Chapter 12 - The Heart of the Fortress

The cellar was vast, silent, and illuminated only by the faint amber glow of decorative wrought-iron wall sconces.

Rows upon rows of dusty vintage wine bottles rested in floor-to-ceiling wooden racks stretching into the darkness.

Emma pulled Ryan into the shadow of a massive ten-foot oak barrel, helping him sit down on an upturned wooden crate.

She quickly checked his bandage under her jacket; the fresh blood had stopped spreading, but his skin was dangerously clammy.

"Clara, stay behind this rack and keep the ledger tucked inside the duffel," Emma ordered in a sharp whisper.

Clara nodded obediently, crouching low between two columns of aged French cabernet with her eyes wide and alert.

Ryan pulled a compact electronic scanner from his pocket and pressed the sensor against the mortar of the brick wall.

A faint green waveform flickered across the screen, tracking power conduits and electronic signals above their heads.

"The main security hub is located on the second subterranean level," Ryan explained in a low murmur.

"Vincent converted the old coal bunker into an air-gapped server farm three years ago," he added.

"That's where the automated data wipe is executing from," Emma noted, checking the magazine of her pistol.

"Yes," Ryan replied, racking the slide of his own weapon with a practiced, fluid motion.

"The terminal is protected by a magnetic blast door and two internal guard posts," Ryan explained.

"How many men does Vincent keep down here?" Emma asked, peering through the wooden slats of the wine racks.

"Four private bodyguards inside the vault ante-room," Ryan answered without hesitation.

"They are Vincent's personal Praetorian guard, men who have served him for thirty years," Ryan continued.

"They don't care about syndicate politics, board votes, or corporate shares," he warned.

"They will shoot on sight without asking for identification," Ryan stated with absolute certainty.

Suddenly, the heavy iron door at the far end of the cellar clicked open with a dull mechanical hum.

The steady click of polished dress shoes echoed across the flagstone floor, approaching the central aisle.

Emma and Ryan pressed their backs flat against the curved wood of the barrel, holding their breath in unison.

A man in a sharp charcoal suit walked into view, holding an encrypted radio receiver against his lapel.

It was Viktor Vance, the older brother of Ryan's pilot David, and Vincent Cole's most ruthless personal enforcer.

"The perimeter sensors on the north lawn tripped on an offshore wind gust," Viktor reported into his radio.

"Reset the grid and double the patrol around the private helipad," Viktor commanded through the channel.

"Mr. Cole wants all external communications cut before the noon transfer executes," Viktor added.

The radio crackled back with a curt confirmation from the control room above.

Viktor tucked the radio away and turned toward the reserve wine vault, stopping barely eight feet from where Emma knelt.

Emma met Ryan's eyes in the amber shadows; there was no room for hesitation, no space for mercy.

Ryan moved first, stepping out from behind the oak barrel with ghost-like silence despite his shattered deltoid.

He hooked his right arm around Viktor's throat from behind, cutting off the man's carotid artery in a vice-like sleeper hold.

Viktor's eyes bugged out in shock as he reached desperately for the suppressed pistol in his shoulder holster.

Emma lunged forward instantly, catching Viktor's gun hand before his fingers could close around the grip.

She twisted his wrist downward with ruthless efficiency, stripping the weapon from his fingers without making a sound.

Viktor thrash violently against Ryan's grip, but Ryan locked his forearm tighter, using all his remaining strength.

Within eight seconds, Viktor's struggles weakened, his legs turned to rubber, and he went completely limp.

Ryan lowered the unconscious enforcer onto the cold flagstones, resting his forehead against the stone floor to catch his breath.

"Check his pockets for the executive keycard," Ryan whispered, his chest heaving with exhaustion.

Emma searched Viktor's tailored jacket, quickly pulling out a thick platinum keycard embossed with the Cole family crest.

"Got it," Emma said, holding the card up in the dim light.

Clara slipped out from between the wine racks, her eyes wide as she looked down at the fallen enforcer.

"Is he...?" Clara whispered, her voice trembling.

"He's unconscious for the next twenty minutes," Emma assured her sister, tucking Viktor's sidearm into her belt.

"We need to move now before the security room notices his radio went silent," Ryan commanded, pulling himself upright.

They navigated the cellar corridors, following the thick black fiber-optic cables that snaked along the stone ceiling.

At the end of the corridor stood an imposing vault door made of solid brushed titanium.

Above the door, a digital LED display glowed in ominous crimson digits:

TIME TO PURGE: 01:14:22.

One hour and fourteen minutes remained before the automated system wiped every record from existence.

Beside the titanium door was a biometric glass scanner paired with a digital keycard slot.

"The outer door takes Viktor's card," Ryan said, sliding the platinum keycard into the reader.

The electronic panel beeped with a soft chime, and the heavy titanium bolts slid back with a pneumatic hiss.

The door swung open to reveal a brightly lit, sterile ante-room lined with bulletproof glass and computer banks.

Sitting at the primary surveillance console were two private guards with automatic carbines slung across their tactical vests.

Both men spun around in their swivel chairs as the door opened, reaching for their weapons in pure reflex.

Emma raised Viktor's suppressed pistol and fired two precise double-taps into the electronic control terminal between them.

Sparks exploded in a brilliant shower from the master terminal, blinding the two guards with sudden electrical fire.

Ryan surged through the doorway, leveling his sidearm and firing with surgical, non-lethal precision.

Two high-velocity rounds caught the guards in their tactical vests, knocking both men backward out of their chairs.

Before the guards could recover their balance, Emma closed the distance, striking the first guard across the temple with her weapon.

Ryan drove his heel into the second guard's chest, pinning him against the steel base of the server rack until he yielded.

Silence slammed back down over the subterranean vault, broken only by the hum of the cooling fans and the crackle of shorted wires.

Emma quickly retrieved the zip-ties from the security desk, binding the hands and feet of both guards with ruthless efficiency.

Clara stepped into the room, staring in awe at the massive wall of glowing servers humming within the glass chamber.

"Is this where everything is stored?" Clara asked, her voice echoing in the sterile room.

"This is the heart of Vincent's machine," Ryan answered, walking over to the central glass partition.

On the other side of the glass partition, sitting in a high-backed leather chair before a monolithic terminal, was an old man.

He wore an elegant charcoal cardigan over an open-collared white linen shirt, holding a glass of amber scotch.

His white hair was immaculately combed, his wrinkled face calm and devoid of surprise.

Vincent Cole turned his chair slowly to face the bulletproof glass, a faint, mocking smile touching his lips.

May you like

"You're five minutes late, Ryan," the patriarch's voice echoed through the intercom system.

"I expected you before the morning coffee got cold," Vincent stated, raising his glass in a cruel, mocking toast.
