Chapter 10 - The Price of the Swallow

The flash of black metal beneath Marcus Moretti’s tuxedo jacket happened in a fraction of a second.
Marcus had lost his money, his name, and his freedom in the span of twelve hours.
There was nothing left inside his eyes except the rabid panic of a man who knew he would spend the rest of his life in a maximum-security cell.
“If I am going into the dark, Julianna’s bastard is coming with me!” Marcus shrieked, pulling a snub-nosed revolver from his holster.
Screams erupted throughout the grand atrium of the museum.
Guests threw themselves behind marble statues and overturned banquet tables.
Crystal glasses shattered across the polished floor as socialites trampled one another in a desperate stampede for the exits.
Elena saw the dark barrel of the revolver swing directly toward her chest.
Time seemed to slow into an agonizing, glacial crawl.
She could see Marcus’s finger whitening against the trigger.
She could see the wild, bloodshot madness in his eyes.
She could not move.
Her feet were rooted to the cold marble floor as twenty years of her mother's terror materialized into a piece of lead aimed at her heart.
Before Marcus could pull the trigger, a wall of dark wool slammed into her path.
Adrian threw himself between Elena and the weapon without a microsecond of hesitation.
The deafening crack of a gunshot ripped through the vaulted hall like thunder.
The muzzle flash illuminated the glass dome above.
Adrian’s body shuddered violently from the impact.
A sharp, wet gasp escaped his lips as he staggered backward, his heavy frame knocking Elena against the base of an Egyptian pedestal.
“Adrian!” Elena screamed, catching him by the lapels of his tuxedo as his knees gave out beneath him.
Marcus tried to cock the hammer a second time, his hands shaking violently.
“Die!” Marcus screamed.
Before he could level the barrel again, Dominic appeared from the side colonnade like a striking panther.
Dominic grabbed Marcus’s wrist, twisting it violently until bone snapped with a sickening crunch.
The revolver clattered across the bloodstained marble.
Dominic slammed Marcus face-first into the floor, driving his knee into the small of his back and locking steel handcuffs around his wrists with brutal efficiency.
“Federal agents! Drop your weapons!” a voice bellowed through a bullhorn as armed tactical teams flooded through every entrance.
Elena paid no attention to the police or the screaming crowd.
She dropped to her knees on the marble floor, cradling Adrian’s head and shoulders against her chest.
Dark, arterial blood was soaking through the front of his formal white shirt, pooling around the black silk of his waistcoat.
His skin was rapidly turning the color of wet chalk.
“Look at me!” Elena begged, pressing her bare hands against the wound in his chest to stem the torrent of crimson.
“Adrian, look at me!”
“Stay awake!”
The blood welled between her fingers, hot and slick, soaking into the fabric of her black gown.
Adrian’s breathing was shallow, wet, and labored.
His grey eyes fluttered, struggling to focus on her face through a haze of rising darkness.
His scarred right hand rose slowly, his fingers trembling as he touched the silver swallow pendant hanging against her throat.
The silver bird was spattered with his blood.
“Elena…” Adrian whispered, a faint, bloody smile touching his pale lips.
“You… you held the line.”
“Be quiet, do not speak!” Elena wept, tears streaming down her cheeks and dripping onto his face.
“Someone call an ambulance!” she screamed into the chaotic hall.
“Call a medical team right now!”
Dr. Samuel Vance dropped to his knees beside them, tearing off his own tuxedo jacket to press it against the sucking chest wound.
“The bullet punctured his left lung,” Samuel said, his voice tight with clinical horror.
“The thoracic pressure is dropping rapidly.”
“We need a trauma unit immediately!”
Adrian’s fingers gripped Elena’s wrist with surprising strength, pulling her ear down toward his lips.
His breath smelled of copper and rain.
“Listen to me, Elena,” Adrian whispered, his voice failing with every breath.
“Marcus… Marcus was only the hand.”
Elena froze, looking into his fading eyes.
“What do you mean?” she choked out.
“The second ledger…” Adrian whispered, blood bubbling at the corner of his mouth.
“The man… the man who bought the explosives twenty years ago…”
“It wasn't Sterling.”
“It was…”
Adrian’s eyes rolled back into his head.
His grip on Elena’s wrist went completely slack, his heavy arm falling limply onto the red-stained marble.
His chest stopped rising.
“Adrian!” Elena screamed, her voice cracking into a ragged, broken sob that tore through the silent atrium.
“Adrian, breathe!”
Paramedics in black tactical gear pushed through the crowd, carrying a trauma stretcher and defibrillator packs.
“Clear the floor! Let the medics through!” Dominic shouted, holding back the remaining onlookers.
Elena was pulled backward by the medical officers as they began chest compressions on the fallen titan of the Moretti family.
She stood amidst the flashing red and blue emergency lights, her hands covered in her uncle’s blood.
She looked at Marcus being dragged away in chains, his face twisted in a demented smirk.
She looked at Arthur Sterling being pinned against a marble column by federal marshals.
And then she looked down at the silver swallow resting against her chest.
Her uncle had sacrificed his life to place her on the throne of an empire.
And the true monster who had destroyed her mother was still walking free in the shadows.
Elena closed her bloody fingers around the silver pendant, her tears turning into an absolute, terrifying calm.
The maid was truly dead.
