Chapter 14 - The Voice from the Crypt

The sound of tape hiss erupted through every speaker in the ballroom, amplified to a deafening volume that vibrated the crystal pendants of the chandeliers.
Then, the recorded argument from twenty years ago tore through the room:
"Hayes knows we copied the shipping manifest from Berth 4, Daniel!" Michael Romano’s recorded voice roared over the sound system.
"He staged the car fire on Route 9 to make the syndicate think the Valentis executed me!"
"He’s using Callahan to falsify the dental records right now!"
Gasps of horror and disbelief erupted from the crowd of journalists and public officials.
Reporters scrambled to activate their recording devices, pointing long-range shotgun microphones directly at the stage.
On the massive digital display screens above the podium, the black screen vanished, replaced by high-resolution scans of the documents from Locker 409.
Bank accounts held under the name 'Donald Vance' flashed before the audience, showing millions of dollars wired from overseas human trafficking cartels directly into Hayes’s offshore holdings.
Beside them appeared the signed medical confession of Dr. Patrick Callahan, complete with sworn notarization from the federal prosecutor’s office obtained two hours earlier.
Hayes’s composure shattered into violent hysteria.
"Shut it off!" Hayes roared, his face turning an ugly, mottled purple as he shoved the Mayor away from the lectern.
"Turn the power off! This is fabricated evidence created by mafia thugs!"
He reached inside his formal dress tunic, drawing his gold-plated service sidearm in full view of forty national television cameras.
"Nico Romano is an armed terrorist!" Hayes screamed, aiming the pistol directly at Nico’s head. "Take him down!"
Before Hayes could pull the trigger, a voice boomed from the shadows of the rear balcony, rich, thunderous, and carrying the authority of an emperor:
"Put the weapon down, Daniel!"
Every head in the room whipped toward the balcony staircase.
Michael Romano walked down the stairs into the brilliant spotlight of the stage, flanked by the Regional Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
He was alive.
He was standing before the city that had declared him dead two decades ago.
The ballroom dissolved into complete pandemonium.
Reporters were screaming questions, cameras were flashing in continuous, blinding bursts, and high-ranking politicians were scrambling toward the exits in terror.
Hayes’s hand began shaking violently, his gun wavering between Nico and the ghost of Michael Romano.
"You..." Hayes choked out, his voice cracking into a high-pitched whine.
"You died on Route 9... I saw the flames!"
"You saw the flames of your own cowardice, Daniel," Michael said, walking onto the stage with his hands resting calmly in his coat pockets.
"You thought that by killing an innocent vagrant and burning his corpse, you could bury your crimes forever."
"You thought that by hunting my family, you could erase the truth about the north terminal."
Hayes took two stumbling steps backward, his back hitting the mahogany wall behind the podium.
He looked wildly around the room, realizing that every camera in the state was broadcasting his unraveling live into two million living rooms.
In a desperate, psychotic bid for survival, Hayes turned his eyes toward Nico.
"Nico! Listen to me!" Hayes pleaded, his voice dripping with venomous desperation.
"You are my son! Do you hear me?!"
"You carry my blood! You are a Hayes!"
"These Italians used you as a shield! They made you a criminal to spit in my face!"
"Help me! We can take this city together! Blood is thicker than anything they ever gave you!"
Nico slowly stepped up the stairs of the dais, his dark eyes staring at the man who had biological claims to his flesh.
Nico stopped eighteen inches from Hayes’s trembling gun barrel.
He did not look at the weapon.
He looked directly into Hayes’s terrified, hollow eyes.
"You gave me your blood, Hayes," Nico said, his voice cold, steady, and carrying the finality of a judgment from heaven.
"And every day of my life, I will wash my hands to cleanse the stain of it."
"Michael Romano gave me honor."
"Michael Romano gave me a mother who loved me."
"Michael Romano took two bullets so that I wouldn't grow up to become the monster standing in front of me tonight."
Nico reached out with lightning speed, his bare hand clamping around the cylinder of Hayes’s pistol, wrenching the weapon from the captain’s grip and snapping his wrist with a sharp crack.
Hayes screamed in agony, falling to his knees on the polished floor.
Federal agents stormed the stage from both wings, tackling Hayes to the ground and forcing his arms behind his back with heavy steel cuffs.
The Regional Director stepped to the podium, leaning into the microphone:
"Daniel Hayes, you are under arrest for federal conspiracy, human trafficking, evidence tampering, and the attempted assassination of federal witnesses."
As they dragged Hayes down the stairs in front of the flashing cameras, he passed directly in front of Margaret Romano.
The blind woman stood motionless, her chin held high.
"I told you twenty years ago in Saint Jude's chapel, Captain," Margaret whispered as he was hauled past her.

"A mother never forgets the voice of the man who threatened her son."
"And tonight, the whole world has heard it."
