Chapter 8 - The Parquet Court

The heavy mahogany bookshelf swung outward into the library, scattering antique leather-bound volumes across the polished parquet floor.
Megan emerged low and fast, her service weapon raised and locked in a two-handed combat grip.
"State Police! Drop the weapon!"
The man in the tailored navy suit didn't drop anything.
His reflexes were those of a trained private military contractor; his hand swept inside his jacket in a fluid, practiced draw.
Before his muzzle could clear his lapel, Megan fired two controlled rounds into his center mass.
The heavy 9mm hollow points punched through the contractor's torso, lifting him off his feet and throwing him backward across the mahogany desk.
The aluminum briefcases tipped over, sending hundred-dollar bills fluttering through the air like green confetti.
The contractor slammed into the floorboards behind the desk and did not move again.
Daniel Marino jumped out of the leather wingback chair with a high-pitched, pathetic shriek, dropping his crystal tumbler onto the rug.
The expensive single-malt scotch soaked into the antique wool as Daniel scrambled backward toward the grand double doors.
"Don't move, Daniel," a voice boomed from the secret passageway.
Daniel froze, his hand trembling inches from the brass doorknob.
Nico stepped through the opening into the library, his face smeared with grease, his eyes burning with an ancient, murderous fury.
Behind him, supporting himself against the bookshelf, walked Victor Marino.
Daniel’s complexion drained of all color, turning a sickening, curdled gray.
"F-Father?" Daniel stammered, his knees visibly shaking beneath his tailored trousers.
"Nico?"
"You... you were supposed to be at the medical perimeter."
"The reports said you were abducted by a rogue tactical unit."
Victor stepped forward slowly, the brass cane he had taken back from Nico tapping rhythmically against the blood-splattered parquet floor.
"The reports were written by Aaron Blake, weren't they, Daniel?" Victor said, each word dropping like a lead weight.
"The same man you paid to sign off on Julian’s vehicular inspection seven years ago."
Daniel backed away from the doors, his hands held up in a desperate, pleading gesture.
"No! Father, listen to me!"
"You don't understand the pressure they put on us!"
"The State Consortium had our offshore routing numbers!"
"They were going to freeze every account, revoke every municipal license, and seize the properties under the RICO statutes!"
"Sentinel came to me with a solution!"
"A corporate restructuring!"
"We hand over the transit corridors, we take a thirty percent equity share in their logistics network, and we walk away completely clean!"
Nico closed the distance between them with two terrifying strides, grabbing his uncle by the silk lapels of his three-piece suit.
He slammed Daniel against the heavy oak paneling of the wall with enough force to rattle the portraits hanging above them.
"Where was my father’s share in that restructuring, Daniel?" Nico snarled, his face inches from his uncle’s sweating features.
"Did my father agree to hand over the family name to a board of corrupt city councilmen?"
"Julian was stubborn!" Daniel sobbed, tears cutting through the sweat on his cheeks.
"Julian thought we could keep fighting them with cash and muscle like it was nineteen eighty-four!"
"The world changed, Nico!"
"The politicians don't want envelopes of cash anymore!"
"They want private equity, they want corporate security franchises, they want clean balance sheets!"
"Julian found the contracts in the city comptroller’s office!"
"He was going to the federal prosecutor!"
"He was going to destroy the entire family just to keep his own conscience clean!"
Megan stepped toward the desk, keeping her weapon pointed at the library doors while listening to the confession.
"And Blake?" Megan demanded, her voice cutting through Daniel’s hysterical babbling.
"Why did Blake help you murder Julian Marino?"
Daniel looked at Megan, his eyes widening as he recognized her face beneath the soot and rain.
"Megan... the little maid..." he breathed, his voice cracking.
"Blake didn't work for me, Detective."
"Blake works for the Consortium."
"Julian thought Blake was his private protector in the department."
"Julian gave Blake the master encryption key seven years ago, thinking Blake would deliver it to the Justice Department."
"Instead, Blake brought the key straight to Sentinel's board room."
"They paid him two million dollars in municipal bond credits to cut the steering hydraulic line on Julian's sedan that night."
Megan felt a wave of cold nausea sweep through her gut.
Aaron Blake, the man who had pinned her badge to her uniform on graduation day, had been an executioner for hire for nearly a decade.
Every piece of advice he had given her, every operation he had overseen, had been designed to protect the very network she was hunting.
"Where is the master ledger now, Daniel?" Victor asked, his voice dead and emotionless.
Daniel pointed a shaking finger downward toward the floorboards beneath their feet.
"It’s in the subterranean vault, Father."
"I couldn't open it!"
"Julian keyed the vault to a biometric sequence and a dual-key mechanism that requires the founder’s seal."
"I spent seven years trying to drill that steel plate without triggering the thermal incendiary charges."
"Sentinel brought an industrial laser team tonight."
"They’re staging in the courtyard right now to cut through the vault door before the morning news cycle."
A sharp knock echoed through the library doors, followed by the metallic click of a radio transceiver.
"Director Daniel, report," a heavily filtered voice called out from the hallway.
"We heard two unsuppressed discharges from the study."
"Confirm status immediately, or we breach the perimeter."
Nico tightened his grip on Daniel’s throat, pressing the muzzle of the dead contractor's dropped weapon against his uncle’s temple.
"Answer them, Daniel," Nico whispered, his voice dark and merciless.

"Tell them everything is fine."
"Or I will let my grandfather decide how you spend your last thirty seconds on this earth."
