Chapter 11 - The Federal Crucible

The morning sun broke through the autumn clouds over the downtown federal district.

The United States Courthouse was an imposing fortress of gray granite and towering fluted columns.

Dozens of camera crews and print journalists crowded the granite plaza behind yellow barricade tape.

Flashbulbs popped in blinding bursts every time a black government sedan pulled up to the curb.

Victor sat in the rear seat of his armored town car parked across the boulevard beneath the maple trees.

He adjusted his sunglasses, watching the courtroom steps through the heavily tinted glass.

Beside him, Luca monitored three encrypted radio frequencies tied to the municipal police band.

At precisely eight-thirty, an armored federal transport van pulled into the sunken subterranean sally port.

Two marshals emerged first, their hands resting on their tactical sidearms as they cleared the perimeter.

Then came Judge Harrison Vance, handcuffed to a chain wrapped tightly around his waist.

The once-untouchable appellate judge was wearing an orange prison jumpsuit beneath a faded navy blazer.

His silver hair was uncombed, his aristocratic chin sunken against his chest in complete humiliation.

The photographers shouted his name, pressing their long lenses against the chain-link security gate.

Moments later, a second transport door swung open, and Audrey was escorted down the steel steps.

Her high-society poise had disintegrated entirely over forty-eight hours in county holding.

Her designer makeup was gone, revealing dark, hollow circles beneath her swollen, bloodshot eyes.

She pulled her shoulders inward, trying to hide her face from the cameras as the marshals led her forward.

"The plea negotiations collapsed thirty minutes ago, boss," Luca said, lowering his audio headset.

"Her defense attorney tried to float a diminished capacity argument based on severe caregiver stress."

"The U.S. Attorney laughed him right out of the private conference room."

"Why?" Victor asked, his voice steady and calm.

"Because Dr. Julian Vance gave them the handwritten compounding orders from his clinic safe," Luca explained.

"Audrey paid him fifty thousand dollars in cash drawn from her personal boutique account to formulate the poison."

"And Arthur Vance finished his sworn deposition five minutes ago inside the third-floor grand jury chamber."

"He handed over the offshore shell registrations linking the judge to Salvatore Moretti’s waterfront dummy corporation."

Victor watched as the heavy iron security gate rolled shut, swallowing the Vance family into the bowels of the courthouse.

The law that Harrison Vance had twisted for thirty years had finally turned into a cage around his own neck.

"What about our dock contracts, Luca?" Victor asked, turning his gaze toward the driver’s mirror.

"The city council met in an emergency closed-door session at seven o'clock this morning," Luca replied.

"With Judge Vance off the municipal bench, the emergency injunction against our port leases was dissolved immediately."

"The port director signed the twenty-year commercial renewal without a single objection."

"And Salvatore Moretti?"

"His cruiser crossed the harbor limits at midnight sharp," Luca said with a grim smile.

"Two of our spotters followed his boat until it entered New Jersey territorial waters."

"He cleared his bank balances from the local commercial branches before dawn."

"The Moretti family won't touch this waterfront for another generation, Victor."

Victor tapped his knuckles against the leather armrest, watching the crowd of reporters disperse across the plaza.

The victory was complete, surgical, and devastating to his enemies.

Yet, as he looked at the cold granite facade of the justice building, he felt no sudden wave of exhilaration.

He only felt the lingering, chilling memory of his mother gasping for water while Audrey smiled down at the floor.

"Let’s go home, Luca," Victor said quietly.

"There is still a lot of cleaning to do inside those walls."
