Chapter 15 - The Vows Unbroken

The sun descended toward the western bluffs of Lake Forest, casting a golden, amber glow over the sprawling lawns of the Kane estate.
It was exactly one year since the bleak November morning when a homeless woman in a nineteen-dollar dress had walked down the aisle of a freezing chapel.
Tonight, the estate was filled not with fearful sycophants and treacherous syndicate capos, but with laughter, classical string music, and the genuine warmth of trusted friends and family.
Ruth Hayes sat comfortably in a beautifully upholstered velvet armchair near the grand piano, her mind clear and calm, smiling brightly as she listened to the pianist play her favorite melody.
A dedicated private nurse stood nearby, but Ruth did not need constant assistance anymore; the specialized neurological treatments funded by the Kane foundation had stabilized her condition remarkably.
Out on the expansive stone terrace overlooking Lake Michigan, a small, intimate gathering of close friends, federal magistrates who had helped clean up the city, and trusted security personnel celebrated an anniversary that no one had expected them to reach.
Willa stood near the edge of the balustrade, wearing a breathtaking floor-length evening gown of midnight silk embroidered with delicate silver thread.
The cheap secondhand dress of her past was nothing more than a distant memory, replaced by the quiet elegance of a woman who owned her destiny.
Footsteps approached softly from behind.
Strong, warm arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her back against a solid, familiar chest.
Everett rested his chin gently on her shoulder, his dark obsidian eyes reflecting the orange light of the setting sun over the water.
“One year,” Everett murmured softly against her ear.
“It feels like a lifetime ago,” Willa replied, leaning back into his embrace, her hands resting over his arms.
“A lifetime of war, poison, and resurrection.”
“And it all started because you refused to laugh at a comatose man,” Everett added with a quiet, deep chuckle.
“I told you back then,” Willa turned in his arms, looking up into his face with a radiant, loving smile.
“I don't kick people when they are down.”
“I pull them back up.”
Everett reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, heavy velvet box.
He opened it to reveal a second platinum band, identical to the one she had slipped onto his finger in the chapel, but this one was encrusted with a thin circle of flawless blue sapphires representing the lake where their new life began.
“We never had a proper honeymoon,” Everett whispered, his voice thick with emotion.
“And we never had a proper vow renewal without the guns, the poison, and the enemies watching from the pews.”
He slid the sapphire band onto her finger alongside her diamond ring.
“Will you marry me again, Willa Kane?”
“On our terms?”
Tears of pure happiness welled in Willa’s eyes.
She reached up, wrapping her arms around his neck, pulling him down until their lips met in a deep, passionate, and unwavering kiss.
“Yes,” Willa whispered against his lips.
“A thousand times yes.”
Around them, the lake breeze whispered through the trees, carrying away the ghosts of the past and welcoming an unbreakable, sovereign future.
