Chapter 10 - FIRE AND GLASS ON LAKE SHORE DRIVE

The silence of the penthouse was shattered by the sharp concussive blast of breaching charges on the private elevator doors.
Steel shrapnel and heavy smoke tore through the grand foyer, triggering the residential fire suppression alarms.
Automatic sprinkler heads hissed to life, spraying cold mist across the dark hardwood floors.
Six heavily armed operatives dressed in sterile tactical armor surged into the hallway.
Marcus Vale led the assault team, his face set in a grim, desperate scowl.
He had realized that failure tonight meant Jonathan Mercer would liquidate him to eliminate loose ends.
"Clear the rooms!" Marcus shouted over the blaring alarm.
"Recover the drive and eliminate all witnesses!"
From the darkened archway of the main salon, Dominic Vance opened fire with his combat shotgun.
The heavy buckshot blasted through the first operative’s body armor, throwing him backward into the elevator lobby.
The remaining contractors immediately returned fire, unleashing a barrage of suppressed rifle rounds that tore through the plaster walls.
Adrian pulled Emily behind a reinforced brick pillar flanking the dining room.
"Stay down," Adrian ordered, his voice steady despite the hail of splintering wood and shattered plaster.
"Do not move from this cover until I call your name."
He drew his customized Colt .45 from his shoulder holster, checking the chamber with smooth, practiced muscle memory.
Adrian stepped out from behind the pillar, firing three rapid, precision shots into the smoke-filled corridor.
Two contractors collapsed into the mist, their weapons clattering against the marble tiles.
Marcus Vale realized his team was being systematically dismantled in the choke point.
He broke away from the main fireteam, sprinting through the adjoining library to flank Adrian’s position.
Marcus kicked open the double French doors leading into the salon, raising his tactical pistol toward Adrian’s back.
Before Marcus could squeeze the trigger, Adrian spun with inhuman speed.
Adrian grabbed Marcus’s outstretched wrist, forcing the muzzle toward the ceiling as a round blew through the plaster molding.
Adrian drove a savage elbow into Marcus’s jaw, followed by a vicious sweep that brought both men crashing through the glass coffee table.
Tempered glass shattered into thousands of crystal shards across the Persian rug.
Marcus scrambled for his dropped weapon, his eyes wild with adrenaline.
Adrian caught him by the lapels, lifting him off the floor and slamming him against the reinforced concrete pillar.
Marcus gasped for breath, spitting blood across Adrian’s dark coat.
Adrian pressed the cold steel barrel of his Colt directly beneath Marcus’s chin.
"Drop the command radio," Adrian whispered, his voice cutting cleanly through the ringing alarms.
Marcus looked into Adrian’s eyes and saw the absolute, terrifying certainty of death.
He opened his fingers, letting the encrypted satellite radio drop to the floor.
Dominic stepped into the room, kicking the remaining weapons away from the subdued contractors in the foyer.
"The floor is secure, Adrian," Dominic reported, wiping plaster dust from his forehead.
Emily emerged from behind the pillar, unhurt, clutching the recovered laptop against her chest.
Adrian looked down at the satellite communicator on the rug.
The screen was blinking green, indicating an active, open audio channel to Halcyon Holdings’ corporate headquarters.
Adrian picked up the device and brought it to his mouth.
"Jonathan Mercer," Adrian said into the microphone.
Across town, in the sixty-story glass monolith of Halcyon Tower, dead silence fell over the executive boardroom.
Jonathan Mercer sat alone at the head of a twenty-seat conference table, holding his private receiver with trembling fingers.
"Who is this?" Mercer demanded, his arrogant voice cracking with sudden panic.
"This is Adrian Moretti," came the icy response over the speaker.
Mercer stood up abruptly, knocking his leather executive chair backward.
"Moretti... whatever you want, I will double it."
"Ten million dollars in unmarked bearer bonds."
"Just give me the Carter girl and the drive."
Adrian’s low, dark laugh came through the line like a cold wind across a graveyard.
"You cannot buy your way out of this room, Mercer."
"You sent hitmen to an old schoolteacher's house in Ohio."
"You sent mercenaries to assault my family on an interstate line."
"And you thought a few million dollars could wipe away the blood."
Emily stepped up beside Adrian, taking the microphone from his hand.
"Mercer," she said, her voice resonant with unshakeable authority.
"The unedited Drake Hotel surveillance tape has already been transmitted to the federal prosecutor's office."
"Along with your complete offshore accounting ledgers from Salvatore Ramos’s vault."
"Your private equity board has already scheduled an emergency removal meeting."
"The United States Marshals Service is entering your lobby right now."
Mercer stared out through the floor-to-ceiling windows of his top-floor penthouse.
Forty floors below, on the streets of downtown Chicago, dozens of flashing red and blue lights were converging on the entrance of Halcyon Tower.
Sirens wailed in a deafening chorus that echoed all the way up to his glass office.
Mercer sank back against the wall, his empire collapsing around him in a matter of seconds.
"This isn't over!" Mercer screamed into the phone.
Adrian took the receiver back, his final words falling like a heavy gavel in a courtroom.

"It is over, Jonathan."
"And we are coming to watch you fall."
