Chapter 5 - The Basement Interrogation and a Father's Debt

Within ten minutes, the grand banquet hall was entirely cleared.

Luca’s security team moved through the room like silent reapers, ushering thirty-two terrified guests toward the heavy front doors.

Cell phones were confiscated at gunpoint to prevent leaks to the press or rival syndicates.

Dominic Bellini was escorted under heavy guard to a private salon on the second floor, surrounded by three armed enforcers who made sure he didn't touch a phone or a window.

The string quartet was paid double their rate and bundled out through the kitchen exit with strict instructions that a single leaked word would result in their families disappearing.

I was not permitted to leave.

Silvio escorted me down the winding marble stairs that led not to the street, but deep beneath the Gold Coast limestone mansion.

The basement was not a cold, damp dungeon; it was a reinforced subterranean bunker finished in polished dark slate, soundproofed with specialized acoustic panels, and illuminated by sterile recessed LEDs.

In the center of the room sat a single steel chair bolted to the floor.

Vanessa Bellini was tied to it by her wrists and ankles, her expensive crimson dress torn at the shoulder, her mascara running down her pale cheeks in messy black tracks.

All of her high-society arrogance had evaporated, replaced by the raw, animalistic terror of someone who knew exactly what the Moretti family did to traitors.

Luca stood near a glass-topped table where her confiscated belongings lay spread out beneath a harsh spotlight: her smartphone, the silver compact, her jewelry, and a set of heavy brass keys.

Beside him stood Marco, his younger underboss and strategist, tapping furiously away at a military-grade laptop hooked into Vanessa’s cracked phone.

When Silvio led me into the room, Vanessa raised her swollen eyes and hissed at me.

"You ruined everything, you miserable rat," she spat through cracked lips.

"You think Luca is going to reward you? You’re just a pawn to him. He’ll throw you in the river the second he’s done with you."

"Be quiet, Vanessa," Luca said, not even looking up from the laptop screen.

His voice was completely devoid of emotion, which made it ten times more terrifying than any scream.

Luca gestured for me to stand beside the table.

I clasped my hands in front of my white apron, trying to keep my knees from knocking together in the cold subterranean air.

"Marco," Luca said. "What did we pull from the phone?"

Marco wiped his brow, turning the screen toward his boss.

"She didn't use standard cellular networks, Luca. Everything was routed through an encrypted satellite application using burn protocols."

"The incoming call Emma overheard forty minutes ago originated from an IP address bouncing off a server farm in Frankfurt."

"The offshore bank account mentioned is registered under a shell corporation called 'Aegis Maritime Holdings' in Grand Cayman."

"And the opening deposit?" Luca asked, his jaw clenching.

"Twenty-five million dollars," Marco replied, his voice grim.

"Scheduled to release into her personal trust fund at midnight, contingent on a certified death certificate bearing your name."

Luca walked slowly toward the steel chair where his betrothed sat trembling.

He rested both hands on the arms of her chair, leaning down until his lips were inches from her ear.

"Twenty-five million," Luca whispered, his tone chillingly soft.

"Your father owes six million. The Bellini fleet is operating at a forty percent loss this fiscal quarter."

"You couldn't raise twenty-five dollars on your own, Vanessa."

"Who funded the account?"

Vanessa shook her head hysterically, tears splashing onto her lap.

"I can't tell you! If I tell you, they’ll kill my mother! They’ll skin my brother alive!"

"Vanessa," Luca murmured, his grey eyes turning to ice.

"You are sitting in my basement."

"Whatever they promised to do to your family in the future is nothing compared to what I will do to you in the next five minutes if you don't give me a name."

Vanessa began to sob uncontrollably, the reality of her impending execution crushing her spirit.

"It was... it was the Council," she choked out, her voice barely audible over the hum of the air ventilation.

"The five families from New York and Detroit. They don't want your logistics empire expanding to the coast."

"They said you were becoming too powerful, that you were going to choke out their distribution lines."

"They approached me three months ago at the gala in Miami."

"They said they would wipe out my father’s debts, give me twenty-five million, and make my family the sole rulers of Chicago if I slipped the oleander into your meal."

Luca listened without blinking, his expression frozen in absolute stillness.

"And the vault combination?" Luca asked, recalling my statement from the dining hall.

"What vault?"

Vanessa looked up, her eyes wide with terror, then her gaze flicked unexpectedly toward me.

"Not a bank vault," she whispered.

"The private safe inside your father’s old elevator maintenance company in Pilsen."

My breath hitched in my throat.

My ears began to ring with a high-pitched whine.

The room seemed to tilt violently on its axis.

"What did you just say?" I gasped, taking an involuntary step forward.

Luca’s head snapped toward me, his eyes narrowing as he caught the sudden shock on my face.

"Emma," Luca ordered, his voice commanding. "What does your father have to do with this?"

"My father... my father worked for Reed Elevator Services for thirty-six years," I stammered, my chest tightening until I could barely breathe.

"His workshop... his old maintenance office is in the basement of the old Pilsen industrial foundry."

Vanessa let out a ragged, broken laugh that sounded half-mad.

"Your father didn't just repair elevators, you stupid girl," Vanessa sneered, staring at me with pure hatred.

"Thirty years ago, Arthur Reed built the secret hydraulic shafts and hidden dead-drops for the entire Chicago underworld."

"He built the concrete vault beneath the foundry where Luca’s father stored the master ledgers containing every corrupt judge, senator, and FBI agent on the syndicate payroll."

"The New York families didn't just want Luca dead."

"They wanted the ledgers to blackmail the entire state of Illinois."

"And your crippled father is the only living man on earth who knows the mechanical combination to the hydraulic lock."

The realization struck me like a physical blow to the solar plexus.

My father hadn't suffered a random stroke six months ago.

The sudden illness, the broken health, the constant fear he carried in his eyes whenever a car slowed down outside our apartment window—it wasn't old age.

Someone had been looking for those ledgers.

Someone had tried to break him.

Before I could process the horror unraveling my entire existence, Marco’s tablet let out a sharp, high-priority alarm.

Marco tapped the screen, and his face turned the color of ash.

"Boss," Marco said, his voice urgent and tight.

"We’ve got a situation."

"Our perimeter surveillance on the South Side just picked up three unmarked black SUVs pulling up to an apartment complex in Pilsen."

Luca straightened up immediately, his eyes locking onto mine.

"Whose apartment, Marco?" Luca demanded.

May you like

Marco swallowed hard, looking directly at me with profound pity.

"Arthur Reed's."
