Chapter 10 - The Price of Defiance

Night fell over Manhattan like a shroud of black velvet.

At nine o'clock, the Fifth Avenue penthouse was bathed in the warm, amber glow of the library fireplace.

On the mahogany coffee table sat the evening editions of the New York Post and the Wall Street Journal.

The headlines screamed in bold black ink:

PORT CORRUPTION SCANDAL: COUNCILMAN STERLING INDICTED ON FEDERAL RACKETEERING CHARGES.

KOLOV SYNDICATE ASSETS FROZEN BY US TREASURY AFTER DOCK LEDGER SURFACES.

Lucia sat on the velvet sofa, pouring hot cider for Emma and Toby.

Toby was sitting comfortably in his new motorized chair, his face glowing with an excitement he hadn't displayed since he was a teenager.

"They showed Dad’s picture on the evening news, Emma!" Toby said, his voice choking with pride.

"They called him a hero of the waterfront!"

"The Longshoremen’s Union just announced they're renaming the central dock office after Arthur Carter!"

Emma smiled, but her hazel eyes kept drifting toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Fifth Avenue.

Despite the victory in the hearing room, a cold knot of dread remained coiled in her stomach.

She had lived in fear of Kolov’s shadow for too long to believe the monster would simply roll over and die.

A man who had lost his shipping routes, his political protection, his weapons shipment, and his bank accounts was not a retreating enemy.

He was a rabid beast backed into a corner with nothing left to lose.

I walked out of my private study, wearing a dark turtleneck and tailored trousers, holding a satellite phone in my hand.

"Marco," I said into the receiver.

"What is the status of Kolov's penthouse at Hudson Yards?"

"Boss," Marco’s voice crackled through the encrypted speaker.

"The federal marshals raided the building forty minutes ago with a warrant for his arrest."

"The penthouse was completely empty."

"His personal security detail abandoned the lobby."

"Kolov liquidated his offshore safety vaults and vanished into the city before the warrant was even signed."

My eyes narrowed.

"He didn't run to an airport," I stated, knowing how a trapped predator thinks.

"Every private airfield in Teterboro and Westchester has been locked down by Homeland Security."

"He knows his life is over."

"He will want blood before he falls."

"Double the perimeter security on the Fifth Avenue gates immediately."

"I already have six men on the roof and four in the courtyard, Boss," Marco replied.

"I am personally monitoring the exterior cameras from the security room."

I hung up the phone and walked into the library.

Emma stood up from the sofa the moment I entered, her gaze searching my face with sharp intuition.

"He’s not in custody, is he?" Emma asked softly.

"No," I replied, keeping my voice level.

"He fled before the feds breached his tower."

"He is somewhere in Manhattan with whatever mercenaries he has left."

Toby gripped the armrests of his wheelchair, his knuckles turning pale.

"He’s coming here, isn't he?"

"Let him come, Toby," I said, resting my hand on the boy's shoulder.

"This house is a fortress."

"No one enters without my permission."

Suddenly, the room was plunged into pitch-black darkness.

The roaring fireplace was the only remaining source of light, casting violent, dancing shadows across the mahogany bookshelves.

The hum of the central ventilation system died.

The armored security shutters on the perimeter windows failed to lower.

Emma gasped, instinctively stepping closer to my side.

"The power grid..." Lucia whispered, her voice trembling in the dark.

"Dominic, the penthouse has independent backup generators!"

"They were cut from the basement service line," I said, my voice dropping to a deadly whisper as I reached into my shoulder holster and drew a custom black Staccato 2011 pistol.

"They have someone inside the utility tunnel."

At that moment, the high-frequency screech of breaking glass echoed from the service pantry at the rear of the kitchen.

Emma’s eyes widened with sudden, terrifying recognition.

"The service dumbwaiter!" Emma hissed, grabbing my sleeve.

"When I used to deep-clean the kitchen, I noticed the old coal chute connects directly from the underground utility tunnel to the service pantry!"

"It bypasses the armored doors in the foyer!"

"They’re not breaching the front gate—they’re coming through the pantry!"

Before I could answer, three heavily armed men clad in dark tactical gear kicked the kitchen doors open, raising suppressed submachine guns into the library.

They wore night-vision goggles, their weapons sweeping the room with deadly intent.

"Castellano!" one of them shouted through a tactical respirator.

"Kolov sends his regards!"

