Chapter 10 - The Broken Mask

The cold rain began to fall across the concrete plaza outside the gate, spattering Robert’s expensive coat.

He stood paralyzed, looking at the grey sedan idling inside the base perimeter.

Through the tinted rear window, a silhouette moved.

Evelyn stepped out of the vehicle.

She wore a dark wool trench coat over her uniform, her boots clicking with deliberate authority against the wet asphalt.

The armed Marines snapped to attention the instant her feet touched the ground.

“Director,” the corporal barked, presenting arms.

Evelyn raised a hand slightly, dismissing the protocol.

She walked toward the iron gate, stopping three feet from where her family stood shivering in the rain.

Diane scrambled up from the car hood, running toward the bars with tears streaming down her face.

“Evelyn! My baby!” Diane cried, her hands clawing at the cold steel.

“Tell them it’s a mistake!”

“You’re my daughter!”

“I gave birth to you!”

“You can't let them arrest your father!”

Evelyn looked at her mother.

There was no anger in her eyes, no vindictive pleasure, no petty triumph.

There was only the terrifying, unyielding calm of an absolute stranger.

“When I was fourteen, Mother, you forgot to pick me up from the regional science finals because Caroline had a dance recital,” Evelyn said softly.

“When I was eighteen, you used my college savings to buy Caroline’s debutante gown.”

“When I joined the service, you told our relatives I was working at a call center because you were ashamed of a military child.”

“We were trying to protect our social standing!” Diane sobbed hysterically.

“You never understood the pressure your father was under!”

“Your social standing was built on stolen government appropriations,” Evelyn replied, her voice cutting through the falling rain.

She shifted her gaze to Robert.

Robert was trembling from head to toe, looking at her as if she were a judge holding a black cap.

“Evelyn... please,” Robert begged, his pride entirely shattered.

“I made bad investments.”

“The interest rates climbed, the banks were closing in... I only took the kickbacks to keep the house!”

“I did it for our family!”

“You did it for yourself,” Evelyn stated simply.

“You built dry docks with substandard concrete.”

“If a nuclear submarine had docked in Portsmouth next spring, the foundation could have collapsed under the hull.”

“You risked the lives of two hundred sailors to keep your membership at the golf club.”

Robert dropped to his knees on the wet asphalt, clutching the iron rails.

“Don't do this, Evelyn.”

“I will confess to the civil board.”

“I will surrender the licenses.”

“Just don't send the federal marshals!”

“The marshals are already at your firm, Father,” Evelyn said.

Two unmarked black law enforcement vehicles pulled up behind Robert’s Mercedes, their blue and red emergency lights flashing silently through the rain.

Four federal agents in windbreakers stepped out.

Caroline screamed, backing away into the side of the car.

“Nate! Do something!” Caroline shrieked, clutching her head.

“You’re a SEAL! You have power!”

Nathan looked down at her with cold pity.

“I fight for men who sacrifice their lives for this country, Caroline.”

“I don't fight for people who sell it out for champagne.”

The federal agents approached Robert Bennett.

One of them produced a gold badge and a folded paper document.

“Robert Bennett, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit federal procurement fraud and endangerment of military assets.”

Robert didn't fight.

He allowed the agents to pull his hands behind his back.

The click of the steel handcuffs was loud and final in the quiet morning air.

Diane fell to her knees beside the car, weeping uncontrollably into her wet sleeves.

Caroline stood frozen, her designer clothes soaked with rain, staring at the sister she had mocked less than twelve hours ago.

Evelyn turned back toward her vehicle, not waiting to see them lead her father away.

“Evelyn!” Caroline called out, her voice cracking with pure despair.

“What about me?”

“What am I supposed to do now?”

Evelyn stopped with her hand on the car door.

She looked back over her shoulder, her gray eyes steady and calm.

“Get a job, Caroline.”

May you like

“Somewhere in an office.”

Evelyn climbed into the vehicle, and the heavy door closed with a solid, impenetrable thud.
