Chapter 8 - Queen of the Chicago Underworld

Six months later, the skyline of Chicago looked very different from the top floor of the new Moretti Tower rising along the Magnificent Mile.
The floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a panoramic view of the lake Michigan shoreline, glittering under the autumn sun. Gone were the cheap uniforms, the greasy aprons, the aching feet, and the screaming radiators of Cicero.
Evelyn Carter wore a tailored charcoal-gray Armani pantsuit, her hair pulled back into a sleek, professional knot. On her desk sat a custom brass fountain pen—and a single, framed cocktail napkin preserved beneath museum-grade glass.
The transition hadn't been easy. The old-guard capos had tested her during her first month, thinking a former diner waitress would fold under the pressure of syndicate finances.
They had learned their lesson the hard way when Evelyn traced three million dollars in embezzled cartel funds through off-shore shell companies, identified the traitor within forty-eight hours, and presented Lorenzo with a spreadsheet so devastating he personally threw the traitor off a loading dock.
Now, when Evelyn walked through the offices, men twice her age stepped aside and nodded with genuine respect. She wasn't just Lorenzo Moretti’s most trusted advisor anymore; she was the architect of the syndicate's entire legitimate financial empire, turning street cash into clean, untouchable corporate wealth.
And Lorenzo?
He remained what he had always been: the apex predator of the city. But the coldness in his eyes had softened whenever she walked into the room. They were two broken pieces of Chicago’s underworld, forged in the fires of betrayal, now holding the entire city in the palms of their hands.
Yet, peace in the mob never lasted long.
The phone on her desk buzzed. A secure, encrypted line flashing red.
Evelyn picked up the receiver. “Carter.”
“Miss Carter,” a shaky, frantic voice echoed through the speaker—a voice she hadn’t heard since the night her father abandoned her to the wolves. “Evelyn... baby, please. You have to help me. They’re coming for me...”
May you like
Evelyn’s breath hitched. Her hand tightened around the brass pen until her knuckles turned white.
Arthur Carter wasn't dead. He had been hiding in plain sight all along.
