Chapter 10 - The Dinner of Vipers

The federal courtroom on the fourth floor of the Dirksen Federal Building was packed to the point of suffocation.
Journalists, federal agents, and curious spectators crowded into the oak-paneled gallery, whispering anxiously among themselves as they waited for the proceedings to begin.
At the center mahogany bench sat Judge Harrison Brooks, a towering, silver-haired man with heavy jowls and an expression of supreme, unshakeable arrogance.
He adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, looking down at the legal briefs stacked neatly before him.
"The court is now in session," the bailust shouted loudly, striking his gavel against the wooden block.
"All rise for the Honorable Judge Harrison Brooks."
Judge Brooks seated himself slowly, casting a cold, disdainful glance toward the defense table where Lorenzo Moretti sat flanked by two attorneys.
Julian Vane was absent, still locked away in the Cicero warehouse, his empire crumbling into dust while his political allies scrambled to distance themselves from the wreckage.
"Before we proceed with the federal asset forfeiture motions filed against the Moretti estate," Judge Brooks began, his deep, resonant voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling, "the court wishes to address the persistent rumors regarding unauthorized leaks from this bench."
"Let the record show that this court operates with absolute integrity—"
The heavy oak doors at the back of the courtroom swung open with a sharp, echoing slam.
Every head in the gallery turned as a column of four armed federal marshals marched down the center aisle, their badges gleaming beneath the fluorescent lights.
Walking directly behind them, dressed in a sharp, tailored charcoal suit that commanded the entire room, was Evelyn Vance.
Her dark hair was pulled back into a sleek, professional chignon, and her chin was held high with the unwavering grace of a queen reclaiming her throne.
Judge Brooks stopped speaking mid-sentence, his face turning a sickly, mottled shade of grey as his eyes locked onto Evelyn’s face.
He recognized the eyes instantly.
They were the exact same eyes as the auditor he had ordered eliminated five years ago.
"Bailiff," Judge Brooks barked, his voice cracking slightly as he pointed a trembling finger toward the aisle.
"Remove those unauthorized persons from the courtroom immediately."
"There is no unauthorized person here, Your Honor," a clear, authoritative voice rang out from the back of the gallery.
Special Agent in Charge Vance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation stepped forward, holding a thick blue folder stamped with Department of Justice seals.
"Federal Marshals, place Judge Harrison Brooks under arrest for federal corruption, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy to commit murder."
Chaos erupted in the courtroom.
Spectators gasped, reporters stood up on their benches to snap photographs, and two junior prosecutors dropped their legal pads in absolute shock.
"This is an outrage!" Judge Brooks roared, slamming his gavel onto the wood so hard the handle splintered in his hand.
"I am a federal magistrate! You have no jurisdiction over this bench!"
"We have complete jurisdiction, Harrison," Lorenzo Moretti said smoothly as he stood up from the defense table, buttoning his suit jacket.
He walked down the center aisle, stopping right beside Evelyn at the foot of the judge’s dais.
Agent Vance stepped up onto the raised platform, slapped steel handcuffs onto the judge's wrists, and hauled him to his feet.

As the federal marshals dragged the screaming judge away toward the holding cells, Evelyn reached into her leather briefcase.
She pulled out an analog cassette tape and placed it gently on the center of the judge’s mahogany desk, right where the gavel had just splintered.
