Chapter 5 - The Broken Onyx

Nico stood under the flickering emergency halogen light of the Cicero vault, completely immobilized by Emma's accusation.

The dripping water sounded like miniature hammer strikes against the concrete floor.

"What did you just say?" Nico’s voice was barely a rasp.

Emma did not step back.

She did not flinch.

She held her smartphone like a weapon, her knuckles white, her gaze locked onto his right hand.

"My father remembers the ring, Nico."

"The family signet ring."

"The one with the black onyx stone ripped out of the silver prongs."

Nico looked down at his own fingers.

His skin was bare, marked only by faint, faded scars along the knuckles from a reckless youth he had spent a decade trying to outrun.

"Emma, I haven't worn that ring in ten years."

"Because you broke it three days before my father was framed!" Emma shouted, her voice echoing violently through the hollow, burnt-out bays.

"You were twenty-five years old."

"You were running with illegal street racers and private gambling rings in River North."

"You smashed your hand against a concrete pillar in a basement brawl on Ohio Street."

"The Chicago Tribune ran the photograph of you walking out of Northwestern Memorial Hospital."

"Your hand was bandaged, and your family ring was missing its stone."

Nico’s mind spun into a chaotic vortex of fragmented memories.

He remembered the fight.

He remembered the alcohol, the blinding lights of the emergency room, and the fury of his father when he returned home with split knuckles.

He remembered Julian Moretti ripping the signet ring off his finger in the library of the Gold Coast mansion.

You are not fit to wear this crest, his father had roared, his voice already weakened by the early stages of the cancer that would kill him eighteen months later.

You will earn this back when you learn what it means to protect this family, not disgrace it.

Nico grabbed his temples with both hands, his chest heaving as the past slammed into him like a freight train.

"My father took the ring from me, Emma."

"He took it three days before the audit."

"I never got it back."

Emma let out a savage, broken laugh that was closer to a sob.

"How convenient, Nico!"

"The almighty Julian Moretti took the ring, so you couldn't possibly be the man my father saw sneaking out of the executive suite after midnight!"

"Do you honestly expect me to believe that?"

"You were in debt!"

"You owed hundreds of thousands of dollars to high-stakes bookmakers in Macau and Las Vegas!"

"Twelve million dollars would have cleared your slate and saved you from being disowned by your grandfather!"

Nico dropped his hands, stepping forward until he was inches from her face.

His eyes burned with an intensity that made Emma’s breath catch in her throat.

"If I stole that money, why would I bring you here?"

"Why would I authorize the release of the Cicero archives?"

"Why would I grant Arden Ridge observer status after your legal takeover collapsed forty minutes ago?"

"Because you didn't know your uncle was sloppy enough to leave the magnetic tapes behind!" Emma screamed back, her tears finally cutting through the soot on her cheeks.

"You thought the evidence was destroyed ten years ago!"

"You came here to make sure the fire finished the job!"

"I didn't order this fire!" Nico roared, his voice shaking the metal beams above them.

"Look at this place!"

"Whoever did this used military-grade thermite."

"They stole the magnetic tapes from Safe 4B because they knew those tapes would expose the real thief!"

Nico reached into his coat pocket, pulling out his personal phone.

He brought up the burner text message he had received in the elevator and thrust the screen in front of Emma’s face.

"Read it!"

Emma blinked through her tears, focusing on the small glowing screen.

THE BOY WITH THE ONYX RING ALREADY KNOWS WHAT HAPPENED IN 2016.

Emma looked from the screen back to Nico’s tormented expression.

"Who sent this to you?"

"I don't know," Nico said, his voice dropping into a desperate, furious whisper.

"It came from an untraceable encrypted relay five minutes after we left the boardroom."

"Someone wants you to believe I did it, Emma."

"Someone wants us tearing each other apart in these ashes while they walk away with the evidence."

Emma stood frozen, the logical gears of her trained financial mind fighting against ten years of accumulated grief.

The text message was deliberate.

It was timed perfectly to coincide with the arson and her father’s sudden recollection.

It was designed to create an airtight loop of suspicion around Nico.

"If you didn't have the ring," Emma said slowly, her voice trembling, "then where did your father put it?"

Nico’s eyes widened as a horrifying realization struck him like a physical blow.

"The library safe."

"In the Gold Coast house."

"Only two people had the combination to that safe after my father was hospitalized."

Emma stepped closer, her anger shifting into a razor-sharp focus.

"Who had the combination, Nico?"

"My father's personal executor."

Nico swallowed hard, his throat dry as sandpaper.

"Michael."

Emma’s eyes narrowed into slits of ice.

"Your uncle had the ring."

"And Michael was the CFO who controlled the budget lines, suppressed Martin Lewis’s audit, and signed Steven Marsh’s severance package."

Before they could speak another word, the sound of heavy boots sloshing through the water echoed from the main entrance of Bay Eight.

Nico pulled Emma behind the twisted frame of a metal shelving unit, his hand dropping instinctively toward the small tactical knife he carried in his pocket.

Two men in dark windbreakers and tactical caps emerged from the smoke, carrying heavy black duffel bags.

They were not firefighters.

They were not police officers.

They were systematically checking the collapsed shelves with high-powered flashlights, ensuring that nothing legible remained in the debris.

One of the men paused near the charred remains of Bay Seven, speaking into a secure radio headset.

"The Cicero site is scrubbed."

"The primary paper ledgers are incinerated."

"We have the physical drives from Safe 4B in the vehicle."

The man listened for a moment to the voice on the other end of the line, then nodded.

"Understood."

"We are heading to the Calumet slip now to meet Steven Marsh for the handoff."

"The girl and the Moretti boy are still tied up in the board room with corporate legal."

"They won't know the facility is compromised until the fire department files their preliminary report tomorrow morning."

Emma’s fingers dug into Nico’s forearm with bruising force.

Her eyes were wide with shock.

The men didn't know Nico and Emma were inside the vault.

They thought their arson had gone undetected by executive management.

And they had just spoken the one name that could unravel the entire conspiracy:

Steven Marsh.

The internal IT director who had vanished ten years ago.

The man who was currently waiting at an abandoned industrial slip on the Calumet River with the stolen magnetic tapes.

Nico leaned his head close to Emma’s ear, his warm breath brushing against her temple.

"Do you still think I'm the one who ordered this?" he whispered.

Emma looked at the two armed men in the shadows, then looked back at Nico.

The doubt was still there, carved deep by a decade of agony.

Yet beneath the doubt, she saw the undeniable reality of the trap they were both caught in.

"No," Emma whispered back, her voice barely a breath.

"You're not that good of an actor."

"What do we do?"

Nico pulled his phone out, setting it to silent mode.

"We let them leave."

May you like

"We follow them to the Calumet River."

"And we take back those tapes before Steven Marsh disappears for another ten years."
