your own flesh and blood,” Grant said, his voice thick with emotion. “I cannot thank you enough. You saved him from serious injury. You saved my family.”

A faint, modest blush crept up Tessa’s cheeks, and she looked down at Noah, who was now blinking sleepily against her shoulder.

“I couldn't just stand there and watch her hurt him, sir,” Tessa said simply, her voice unwavering. “No child deserves to be treated like that. It’s my job to care for him, but more than that... I love this little guy. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.”

Grant felt a strange, unfamiliar warmth stir deep within his chest—a feeling he hadn't experienced in years of dating high-society socialites like Vivienne who viewed childcare as an inconvenient background chore.

Tessa wasn't just a nanny. She was a woman of immense integrity, courage, and genuine heart.

“Your job description just got an update, Tessa,” Grant smiled softly. “Effective immediately, your salary is doubled. And any medical expenses, chiropractic care, or physical therapy you need for that bruised shoulder will be covered one hundred percent by me.”

“Oh, Mr. Sterling, you don't need to do all that—!” Tessa protested, shaking her head.

“I insist,” Grant interrupted firmly. “And furthermore, I want you to take tomorrow off. Rest, recover, let your shoulder heal. I’ll take care of Noah. I want to spend the day with my son.”

Tessa smiled, her eyes crinkling at the corners with genuine appreciation. “Thank you, Mr. Sterling. That... that means a lot.”

“Thank you, Tessa,” Grant said, standing up and placing a gentle, respectful hand on her uninjured shoulder before turning toward the door. “Get some rest.”

As Grant walked out of the nursery and headed down the hallway toward his home office, his mind was already formulating the legal steps required to ensure Vivienne faced the full legal consequences of her assault.

And as he sat down at his mahogany desk in the quiet study, Grant knew that the trash had finally been taken out—and his real life was just beginning.
