Chapter 12 - The Blood We Never Chose

The words hung in the sterile air of the bunker like poisonous gas.
Sarah stared at her father, unable to comprehend the sound of her own voice.
“His sister?”
“Her maiden name was Reed,” Thomas said, his voice flat with twenty-five years of buried grief.
“When I met her at the naval base in nineteen ninety-six, she had already cut all ties with Marcus.”
“She despised the family business.”
“She hated the corrupt political dynasty her father and brother had constructed out of harbor graft and cartel money.”
“She changed her legal name to Bennett when we married and refused to accept a single penny from the family trusts.”
Sarah stepped toward the terminal, staring at the scanned authorization order on the glass.
“Then why is her signature on an order to have you murdered?”
Thomas reached out, his rough thumb touching the bottom of the monitor.
“Because three weeks before the fire, Marcus discovered that I was copying the manifests into the black binder.”
“He went to Margaret’s classroom at the high school while you were in daycare.”
“He brought photos of you sleeping in your crib, Julianne.”
“He told her that if she didn't sign the corporate authorization clearing the warehouse security personnel to eliminate me as an industrial saboteur, he would have you placed in an unlicensed foster facility overseas where she would never find you.”
Sarah felt her knees buckle.
She grabbed the back of the desk chair to stay upright.
“She signed it to save me?”
“She signed the paper because Marcus gave her a twenty-four-hour deadline,” Thomas said, looking directly into his daughter’s eyes.
“And then she immediately drove straight to the freight yard in the middle of the night and told me everything.”
“She fell on the floor of my office, weeping until her voice was gone, begging me to kill her for what she had done.”
Thomas’s voice broke slightly, the memory searing through his iron composure.
“She chose us over her own blood, Julianne.”
“She gave me the key to Marcus’s private yard safe.”
“She agreed to help me stage my own death so Marcus would believe his sister had surrendered to his control.”
“For twenty-five years, she played the broken, penniless widow living in that drafty house, taking Marcus’s insulting monthly charity checks just to keep his suspicion away from you.”
“She endured the guilt of letting the world believe she was a victim, when in truth she was our shield.”
Sarah looked back at the screen.
The progress bar for the federal upload chimed with a clear digital chime.
UPLOAD COMPLETE: 100%.
CONFIRMATION RECEIPT LOGGED: US ATTORNEY’S OFFICE — DISTRICT OF MASSACHUSETTS.
The entire financial infrastructure of the Reed family dynasty was now in the hands of federal prosecutors.
Before Sarah could take a breath of relief, the overhead lights in the bunker flickered violently.
A loud mechanical clank echoed down the concrete stairwell from the surface.
The heavy steel hatch at the top of the stairs slammed shut.
Then, through the intercom speaker mounted above the server racks, a familiar, smooth voice purred with leisurely amusement.
“Family reunions are always so terribly sentimental, aren't they, Tommy?”
Marcus Reed was watching them through the bunker’s internal surveillance cameras.
Sarah looked up at the corner of the ceiling.
A tiny dome camera was rotating smoothly, its red indicator light locked directly on her face.
“Marcus,” Thomas said, his voice dropping into an icy register.
“I must confess, Tommy, you were always remarkably clever with mechanical locks,” Marcus’s voice echoed through the speaker.
“But you never quite understood the difference between military tactics and political power.”
“Did you really believe the United States Attorney’s office in Boston was going to open an investigation based on an anonymous digital dump from an unregistered port terminal?”
A faint, chilling laugh crackled through the intercom.
“The regional US Attorney was appointed to his seat on my personal recommendation to the governor three years ago.”
“Your little data packet didn't land in an evidence locker, Tommy.”
“It landed directly on my private tablet in the back of my town car.”
Sarah felt the cold grip of absolute dread tighten around her heart.
They were sealed inside a concrete vault twenty feet below ground.

The exits were locked from above.
And the man who owned the city was holding the controls.
