Chapter 6 - The Ambush

The armored SUV sped out of the underground garage.
Dante was behind the wheel.
Camryn sat in the back, holding Leo tightly against her chest. The little boy was fast asleep, blissfully unaware of the danger surrounding them.
"Are we safe, Dante?" Camryn asked nervously.
Dante checked his rearview mirror. "Boss built this car to withstand C4 explosives, Miss Jenkins. Nobody is getting through these doors."
But Silas wasn't trying to get through the doors.
As they crossed the Manhattan Bridge, a massive garbage truck swerved across three lanes of traffic.
It didn't brake.
It slammed directly into the side of the SUV.
The impact was catastrophic.
Metal shrieked. Glass spider-webbed.
The SUV spun violently, crashing into the concrete barrier.
Airbags deployed with a deafening crack.
Camryn tasted blood. Her head throbbed.
But her arms were still locked around Leo.
The little boy woke up, screaming in terror.
"Shh, baby, I've got you," Camryn coughed through the smoke.
"Miss Jenkins!" Dante yelled from the front. He was bleeding from a gash on his forehead, but his gun was already drawn. "Get down on the floor! Now!"
Outside, three black sedans screeched to a halt around them.
Men in tactical gear poured out, carrying automatic rifles.
It wasn't a warning. It was an execution.
Gunfire erupted, raining down on the SUV. The bulletproof glass held, but spider-webbed further with every hit. It was only a matter of time before it shattered.
"Call Matteo!" Camryn screamed over the gunfire.
"Signal is jammed!" Dante cursed, firing back through a gun port in the door, dropping two of the attackers.
They were trapped.
Silas had anticipated the safehouse protocol.
He had planned a slaughter on the bridge.
"Dante, they have heavy weapons!" Camryn cried, seeing a man pull a rocket launcher from the trunk of a sedan.
Dante looked back at her, his eyes grim.
"Miss Jenkins," Dante said softly. "When I open this door, they're going to focus their fire on me. You take the boy and run back toward the police barricades. Do not look back."
"No!" Camryn sobbed. "You'll die!"
"My life belongs to the DeLuca family," Dante smiled fiercely. "Protect the boy."
Dante kicked his door open.
But before he could step out, the deafening roar of a helicopter engine rattled their teeth.
Camryn looked up through the shattered sunroof.
A sleek, black helicopter swooped low over the bridge.
The side door slid open.
A man stood in the doorway, a high-powered sniper rifle braced against his shoulder.
It was Matteo.
His face was a mask of pure, lethal fury.
He didn't hesitate.
Bang. Bang. Bang.
The man with the rocket launcher dropped dead.

The men surrounding the SUV began to fall, one by one, with terrifying precision.
Matteo DeLuca had brought hell to the Manhattan Bridge.
