Chapter 11 - The Council of Wolves

The grand ballroom of the historic Moretti manor on Ridge Road was illuminated by crystal chandeliers that cast cold light over twenty-four men seated around an oval mahogany table.

These were the capos, underbosses, and financiers who controlled every illegal enterprise, commercial port, and municipal contract from Boston to Philadelphia.

At the head of the table sat Victor Moretti, wearing a tailored midnight-blue suit, his silver hair combed back with immaculate precision.

He held a crystal glass of bourbon in one hand, while a leather presentation binder lay open before him.

"Nicholas has lost his mind, gentlemen," Victor announced, his voice smooth, theatrical, and filled with manufactured sorrow.

"He discovered an old diner waitress who resembles his late mother, and the grief drove him into psychosis."

"Last night, he allied himself with Dominic Vale and launched an unprovoked assault on our logistics terminals."

"Four of our loyal men are dead."

"The Moretti and Vale assets are in immediate jeopardy of federal seizure unless we consolidate leadership under a single, stable command."

An elderly capo named Sal Falcone leaned forward, his heavy brow furrowed with skepticism.

"Nicholas is Antonio's only blood son, Victor."

"You don't strip a boss of his seat based on unverified allegations."

"Where is the proof that he allied with the Vales against our interests?"

Victor smiled thinly and gestured toward a large video screen mounted above the fireplace.

"The proof is in the financial transactions."

"Nicholas has been attempting to siphon thirty million dollars out of our operating accounts through Vale Athletic Holdings."

"I have the transfer logs right here—"

Before Victor could finish his sentence, the heavy double oak doors of the ballroom were blown off their hinges with a thunderous explosion.

Splinters of oak and white plaster smoke blasted across the polished mahogany table.

The elderly capos shouted in panic, reaching for concealed firearms beneath their silk suits.

Through the drifting white smoke stepped Nicholas Moretti, his black coat billowing around him, flanked by Dominic Vale and Marcus.

Nicholas did not draw a weapon.

He walked into the center of the grand ballroom with the measured, terrifying confidence of a king reclaiming his throne.

Behind them, two armed Vale operators pushed a trembling, white-haired man into the room.

Vincent Cross.

The entire table went dead silent.

Sal Falcone stood up, knocking his chair over, staring at Cross as if looking at a demon risen from the grave.

"Vincent?"

"Vincent Cross died twenty years ago in a car bombing!"

Nicholas stopped five feet from the head of the table, his cold gray eyes locked onto his uncle Victor.

"Vincent didn't die, Sal."

"My uncle Victor faked Vincent's death so he could keep an off-the-books accountant chained to a desk in the harbor."

"For twenty years, Victor has been looting our pension funds, our legitimate businesses, and our offshore reserves."

Victor’s face turned an ugly, mottled red, his composure beginning to unravel.

"This man is an imposter!"

"Shoot them!"

"Guards, kill them where they stand!"

Not a single guard moved.

Marcus and Dominic’s operators had already disarmed Victor’s personal security detail in the outer courtyard.

Dominic stepped forward, slamming Frank Dalton's ledger and the decrypted bank drives onto the mahogany table directly in front of Sal Falcone.

"Examine the routing numbers, Falcone."

"Every dollar stolen from the dockworkers' union thirty years ago was laundered through Vale Athletic Holdings."

"And every payment made to silence witnesses was signed by Victor Moretti."

Victor reached desperately inside his jacket for his revolver, but Nicholas moved with blinding speed.

He stepped forward, grabbed Victor’s wrist, and slammed his uncle’s hand down onto the mahogany table.

With a sickening crunch, the bone snapped under Nicholas’s grip.

Victor screamed in agony, dropping the chrome revolver onto the wood.

Nicholas leaned down until his mouth was two inches from his uncle’s ear.

"You had my mother chased out of her home like an animal."

"You made a seven-year-old boy stand in the rain and cry over an empty coffin filled with gravel."

"You thought that if you kept her hidden long enough, her memory would turn to dust."

Nicholas straightened his spine and looked toward the shattered ballroom entrance.

"Bring her in."

The double doors parted once more.

Walking into the room, flanked by Grace Carter and Robert Hale, was Laura Moretti.

She wore a simple, elegant black dress, her head held high, the silver olive-branch pendant resting proudly against her chest.

Every elderly capo at the table gasped in unison.

Sal Falcone crossed himself, his hand shaking violently.

"Laura... Holy Mother of God... it's Laura."

Laura stopped at the center of the room, looking at the men who had bowed to her husband thirty years ago.

"I am not a ghost, Sal."

"I am the woman Antonio Moretti banished to keep his throne."

"And Victor is the coward who tried to have me murdered three weeks ago when he realized I was still breathing."

The council capos looked at Victor with disgusted, unforgiving eyes.

In their world, violence and extortion were business.

Trapping a brother's wife, faking her death, and attempting to execute her after twenty-five years of silence violated the ancient code that held their syndicate together.

Sal Falcone looked at Nicholas and bowed his head respectfully.

"The Moretti seat belongs to Nicholas."

"What do you want done with Victor, Boss?"

Nicholas looked down at his groaning, broken uncle kneeling on the floor.

"Death is too quick for a man who stole twenty-five years of a mother's life."

May you like

"Turn him over to the federal prosecutor along with Vincent Cross's ledgers."

"Let him spend the rest of his miserable life inside a concrete cage, knowing that the woman he tried to bury is living in the sunlight."
