Chapter 8 - Shadows in the Penthouse

The silence inside Apartment 2304 was suffocating, broken only by the low hum of the police radio scanner on the dining table.

Chloe sat on the polished hardwood, trembling violently as her gaze darted between Elena and the imposing figure of Dante Russo.

"I had no choice, Elena!" Chloe cried, hot tears spilling down her foundation-caked cheeks.

"Vance’s security team came to my office yesterday morning!"

"They showed me photos of my mother’s house in Queens!"

"They told me if I didn't send them your location and hand over your social media account, they would burn her house down with her inside it!"

"You're lying," Elena said with cutting certainty, stepping past an open suitcase filled with stacks of hundred-dollar bills.

"If they threatened your family, you would have called me."

"You would have warned me."

"Instead, you bought two first-class tickets to Switzerland and packed four suitcases of cash."

Chloe looked down at the money, her excuses evaporating into pathetic silence.

"Where is the master ledger, Chloe?" Dante asked, his voice low, measured, and terrifyingly cold.

Chloe flinched, looking up at Dante’s towering frame.

"What ledger?" she whispered.

"Don't waste my time," Dante said, stepping closer until the shadow of his coat fell across her face.

"Charles Vance is a bureaucrat who keeps insurance on everyone."

"He keeps an encrypted flash drive containing the offshore wiring details, the payoffs to the judges, and the surveillance tapes of Detective Warren."

"He keeps a mirrored copy inside his campaign headquarters safe."

"You work as his chief administrative aide."

"You have the biometric passkey."

Chloe swallowed hard, her chest heaving with terror.

"If I give it to you, Vance will hunt me to the ends of the earth," she sobbed.

"If you don't give it to me," Dante said without raising his voice, "you won't live long enough to leave this zip code."

Chloe reached with trembling fingers beneath the collar of her silk blouse.

She pulled out a delicate platinum chain holding a miniature thumb drive shaped like an ornate key.

"It's here," Chloe whispered, unclipping the chain.

"The encryption key requires Vance’s secondary authorization code, but the raw video files of Marcus Cole are on that drive."

"It proves Cole was alive three days ago inside the campaign office."

Elena took the drive from Chloe’s hand, feeling the cold metal bite into her palm.

"Why did you do it, Chloe?" Elena asked, her voice cracking with raw, lingering grief.

"We were supposed to make it out together."

"I was tired of being poor, Elena!" Chloe screamed suddenly, her face twisting with bitter resentment.

"I was tired of counting pennies while you worked for billionaires!"

"I wanted what they had!"

"And now look at what you have," Elena said softly, looking around the cold, empty penthouse.

"A target on your back and an empty room."

Suddenly, the brass doorknob of the front entrance rattled violently.

A heavy metallic click echoed through the foyer as a master keycard bypassed the electronic deadbolt.

"Down!" Dante hissed, grabbing Elena by the collar and shoving her behind the marble kitchen island.

The front door burst inward with explosive violence.

Two flashbang grenades arched through the air, detonating in a blinding flash of white light and ear-shattering concussive thunder.

Elena covered her ears, her vision swimming in white spots as smoke filled the living room.

Gunfire erupted instantly.

Suppressed rounds shredded the leather sofas, sending goose feathers and drywall dust swirling into the air like snow.

Detective Warren stepped through the smoke, holding a submachine gun, flanked by two private security contractors in black tactical vests.

"Clean the room!" Warren yelled over the deafening noise.

"No witnesses!"

Chloe screamed from the center of the floor, crawling frantically toward the bedroom corridor.

Warren turned his weapon toward her without a second thought.

"Stupid girl," Warren snarled, leveling the barrel at the back of Chloe’s head.

"Warren, no!" Elena screamed, exposing herself from behind the island.

Warren’s eyes shifted instantly to Elena, a vicious smirk curling his lips.

"There you are, little maid," Warren said, swinging the submachine gun toward Elena’s chest.

Before Warren could pull the trigger, Chloe threw herself forward across the floor, grabbing Warren’s ankle with both hands.

"Run, Elena!" Chloe shrieked at the top of her lungs.

Warren cursed violently, stumbling back and firing a burst directly down into Chloe’s chest.

Chloe collapsed onto the carpet, a crimson stain spreading rapidly across her silk blouse.

Dante leaned around the marble island and fired three rapid shots from his .45 caliber pistol.

The heavy hollow-point rounds punched through the chest plate of the first contractor, dropping him instantly to the floor.

Mateo advanced from the terrace doorway, his weapon barking twice, neutralizing the second gunman with clinical precision.

Warren dove behind the reinforced concrete foyer wall, clutching his shoulder where a fragment of shattered drywall had lacerated his cheek.

"You're out of moves, Russo!" Warren shouted down the hallway, his voice strained and panicked.

"The entire precinct is five minutes away!"

"You're already dead, Warren!" Dante roared back, his voice echoing like rolling thunder through the ruined penthouse.

"You just haven't stopped breathing yet!"

Elena crawled through the smoke to Chloe’s side, ignoring the gunfire and the choking smell of cordite.

She pressed her hands against Chloe’s chest, trying desperately to stem the flow of dark, bubbling blood.

"Chloe... hang on... please, look at me," Elena begged, tears streaming down her soot-stained face.

Chloe looked up at Elena, her eyes already losing their light, her lips flecked with red foam.

"I’m sorry, El..." Chloe choked out, her fingers weakly brushing Elena’s wrist.

"I was... so stupid..."

"Don't talk, just breathe," Elena sobbed, pressing harder against the wound.

"The flash drive..." Chloe whispered, her voice fading to a frail breath.

"Vance’s campaign terminal... midnight server backup... destroys everything... at three... in the morning..."

Chloe’s hand slipped from Elena’s wrist, falling limp onto the blood-soaked carpet.

Her eyes stared blankly at the ceiling, unblinking and still.

Elena knelt beside her former friend, her body shaking with an overwhelming tide of grief, fury, and terror.

Dante stepped up beside her, his weapon lowered, his face grim as a graveyard tombstone.

He grabbed Elena’s arm, pulling her gently but firmly to her feet.

"She's gone, Elena," Dante said, his voice unusually gentle amidst the destruction.

"We have twenty minutes before the street is swarming with sirens."

"Did Warren get away?" Elena asked, wiping her bloody tears with the back of her sleeve.

"He took the emergency stairwell," Mateo reported, checking the corridor.

"He's heading toward the rail yards."

Elena looked down at the ornate flash drive clutched tightly in her palm, her grief crystallizing into diamond-hard resolve.

"He's not running to the police," Elena said, looking directly into Dante’s eyes.

"He's running to Charles Vance."

"Then let's make sure they die together," Dante replied.