I pushed Emma and Lucia behind the heavy solid-mahogany desk with my left arm while raising my pistol with my right.

Two rapid, deafening gunshots cracked through the dark room.

The lead mercenary took two hollow-point rounds directly to his chest plate, the kinetic impact throwing him backward into the dining table, smashing antique crystal to the floor.

The second mercenary opened fire with his submachine gun, spraying a hail of nine-millimeter rounds into the bookshelves above our heads.

Wood splinters and shredded leather volumes rained down like confetti.

"Toby, stay down!" Emma screamed, throwing her own body over her brother’s wheelchair to shield him from the ricochets.

I rolled from behind the desk, firing three calculated shots into the muzzle flash of the second shooter.

A bullet struck the man’s throat; he dropped his weapon and collapsed onto the hardwood floor with a wet gurgle.

The third mercenary brought his barrel down, aiming directly at Emma’s exposed back.

"Emma!" Lucia cried out.

In a flash of desperate courage, Toby slammed his motorized wheelchair forward into maximum reverse.

The heavy titanium footrest of the chair smashed into the third mercenary’s shins with bone-snapping force.

The mercenary lost his balance, his burst of gunfire tearing into the ceiling plaster above.

Before the assassin could recover his footing, I closed the distance, grabbed the barrel of his submachine gun, twisted it upward, and drove the butt of my pistol into the side of his skull.

The man crashed to the floor, unconscious and bleeding profusely onto the Persian rug.

Silence descended over the penthouse once more.

The smell of ozone, cordite, and shattered wood hung heavy in the air.

Emma rose slowly from Toby’s lap, her breathing ragged, her eyes wide as she looked at the three fallen mercenaries.

"Toby... are you hurt?" she choked out, running her hands over her brother’s chest.

"I'm fine, Em," Toby panted, adrenaline coursing through his veins.

"The chair... the chair took the blow."

The heavy library doors were suddenly kicked open from the hallway.

Marco rushed inside, holding a shotgun, followed by four Castellano security operators with high-powered flashlights.

"Boss!" Marco shouted, sweeping his light across the bodies on the floor.

"The utility tunnel has been cleared! We neutralized two more at the street grate!"

"Bring the lights back online," I commanded, lowering my pistol and checking the magazine.

Within ten seconds, the emergency secondary batteries kicked in, flooding the library with warm chandelier light.

I looked down at the unconscious leader of the strike team.

I kicked his tactical mask off with the toe of my shoe.

It was not Kolov.

It was an elite contract killer from an international syndicate.

Pinned to the collar of his tactical vest was a small, encrypted burner phone.

The phone began to vibrate against the floor, buzzing like an angry hornet.

The caller ID on the glowing screen showed a single name: Dmitri Kolov.

I bent down, picked up the vibrating phone with my gloved hand, and pressed the green accept button.

I held it to my ear.

A raspy, venomous laugh came through the speaker.

"Dominic," Kolov’s voice snarled, trembling with unhinged madness and exhaustion.

"Did my boys make your living room pretty?"

"Your boys are dead, Dmitri," I replied, my voice steady, cold, and utterly devoid of fear.

"And you are running out of breath."

"You took my ports, Castellano!" Kolov screamed, his voice cracking over the line.

"You took my money! You ruined my reputation with that union trash’s notebook!"

"You think this ends in a courtroom?"

"I am at the old sugar refinery on the Queens waterfront."

"I have twenty pounds of industrial explosive strapped to the fuel tanks."

"If you want this finished, come alone."

"If I see a single federal badge or one of your private strike teams, I will detonate the entire pier and take three city blocks of Brooklyn with me."

"And after that, I will make sure Emma Carter’s mother dies screaming in that hospital bed."

The line went dead.

The library was so quiet you could hear the ashes settling in the fireplace.

Lucia looked at me with horror in her eyes.

"Dominic, it’s a trap! You cannot go there alone!"

Emma stepped forward, walking until she stood directly in front of me.

She looked into my dark eyes, her own hazel gaze burning with an intensity that matched my own.

"He is a coward, Dominic," Emma whispered, her voice steady and resolute.

"He only knows how to strike in the dark against people who cannot fight back."

"Don't let him die in the shadows."

"Make him face the man he tried to destroy."

I looked down at Emma Carter.

She had taken his blows.

She had endured his terror.

And now she was standing in my home, ready to see the monster put into the earth.

I turned to Marco.

"Bring the heavy armor," I said softly.
