Chapter 8 - Whispers from a Dead Line

The sharp chime of Emma’s cheap cellular phone split the air once again, making every person in the room freeze.
Ryan signaled his security tech, who immediately brought an audio interface cable to link the phone to the room's speakers.
The screen displayed a third incoming transmission from the same scrambled, encrypted channel.
Instead of a text message, the interface showed an incoming audio file with a self-destruct countdown timer set for thirty seconds.
Emma’s hand trembled as she hovered her finger over the touchscreen.
"Put it on speaker," Ryan instructed quietly.
Emma tapped the play icon.
A burst of white static hissed through the high-end stereo speakers mounted in the dining hall walls.
Then, a voice cut through the electronic noise—ragged, hoarse, but unmistakably familiar.
"Emma," the voice gasped, fighting for breath between syllables.
Emma let out a choked sob, clutching her chest as if she had been struck.
"Ethan," she whispered against the cold glass.
"Emma, if you are hearing this, Dad took the bait and Miller’s timeline has accelerated," Ethan’s recorded voice rasped through the speakers.
"Dad, listen to me carefully if you are with her."
"Miller doesn't care about the 2006 evidence logs anymore."
"Those logs are just paper."
"The Zurich-Atlantic depository in the financial district holds the master safety deposit box that Daniel Reed locked before he disappeared."
"That box contains the offshore bank routing numbers and the original audio recordings that incriminate forty-two sitting city officials, judges, and commissioners."
"The depository's vault protocol was programmed with Daniel's biological encryption."
"Miller figured out three days ago that Emma is carrying my child."
"The baby carries fifty percent of Emma’s genetic structure, which shares direct biological continuity with Daniel Reed’s line."
"They don't want to hurt Emma right away."
"They want to take her to an unauthorized medical clinic in the industrial district to perform an emergency amniocentesis."
"They need the fetal genetic markers to synthesize the biometric passkey before the sunrise audit at the depository."
"Dad, Miller has twelve private tactical contractors moving toward the DeMarco estate right now."
"They aren't state police."
"They are off-duty mercenaries who don't care about rules of engagement."
"Get Emma into the reinforced safe room beneath—"
The audio transmission cut off with the sound of a metal door being kicked open on the other end, followed by the muffled crack of a stun grenade.
The recording self-destructed, leaving the phone screen completely blank.
Detective Grant gripped the back of a mahogany chair, his face entirely devoid of color.
"My God," Grant choked out, tears running freely down his cheeks.
"Miller is going to harvest the baby's genetic markers to loot the depository."
"He isn't trying to cover up an old murder; he's trying to steal a forty-million-dollar blackmail vault before he retires."
Emma’s legs gave out, but Ryan DeMarco caught her by the elbows before she could hit the floor.
His grip was steady, firm, and surprisingly gentle as he guided her back to the upholstered sofa.
"Nobody is touching you, Emma," Ryan said, his voice dropping into a deadly, focused calm.
"Nobody is touching this baby."
Suddenly, the massive crystal chandelier hanging from the high ceiling flickered violently.
A loud mechanical pop echoed from the basement utility conduits.
All the primary lights inside the mansion shut off simultaneously, plunging the grand room into thick darkness.
A heartbeat later, the emergency red auxiliary lights hummed to life along the baseboards, casting long, crimson shadows across the walls.
Ryan’s security chief rushed through the double doors, his tactical vest fastened tight and his assault rifle slung across his chest.
"Boss, perimeter tripwires on the north and west driveways have been severed," the guard reported rapidly.
"Three unmarked black utility vans just rammed through the outer security barrier."
"They cut the municipal power line at the transformer station down the road."
"They are deploying thermal smoke across the front gardens."
"How many hostiles?" Ryan asked without a trace of panic.
"At least twelve, possibly fifteen," the chief replied.
"Heavy body armor, suppressed automatic carbines, and breaching charges."
Rose DeMarco turned toward Leonard Shaw with a look of absolute determination.
"Leonard, take the medical kit and guide Emma down to the sub-level bunker through the private elevator," Rose instructed.
"Ryan, I want every perimeter defense activated immediately."
"Grandmother, you need to go with them," Ryan insisted, looking at the matriarch.
Rose smiled faintly, revealing the cold iron that had preserved her family through four decades of syndicate wars.

"I did not spend fifty years building this empire to hide in a basement while municipal parasites shoot up my parlor," Rose said.
"Give Samuel a spare magazine and let us show Deputy Chief Miller what happens when you bring a street gang to a DeMarco doorstep."
