Chapter 8 - The Traitor’s Sanctuary

Samuel Ward did not raise a weapon.
He kept his gloved hands visible at his sides, letting the freezing rain soak into his silver hair.
Behind him, the cemetery was utterly silent, save for the wind whistling through the bare branches.
Marcus immediately stepped between Adrian and the entrance, his laser sight centered on Ward's chest.
"Take one more step and I’ll put two rounds through your throat, Samuel," Marcus growled.
Ward didn't flinch; his weathered face looked tired, carved with deep lines of exhaustion and regret.
"If I wanted you dead, Marcus, I would have triggered the shaped charge wired beneath that stone slab."
Adrian pushed past Marcus, his pistol never wavering from Ward’s left eye.
"You stood by that ditch and watched my father put a bullet into Luca’s chest."
"I watched," Ward admitted, his voice rough as gravel.
"And I have spent every waking minute of the last eight years choking on that memory."
"Why did you send the dashcam to my office today?" Adrian demanded.
"Because your father is preparing to finish what he started."
Ethan Cole stepped out from behind the marble pillars, his eyes burning with fury.
"You threatened my daughter, you son of a bitch."
"You told me you'd slaughter my family if I ever mentioned Luca's name again."
Ward looked toward Ethan, and for a fraction of a second, his hard gaze softened with shame.
"I gave you ten thousand dollars to run across the state line, Cole."
"I did that because Arthur had ordered two ex-military contractors to burn your house with you inside."
"I gave you a chance to disappear because I knew Arthur would murder a witness without blinking."
Adrian lowered his weapon by half an inch, his jaw locked tight.
"Why did my father kill Luca?"
"Luca wasn't just auditing accounts, Adrian," Ward said, stepping under the stone archway out of the sleet.
"Luca found the Cayman wire transfers connected to the North Atlantic Shipping syndicate."
"Your father wasn't just moving corporate profits to avoid federal taxes."
"He was financing a private logistics network for high-tier international weapons cartels."
The words hung in the freezing air like lead weights.
"My father was a corporate industrialist," Adrian said, though his own voice sounded hollow in his ears.
"Your father was a monster disguised as a philanthropist," Ward countered bluntly.
"Luca was young, reckless, and full of moral outrage."
"He copied thirty gigabytes of shipping manifests and threatened to walk into the federal courthouse."
"He thought his own bloodline would protect him from his father's fury."
"He didn't realize Arthur Moretti cared more about his ledger than his children."
Adrian’s fingers trembled against the cold steel of his weapon.
"Luca called Victor that night."
"Luca trusted Victor," Ward explained, taking another slow step into the mausoleum.
"Victor tried to stop your father at the estate dinner."
"Victor begged Arthur to let the boy flee to Europe."
"Arthur nodded, smiled, poured Victor a glass of scotch, and dropped a paralytic sedative into the glass."
"By the time Victor woke up in the locked wine cellar, Luca's car had already been forced off the highway."
"Who cut the brake lines?" Adrian asked, his voice shaking.
"I did," Ward confessed in a whisper.
The silence that followed was suffocating.
Marcus cocked the hammer of his firearm with an audible click.
Adrian’s vision blurred with red-hot fury.
"You killed my brother," Adrian whispered.
"I tampered with the rear brake caliper so the warning light on the dashboard would illuminate," Ward said desperately.
"I wanted Luca to be terrified and pull over into a service station before he reached the state turnpike."
"I left the handwritten warning inside his watch case because I couldn't approach him directly under Arthur's surveillance."
"I thought the boy would see the fluid leak on the garage floor and take a company sedan instead."
"He never checked the underside of the car," Ward continued, tears cutting through the grime on his cheeks.
"He drove like a madman into the storm because he knew Arthur’s men were pursuing him from behind."
"And when the car plummeted down the embankment, your father ordered me to drive him to the crash site."
"Arthur wanted to look into his son’s eyes to see if the files had been shared."
"Luca told his father to go to hell."
"So Arthur pulled the trigger."
Adrian stared at the man who had served his family for a quarter of a century.
"Where is my father right now, Samuel?"
Ward reached slowly inside his heavy coat and pulled out an encrypted GPS keycard.
"Arthur didn't die of a stroke, Adrian."
"He staged his medical emergency to escape an imminent Department of Justice grand jury subpoena."
May you like
"He has been living inside a private island redoubt on Lake Superior under the name of Thomas Sterling."
"And Victor is currently locked in the cellar beneath that compound."
