Chapter 8 - The Confession in the Cellar

The sub-basement beneath the wine cellar was a vaulted stone dungeon constructed during the Prohibition era to store illicit contraband.

Water dripped steadily from the arched ceiling, echoing through the cold darkness with the rhythmic torture of a water clock.

In the center of the damp room, illuminated by a single halogen work lamp, Mrs. Gable sat strapped to a heavy iron chair.

Her once-pristine black uniform was torn at the shoulder, her hair disheveled, and her face pale with mounting panic.

Standing in the shadows by the reinforced steel door was Sheriff Higgins, his uniform unbuttoned, his face drenched in nervous sweat.

The sheriff paced back and forth, chewing his thumb until it bled, casting terrified glances at the armed private guards standing motionless along the wall.

The heavy iron door swung open with a dull, echoing groan.

Lorenzo Moretti walked into the cellar, moving with the cold, measured deliberate pace of an apex predator entering an enclosure.

He carried a black leather portfolio beneath his arm and a glass tumbler filled with three fingers of amber scotch.

The ambient temperature in the cellar seemed to drop instantly below freezing.

"Mr. Moretti," Mrs. Gable choked out, trying to summon her customary veneer of domestic superiority.

"You cannot hold me here against my will."

"This is false imprisonment."

"Sheriff Higgins is a sworn officer of the law; he will tell you that you are violating my constitutional rights!"

Lorenzo didn't look at her.

He pulled up a wooden crate, sat down directly in front of the housekeeper, and took a slow sip of his scotch.

"Sheriff Higgins is currently calculating whether he should draw his service weapon and attempt to shoot his way through four private military contractors," Lorenzo said casually.

"Or whether he should turn state’s evidence and testify against you and Julian to avoid spending the next thirty years in a federal penitentiary."

Sheriff Higgins froze, his face turning an ashen gray.

"Lorenzo, look, this is a massive misunderstanding," Higgins stammered, raising his hands in a placating gesture.

"I was only called to the manor to handle a domestic dispute involving a thief."

"I had no idea what was in that tea!"

Lorenzo opened the leather portfolio on his lap, pulling out a thick sheaf of printed bank statements and offshore wire confirmations.

He tossed the papers onto Mrs. Gable’s lap.

"Two million dollars," Lorenzo said, his voice flat and devoid of emotion.

"Transferred from a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands under Julian’s personal attorney."

"The first installment of five hundred thousand cleared three days after my grandfather was allegedly cremated in Zurich."

"The second installment arrived yesterday afternoon, pending the delivery of the revised corporate trust."

Mrs. Gable’s eyes bulged as she looked down at the financial paper trail that laid bare her two years of treason.

"You think you were clever, Mrs. Gable," Lorenzo continued, leaning forward until his face was inches from hers.

"You thought that by crushing an impoverished, pregnant girl under your boot, you could eliminate the last piece of leverage my grandfather left behind."

"You threatened to have her deliver her child on the concrete floor of a county jail."

"You threatened to plant stolen silver in her mattress."

"You pinched her flesh until it bruised, and you forced her down those stairs carrying fifty pounds of leaden weight, hoping the fall would kill her and her unborn child."

Mrs. Gable swallowed hard, her arrogant sneer entirely dissolving into pathetic, sniveling terror.

"Julian made me do it!" she shrieked, struggling against the leather straps binding her wrists to the chair.

"He threatened my family! He said if I didn't administer the digitoxin, he would expose my brother's gambling debts and destroy us!"

"Your brother doesn't have gambling debts, Mrs. Gable," Lorenzo interrupted coldly.

"Your brother operates a private loan-sharking ring in the lower valley funded entirely by Julian’s embezzled corporate reserves."

Lorenzo reached into his pocket and placed the amber glass vial marked '4B' onto the small wooden table beside her.

"Arthur tested the residue in this bottle twenty minutes ago," Lorenzo said.

"Synthetic digitoxin, sourced from an unlicensed pharmaceutical laboratory in Montreal."

"The same laboratory Julian visited three times last autumn."

"You have three minutes to tell me where Julian hides the original executed copies of my grandfather’s 2018 testament."

"If you speak the truth, I will allow the federal marshals to take you into custody alive."

"If you lie, or if you waste another second of my time, I will leave you in this cellar until the blizzard thaws in April."

"No one knows you are down here, Mrs. Gable."

"And as far as the county records are concerned, you left the estate on foot during the storm."

A cold, suffocating wave of dread crushed whatever defiance Mrs. Gable had left.

She looked into Lorenzo’s unblinking, lethal eyes and knew with absolute certainty that he was not bluffing.

"The safe!" she sobbed, breaking down into hysterical, ragged weeping.

"The floor safe beneath the gun cabinet in the game room!"

"The combination is seventeen, forty-four, zero-nine!"

"The original will is in there, along with the corporate ledgers Julian altered to hide the twenty million he stole from the shipping lines!"

"He planned to execute you tonight, take the girl to the abandoned quarry, and make it look like a murder-suicide pact driven by servant jealousy!"

Sheriff Higgins took a sharp step toward the door, his hand instinctively dropping toward his holster.

Before his fingers could even brush the leather grip, the cold muzzle of a tactical rifle pressed against the back of his neck.

"Don't do it, Sheriff," the lead contractor murmured quietly from the shadows.

Lorenzo stood up, dusting off his trousers with effortless poise.

"Thank you for your cooperation, Mrs. Gable," Lorenzo said, draining the last drop of scotch from his glass.

"Your service to the Moretti family is officially terminated."

Lorenzo turned toward the door, signaling to his security detail.

"Secure them both in iron cuffs and lock the outer vault door."

"When the federal marshals arrive at daybreak, hand them the portfolio and the recordings from the ceiling microphones."

"And where is Julian now?" Lorenzo asked his chief of security as they stepped into the corridor.

"He retreated to the west billiard parlor, sir," the operative reported.

"He has three armed personal bodyguards with him, and they have barricaded the double mahogany doors."

"He realizes the tea failed, and he is preparing to make a desperate run for the emergency snowcats in the maintenance garage."

A cold, feral smile touched the corners of Lorenzo’s lips.

May you like

"Let him try," Lorenzo said, chambering a round into his .45 with a sharp, metallic snap.

"It is time to remind my cousin why our grandfather left the empire to me."