The head of the Moretti family was born.CHAPTER 11 — The Razor's Edge
The flashing red beacons of four emergency vehicles painted the granite columns of the Metropolitan Museum in rhythmic pulses of blood and shadow.
The wail of sirens pierced the damp night air as the motorcade tore through the empty avenues toward St. Jude’s Trauma Center.
Inside the back of the lead ambulance, Elena knelt on the rubberized floor, her knees soaked in Adrian’s blood.
Two paramedics worked with frantic, mechanical precision above his bare chest.
They had cut away his silk shirt and applied pressure seals across the entrance wound beneath his left clavicle.
The portable cardiac monitor beeped with a frantic, irregular frequency that made Elena’s stomach clench into a knot of cold stone.
“Systolic pressure is dropping through sixty,” the lead paramedic shouted over the roar of the diesel engine.
“Thoracic suction is failing, we have blood entering the pleural cavity!”
“Push two milligrams of epinephrine and prep the portable defibrillator!”
Elena gripped Adrian’s cold, lifeless left hand between both of hers.
His skin felt like wet parchment.
His pulse beneath her thumb was nothing more than a faint, fluttering vibration that threatened to vanish with every passing block.
“Do not die,” Elena whispered into the din of the sirens, her voice harsh and cracked.
“You survived twenty-two years of guilt.”
“You do not get to leave me alone in this viper’s nest tonight.”
Adrian did not stir.
His face remained as pale as carved tombstone marble, his dark eyelashes motionless against his hollow cheeks.
The ambulance took a violent left turn into the underground bay of the trauma center.
The rear double doors were thrown open into the glaring fluorescent light of the emergency ward.
A team of six trauma surgeons and surgical nurses swarmed the gurney the moment it hit the concrete apron.
“Adrian Moretti, thirty-two, single gunshot wound to the upper left thorax,” the paramedic rattled off as they sprinted through the double automated doors.
“Severe internal hemorrhaging, tension hemothorax, heart rate one hundred forty and thread-like.”
Elena ran alongside the rolling gurney, refusing to let go of Adrian’s fingers.
Her black evening gown was ripped at the hem and soaked in crimson across the bodice.
Her face was smeared with dust and dried blood.
A tall security guard stepped into her path at the threshold of the surgical corridor.
“Ma'am, you cannot enter the sterile field!” the guard shouted, bracing his hands against her shoulders.
“Get your hands off her,” Dominic’s voice boomed from behind.
Dominic stepped forward, flashing a high-level federal protective detail badge directly into the guard’s face.
“She is the sole legal representative and next of kin,” Dominic growled.
“She stays in the private surgical observation bay.”
The guard stepped back immediately, bowing his head in deference.
Elena watched through the thick observation window as the surgical team transferred Adrian onto the metal operating table.
Within seconds, the room became a storm of stainless steel trays, plastic suction tubes, and monitors screaming in high-pitched warning tones.
The chief surgeon shouted for four units of O-negative blood.
Elena stood with her forehead pressed against the cold glass, her breath fogging the surface.
Dominic stood two paces behind her, his tactical jacket still smelling of burnt cordite.
“He took that round for me,” Elena said, her voice dropping into a flat, terrifying monotone.
“He has lived with Julianna’s ghost for over two decades, Miss Moretti,” Dominic said softly.
“He would have taken ten bullets before letting Marcus touch a single hair on your head.”
Elena slowly turned around to face the head of security.
Her amber eyes were wide, clear, and completely stripped of fear.
“Before Adrian lost consciousness, he pulled me down to his lips,” Elena stated.
Dominic’s posture stiffened.
“What did he say?”
“He said Marcus was only the hand,” Elena whispered.
“He said the man who bought the military-grade explosives twenty years ago was not Arthur Sterling.”
“He said there was a second ledger.”
Dominic’s breath hitched in his throat.
His weathered hands clenched into tight fists at his sides.
“A second ledger…” Dominic murmured, his eyes darting toward the corridor.
“Julianna’s personal attorney kept the secondary trust manifests before the yacht was destroyed.”
“He was the only man outside the immediate bloodline who knew the coordinates of her private voyage that night.”
Elena stepped closer to Dominic, her gaze piercing through him.
“Who was he, Dominic?”
“Dr. Samuel Vance’s older brother, Judge Lawrence Vance,” Dominic replied, his voice dropping into a conspiratorial whisper.
“The executor of the original family estate.”
“And Dr. Samuel Vance was the one who signed Julianna’s fraudulent death certificate without an autopsy forty-eight hours after the blast.”
Elena’s heart stopped.
The memory of Dr. Vance standing inside Adrian’s study with his crooked bow tie and clinical valise flashed across her mind.
He had volunteered to run the DNA sequencing in the estate basement.
He had volunteered to manage the trauma triage on the museum floor.
“Where is Samuel Vance right now?” Elena demanded, a bolt of pure ice coursing through her veins.
Dominic turned his head toward the central surgical control desk across the hallway.
“He told the chief of surgery he was scrubbing in to assist on the vascular repair.”
Elena did not wait for another breath.
She tore across the hallway, her bloodstained silk gown trailing behind her like a battle flag.

“He is not there to save Adrian,” Elena screamed.
“He is going into that operating theater to make sure Adrian never wakes up!”
