Chapter 10 - THE ART OF STANDING ALONE

The sun was setting over Toronto, painting the sky in deep shades of amber, violet, and gold as I locked my office door for the evening.

Downstairs, the lobby was quiet. The evening breeze carried the crisp promise of a new season.

My phone rang as I stepped out onto the sidewalk. I glanced at the screen, expecting Marisol or Elodie. Instead, it was an unknown number with an upstate New York area code.

I stared at the screen for three long seconds.

Then I pressed decline, blocked the number, and slid the phone into my coat pocket.

Some voices are not worth hearing. Some apologies are only extensions of manipulation. And some chapters are best closed without a final word.

I walked down the stone steps toward the plaza, the city lights flickering on around me like a million small stars waking up to a world that was entirely mine.

People often ask what it takes to survive a betrayal of that magnitude. They ask how a woman handles public humiliation, corporate theft, and the sudden demolition of everything she thought she knew.

The answer is simple.

You don't scream. You don't break. You don't let them make you the emotional casualty of their own disaster.

You stay calm. You keep your receipts. You build your own foundation brick by brick.

And when they finally look around expecting to see you begging for a seat at their table, you simply turn around, walk out the door, and build an empire of your own.
