Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Intensive Care Unit

The emergency intervention in Operating Room Six was a bloody, high-stakes battle against time and biology.

For ninety harrowing minutes, my surgical team fought to stabilize Chloe's massive uterine hemorrhage while the obstetric specialists managed the severe placental abruption.

Through surgical precision, rapid transfusions, and sheer willpower, we arrested the bleeding and restored the fetal heartbeat to a steady, rhythmic one hundred and forty beats per minute.

The baby was still safe inside her womb, protected against the sudden storm that had nearly claimed both of their lives.

At four o'clock in the morning, Chloe was transferred to the high-dependency maternal care unit under twenty-four-hour cardiac monitoring.

I walked into her dimly lit room, still wearing my sanitized paper scrubs.

Chloe lay beneath the white hospital blankets, her skin translucent, an IV line dripping magnesium into her arm to prevent seizures.

When she saw me enter, tears instantly welled in the corners of her eyes and spilled down her hollow cheeks.

"You saved him," she whispered, her voice cracked and fragile.

"You could have let him die, and no one in the world would have blamed you."

"Why did you do it?"

I pulled a metal stool beside her bed and sat down, leaning my elbows on my knees.

"Because I took an oath to preserve human life, Chloe," I said quietly, the exhaustion finally weighing down my shoulders.

"And because an innocent unborn child bears no guilt for the sins of his father."

Chloe looked down at her hands, picking weakly at the hospital blanket.

"He isn't what you think he is," Chloe murmured, her voice barely audible over the hum of the monitors.

"Who isn't? Ethan?" I asked, my voice edged with cold skepticism.

"He came to me six months ago when my world was burning down," Chloe explained, her gaze distant and haunted.

"He found me hiding in a run-down motel outside of Milwaukee after my apartment was ransacked."

"He paid off all my debts, put me into protective custody, and bought the house in Lake Forest."

"He told me that as long as I stayed inside that house, no one from Chicago’s old families could touch me."

I frowned, narrowing my eyes as the inconsistencies in her story began to prickle at my intuition.

"And the engagement ring around your neck?" I asked. "The promises of marriage?"

Chloe’s cheeks flushed with a faint, embarrassed color.

"He gave me the ring for legal immunity," she confessed, her voice trembling.

"He said that under the Blackwood syndicate's internal charter, an engaged or married woman carrying the bloodline is untouchable by the council of bosses."

"He said he had to claim paternity on the legal documents so his uncle's assassins wouldn't execute me in the streets."

The air in the hospital room suddenly felt freezing cold.

"What did you just say?" I asked, rising slowly from the stool.

"He claimed paternity?"

Before Chloe could explain her words, my pocket pager buzzed violently against my hip.

The digital display flashed red: "ICU Bed 1—Blackwood, Ethan. Consciousness regained. Patient agitated."

My heart leaped into my throat.

Ethan was awake.

I left Chloe’s room without another word, my sneakers squeaking against the polished floor as I took the private elevator back to the ninth-floor intensive care unit.

Two armed Blackwood guards stood outside Ethan's room, stepping aside instantly as I pushed open the glass slider.

The ICU room smelled of antiseptic, iodine, and clean linens.

Ethan lay propped up on the mechanical bed, his chest bound tightly in surgical bandages, monitors tracing his recovering heart rhythm.

His left eye was swollen shut, but his right eye—dark, intense, and piercing gray—flickered open as the door hissed shut behind me.

When his gaze landed on my face, a violent spasm ran through his battered frame.

His hand twitched against the bed rails, trying to reach for me.

"Claire..." he rasped, his voice raw and destroyed by the ventilator tube that had only been removed an hour ago.

I stood at the foot of his bed, refusing to step any closer.

I folded my arms across my chest, staring at him with cold, clinical detachment.

"Save your strength, Mr. Blackwood," I said, my voice steady and hollow.

"You have seven fractured ribs, an external fixator holding your femur together, and a pulmonary repair that will tear open if you exert yourself."

Tears of raw, unfiltered agony pooled in Ethan’s gray eyes.

"Claire... please... listen to me..." he choked out, struggling against the heavy sedation in his veins.

"You shouldn't be here... they know... Victor knows where I am..."

"I don't care about Victor!" I snapped, the wall of professional composure finally shattering into jagged shards of rage.

"I spent four hours holding your bleeding aorta in my hands tonight, Ethan!"

"And then I spent another two hours saving your pregnant mistress and your unborn son from bleeding to death in the lobby!"

Ethan’s single open eye widened in absolute horror.

"Chloe?" he whispered, his heart monitor beeping faster with escalating panic.

"Is she... is the baby alive?"

"Yes!" I yelled, stepping toward the side of the bed, tears burning hot against my cheeks.

"The baby is alive because your lawful wife refused to let him die!"

"Now tell me, Ethan! Tell me to my face who that child belongs to before I walk out of this hospital and never look at you again!"

Ethan reached out with agonizing slowness, his bruised fingers brushing against the hem of my scrub top.

"Claire... forgive me..." he whispered, his breath hitching in his battered chest.

"The baby... isn't mine."

Before I could process the shock of his confession, the heavy glass doors of the ICU suite were violently shoved open from the hallway.

A tall, silver-haired man in a bespoke three-piece charcoal suit strode into the room, followed by six armed private security contractors in tactical gear.

It was Victor Blackwood.

His cold, serpentine eyes swept the room, taking in Ethan's broken form before landing upon me with venomous amusement.

"What a touching family reunion," Victor sneered, tapping an ornate silver cane against the linoleum floor.

"Dr. Claire Blackwood, you have performed admirably as a surgeon."

"However, your services are no longer required."

Victor snapped his fingers, and his armed men stepped forward to encircle Ethan's hospital bed.

"As the chairman of the Blackwood Family Trust, I am exercising emergency executive guardianship over Ethan."

"And I am taking the mother of the Blackwood heir into our private compound immediately."
