Chapter 13 - The Convoy Through the Black River Gorge

At two o’clock in the afternoon, a motorcade of five reinforced black sport utility vehicles rolled out of the Marino estate.

The Federal Marshals had coordinated an emergency escort to the United States District Court in Philadelphia.

There would be no sealed envelopes sent through postal couriers.

There would be no digital transmissions that could be intercepted by corrupted state telecommunication towers.

The original micro-SD card and four forensic hard-drive copies were riding inside Damon Marino’s armored Suburban.

Samuel Marino sat in the rear seat beside Leo, who was coloring quietly in a sketchpad, completely unaware of the war around him.

Olivia sat in the front passenger seat, her eyes scanning the gray tree line flanking the interstate highway.

Marcus drove with his left arm, his injured right shoulder immobilized in a composite sling.

Damon sat in the middle row, an encrypted satellite radio linked to the lead Federal Marshal’s vehicle three hundred yards ahead.

"Marshal Miller," Damon spoke into the microphone.

"What is our status at the Black River Gorge crossing?"

"State police have blocked the commercial lanes for unexpected roadwork," Miller’s voice crackled through the speaker.

"We are routing the convoy across the two-lane suspension bridge."

"Stay tight."

Olivia felt a sudden, cold constriction in her stomach.

"Damon," she said, turning around in her seat.

"The suspension bridge."

"What about it, Olivia?"

"Six years ago, before Vance injected me, I heard him on the phone in the hallway."

"He wasn't talking to your brother."

"He was talking to someone named Raymond."

"He said: If the transport fails on the highway, drop the span at Black River."

Damon’s eyes widened in instant alarm.

He grabbed the radio handset.

"Miller! Abort the bridge crossing! Pull the lead vehicle back immediately!"

Before the federal marshal could respond, a deafening explosion echoed through the gorge ahead.

A blinding wall of fire and concrete dust erupted at the northern anchor tower of the suspension bridge.

The lead Federal Marshal’s cruiser was caught in the concussive wave, its chassis lifted off the asphalt and slammed against the guardrail.

Support cables snapped like over-tightened cello strings, whipping across the road surface with terrifying speed.

"Reverse!" Damon yelled to Marcus.

"Reverse the convoy now!"

Marcus slammed the transmission into reverse, the heavy armored Suburban spinning its tires against the asphalt.

Behind them, two heavy industrial dump trucks swung sideways across the two-lane entrance ramp, blocking all retreat.

From the wooded ridge above the gorge, a dozen riflemen dressed in civilian hunting gear opened fire.

Heavy-caliber rounds slammed into the bulletproof glass of the Suburban with the deafening sound of sledgehammers on iron.

The side windows spiderwebbed instantly into frosted patterns of white, but the ballistic glass held.

Leo dropped his crayons and buried his head into Samuel’s chest, crying out in fear.

Samuel did not panic.

The deaf grandfather wrapped his arms around the boy, shielding his small body with his own bulk.

With his free hand, Samuel reached under the passenger seat and pulled a heavy steel toggle switch mounted to the floorboard.

"What is that?" Olivia shouted over the deafening drumbeat of rifle fire.

"Estate protocol," Damon replied, drawing a combat shotgun from the locking rack between the front seats.

"My grandfather never buys a vehicle without personal modifications."

Underneath the rear bumper of the Suburban, four pressurized pneumatic nozzles discharged a dense, billowing cloud of white chemical fog.

Within three seconds, the entire roadway behind the vehicle was engulfed in impenetrable, vision-blocking smoke.

The sniper fire from the ridge immediately went wild, bullets sparking uselessly against the pavement and guardrails.

Marcus stomped on the accelerator, driving the heavy vehicle backward through the smoke cloud.

The reinforced steel push-bumper of the Suburban slammed into the driver-side door of the blocking dump truck with bone-jarring force.

The impact shoved the heavy truck aside by three feet, creating a narrow gap between the bumper and the cliff face.

"Hang on!" Marcus shouted, wrenching the steering wheel hard to the left.

The Suburban bounced over the curb, scraping metal against rock, and burst through the perimeter barrier onto the old logging road.

Behind them, the smoke cloud began to clear, revealing four pursuing pickup trucks filled with armed men.

"They aren't state troopers," Olivia observed, her eyes wide as she tracked the pursuit in the side mirror.

"They are private security contractors from the waterfront docks."

Damon racked the slide of the combat shotgun and lowered the rear armored viewport by two inches.

"They made a fatal mistake coming into this gorge," Damon said coldly.

He fired three heavy slugs into the engine block of the lead pursuit truck.

The truck’s radiator exploded in steam and oil, its front wheels locking as it veered violently off the embankment and tumbled into the ravine.

Samuel reached over and handed Olivia a loaded semi-automatic sidearm from the door pocket.

The old man looked into her eyes and nodded once with absolute, unquestioning confidence.

Olivia took the heavy weapon into her hands.

She did not hesitate.

May you like

She did not tremble.

Six years of fear, confusion, and erased memories vanished as she leaned toward the side viewport, ready to defend the child behind her.
