Chapter 6 - The Shattered Masquerade

The silence inside the VIP lounge was so violent that the hum of the wall sconces felt like an electric shock.

Arthur Hale stood entirely paralyzed, staring down at my hand clamped around his wrist.

His silver hair was immaculate, but the blood had completely drained from his florid face.

Sabrina’s crystal champagne flute slipped from her frozen fingers.

The fragile glass struck the polished parquet floor with a sharp, ringing crash that echoed into the rafters.

Golden wine and jagged crystal shards splattered across the hem of her emerald green gown.

She did not look down at the stain.

She looked at my lips, waiting for the illusion of my silence to reassemble itself.

Doctor Julian Wexler rose from his leather armchair so fast that his spectacles slid down his nose.

His hands trembled as he reached for the blue-backed legal documents spread across the coffee table.

"Logan, you are having an auditory hallucination," Wexler stammered, his voice climbing an octave into shrill panic.

"The neural stress has triggered an acute psychotic break."

"Arthur, call the hotel security detail immediately."

I did not release Arthur’s wrist.

I twisted my grip downward, forcing the older man down onto one knee before me.

Arthur gasped in pain, his designer tuxedo pulling tight across his broad shoulders.

"Do not insult my intelligence, Julian," I said, my voice echoing through the quiet room with absolute authority.

"Every word spoken in this room for the last four minutes has been broadcast into the grand ballroom."

"Every confession."

"Every boast about poisoning my ear drops."

"Every detail of how you and Arthur sealed the fire doors on Daniel."

Sabrina’s hands flew to her throat, her chest heaving against the silk of her dress.

"No," she whispered, her voice cracking into pure terror.

"That is impossible."

"You are deaf."

"You cannot hear us."

"You have been deaf for three years."

Before she could take another breath, the heavy mahogany double doors of the VIP lounge were kicked open.

Gio Ramirez entered the room first, his tactical sidearm unholstered and held at low-ready.

Directly behind him marched four federal marshals wearing tactical body armor with gold badges gleaming against their chests.

And stepping through the threshold between them was Doctor Evelyn Cross.

She was no longer wearing the tattered rags of a homeless vagrant.

She wore a clean charcoal suit, her dark hair pulled back into a severe, professional knot.

In her right hand, she carried the open diagnostic tablet linked to Daniel’s charred telemetry casing.

Doctor Wexler took two stumbling steps backward, his knees hitting the marble edge of the wet bar.

"Evelyn," Wexler gasped, his face gray as wet clay.

"You died in Chicago."

"I survived your hired thugs in Chicago, Julian," Evelyn replied, her voice cold as winter ice.

"And I preserved the post-mortem blood samples you tried to incinerate at St. Jude."

Arthur Hale struggled violently against my grip, his face darkening with enraged crimson.

"This is an illegal ambush!" Arthur roared, spitting as he shouted toward the federal marshals.

"I am the executive chairman of a multi-billion-dollar enterprise!"

"This boy is medically incompetent!"

"He has been declared non compos mentis by four independent boards!"

"His father’s estate belongs under my conservatorship!"

Lead Special Agent Marcus Vance stepped forward, pulling a heavy set of steel handcuffs from his tactical belt.

"Arthur Hale, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate sabotage, and federal contract fraud," Agent Vance stated calmly.

"Save your speeches for the grand jury."

Gio stepped in behind Arthur, catching the older man by his collar and snapping the steel cuffs onto his wrists with a cold, metallic click.

Sabrina backed against the velvet drapes, her eyes darting toward the secondary service entrance.

She made a sudden, frantic dash toward the narrow pantry door behind the bar.

Gio did not even have to raise his weapon.

Two armed federal agents emerged from the pantry pantry threshold, their carbines leveled directly at her chest.

Sabrina froze, her back slamming against the painted wall.

Her perfectly styled blonde hair fell across her face in disheveled strands.

"Logan, please!" she screamed, tears of genuine panic finally breaking through her vanity.

"My father made me do it!"

"He threatened to disown me if I didn't help him manage your medication!"

"I loved you, Logan!"

"I stayed by your bedside every single night for three years!"

"You let him burn my brother alive, Sabrina," I said, walking slowly toward her until I stood six inches from her face.

"And every morning, you kissed my forehead while putting poison in my ears."

"You did not love me."

"You were simply waiting for the ink on my death certificate to dry."

I turned my back on her and walked toward the grand double doors leading into the main ballroom.

The noise that hit me as the doors opened was an overwhelming wall of sound.

Eight hundred elite guests were standing on their feet in utter pandemonium.

The audio feed from our room had played over thirty-six ceiling speakers without interruption.

The socialites, the venture capitalists, the city prosecutors, and the journalists were staring at the VIP entrance in horrified fascination.

Flashbulbs went off in blinding sheets of white light as news cameras turned from the empty ceremonial stage toward me.

Reporters shouted over one another, their voices crashing against the crystal chandeliers above.

"Mister Vance! Was that Doctor Wexler’s voice on the loudspeakers?"

"Logan! Did your fiancée orchestrate the factory fire?"

I walked through the parting crowd with Gio and Evelyn flanking my shoulders.

My ears were screaming with sensory overload, the sound of eight hundred voices feeling like needles stabbing into my skull.

Yet I did not flinch.

I climbed the three carpeted steps to the center stage and stood before the silver podium microphone.

I looked out across the sea of faces that had pitied me, managed me, and written me off as an empty shell.

Behind me, federal marshals led Arthur Hale, Sabrina Hale, and Doctor Julian Wexler through the center aisle in chains.

The sound of Arthur’s heavy boots dragging across the hardwood floor was clear as a bell.

I leaned down toward the microphone.

"Three years ago, my brother Daniel died in an intentional explosion designed to conceal forty million dollars in biological theft," I announced to the room.

May you like

"Tonight, Daniel’s voice was finally heard."

"And tomorrow morning, the Vance family legacy will be cleansed of every traitor who built an empire on his grave."
