Chapter 12 - THE PRISON VISIT AND THE REBUFFED ULTIMATUM

The sterile, fluorescent-lit visiting room of the federal detention facility smelled heavily of industrial bleach and stagnant despair.

I sat on one side of the scuffed metal table, my hands folded neatly in my lap as I waited for the heavy steel door at the far end of the room to slide open.

When the guard finally pushed Vanessa into the room, the transformation was so jarring that it took my breath away for a fraction of a second.

Her expensive designer suit was gone, replaced by a coarse orange jumpsuit that hung loosely over her trembling frame.

Her flawless hair was pulled back into a messy, unwashed ponytail, and her face was entirely devoid of the expensive cosmetics she had used as a shield against reality.

She shuffled toward the table in heavy rubber prison sandals, her eyes bloodshot and swollen from hours of uninterrupted, hysterical crying.

When she saw me sitting calmly across from her, the remaining shreds of her arrogant composure shattered into violent, ugly rage.

“You!” Vanessa shrieked, lunging forward until the heavy metal chain bolted to the table snapped taut against her waist restraints. “You ruined everything! You stole my life, my husband, and my company!”

The two armed guards standing near the door immediately stepped forward, their hands resting on their utility belts as they barked warnings for her to sit down.

Vanessa slowly sank back onto the metal stool, her chest heaving as bitter tears streamed down her hollow cheeks.

“I didn't steal anything, Vanessa,” I said softly, my voice calm and steady amidst the hostile environment. “I simply reclaimed what was legally and morally mine from a thief.”

She glared at me with pure venom, her lips curling into a bitter, humorless sneer.

“Mom won't even take my phone calls,” Vanessa spat out, her voice cracking with profound self-pity. “She told me I brought shame upon our family name and that she never wants to see me again.”

“Because she cares more about our family name than she ever cared about either of us,” I replied, looking directly into her desperate eyes. “Just like you cared more about status than you did about human decency.”

Vanessa went completely silent, the harsh truth of my words landing like a physical blow against her fragile ego.

“I came here today to offer you a single, final choice, Vanessa,” I continued, pulling a document out of my leather folio and sliding it across the metal table. “If you sign these voluntary relinquishment papers for your remaining contested shell assets, I will instruct our legal team to petition the judge for a lenient sentencing recommendation.”

Vanessa stared down at the papers, her eyes scanning the legal clauses before she let out a harsh, hysterical laugh.

“You want me to beg?” she hissed, looking up with sudden defiance. “You want me to sign away my last remaining leverage so you can walk around as the triumphant queen bee?”

May you like

“I don't care whether you beg or not, Vanessa,” I replied, standing up slowly and smoothing down the front of my blazer. “It’s your choice whether you spend five years in federal prison or ten.”

Without waiting for her answer, I turned on my heel and walked toward the exit, leaving my disgraced sister alone in the dark shadows of her own making.
