Chapter 4 - THE AUDIT AT TABLE ONE

Christopher shot out of his chair like an uncoiled spring, his face mottled with purple rage as he pointed a trembling finger at our son.
"Shut your mouth, Luke! You are an ungrateful, mentally unstable child who knows nothing about this corporation!"
"Security, remove him from the stage this instant!" Christopher roared, looking desperately toward the perimeter guards.
Not a single guard moved.
Standing beside the main entrance was Marcus Vance, the head of private security for Grand Horizon, his arms folded across his chest.
Marcus had served my father for two decades before Christopher ever set foot inside the executive boardroom.
Marcus looked directly at Christopher, shook his head with utter disgust, and remained stationed firmly beside the heavy double doors.
Luke did not even blink at his father’s outburst, standing unmovable beneath the harsh white spotlight of the stage.
"You should really check your corporate email before you issue commands to security, Dad," Luke said calmly.
Luke raised the leather portfolio, opened the first tab, and looked down at Eleanor Vance and the other institutional board members.
"At four thirty this afternoon, a certified emergency proxy session was filed with the California Secretary of State."
"The intellectual property patents that generate eighty-two percent of Grand Horizon's annual revenue were never corporate assets."
"They were held in the Sterling-Albright Family Heritage Trust, managed exclusively under my mother’s maiden name."
Luke turned the page, his voice echoing with absolute legal precision throughout the packed, breathless ballroom.
"My mother executed an irrevocable assignment of all trust assets to an independent operating entity forty-eight hours ago."
"Christopher Albright's employment contract explicitly states that his position as Chief Executive is contingent upon maintaining licensing rights to those patents."
"Those licensing rights were revoked at six o’clock this evening due to gross material breach and attempted corporate theft."
Eleanor Vance immediately reached into her evening clutch, pulled out her reading glasses, and unlocked her tablet.
Her eyes darted across the official SEC filing notifications already populating the national corporate registry databases.
"My god, Christopher," Eleanor whispered, her voice carrying across the silent, horrified tables.
"The board's shares just lost seventy percent of their collateral value because you don't even own the underlying technology."
Brenda Vance lunged forward, grabbing Christopher’s tuxedo sleeve with claws of desperation.
"Christopher, tell them he's lying! Tell them we have the offshore authorization documents!" Brenda shrieked, her facade crumbling into panic.
"We signed the Delaware agreements yesterday! The sixty-eight million is already clearing through the European clearinghouses!"
Luke smiled, a cold, humorless expression that sent a visible shudder down Brenda’s spine.
"Thank you for confirming the Delaware transaction on a hot microphone in front of three hundred witnesses, Brenda," Luke said softly.
He tapped the screen of the tablet he carried, and the eighty-foot display behind him updated instantly with blinding speed.
The screen transformed into an intricate forensic accounting diagram, complete with bank routing numbers, offshore LLC shells, and wire transfer logs.
"Over the past twelve months, Brenda Vance systematically opened four intermediary corporate accounts in the Cayman Islands."
"She used my father's forged executive sign-off to divert capital allocated for the employee pension fund and regional development grants."
"Sixty-eight million, four hundred and twenty thousand dollars was systematically siphoned from Grand Horizon’s primary treasury."
"And where did that money go?" Luke asked, his eyes sweeping across the elite members of the financial community.
A PDF document expanded on the massive screen, displaying an international yacht purchase contract and a deed to a villa in Lake Como.
The names listed on the ownership registry were Christopher Albright and Brenda Vance.
The date of the final signing was scheduled for nine o’clock tomorrow morning in Zurich.
The gasps from the audience transformed into a rising roar of indignation and fury from senior corporate executives.
"You stole from the pension reserve?" Arthur Sterling shouted, slamming his fist onto Table One so hard the silverware jumped.
"My father built that reserve to protect the warehouse workers in Oakland, Christopher! You absolute, unmitigated coward!"
Christopher stumbled backward, his thighs hitting the edge of his chair, nearly sending him sprawling onto the floor.
"It was an investment strategy! Arthur, listen to me, it was an arbitrage vehicle designed to yield twelve percent returns!"
"Don't bother lying to Arthur, Dad," Luke interrupted, his voice cutting through the rising pandemonium like a siren.
"The federal authorities have already frozen all four offshore accounts as of thirty minutes ago."
"The sixty-eight million dollars has been intercepted and returned to the primary Sterling-Albright reserve."
"You have zero dollars in Delaware, zero dollars in Zurich, and your personal credit lines have been suspended by every major bank in the state."
Brenda dropped Christopher’s arm as if his flesh had suddenly caught fire, her eyes wide with unadulterated, selfish terror.
She looked down at the champagne gown, then at the diamonds at her ears, realizing the horrific, inescapable trap closing around her.
"I... I was only following Christopher’s instructions!" Brenda stammered, turning toward the board members with tears spilling down her foundation.
"He promised me he was getting a divorce! He told me Vivian was mentally incompetent and that I had to help him protect the assets!"
"You ungrateful, deceitful snake!" Christopher snarled, turning on Brenda with savage, bared teeth.
"You came to me begging for money! You planned the tea! You brought the sedatives into my house!"
"You told me Vivian would sleep for twenty-four hours while we finalized the board signatures!"
The entire ballroom descended into a deafening storm of shouts, flashing cameras, and corporate fury.
Reporters pushed past the velvet stanchions, shoving heavy television camera lenses directly into Christopher and Brenda’s faces.
"Mr. Albright, are you facing federal fraud charges?"
"Miss Vance, did you knowingly drug Vivian Albright to steal her jewelry?"
"Is Grand Horizon entering emergency Chapter 11 bankruptcy tonight?"
Luke stood on the stage, watching the two parasites devour each other under the glare of their own stolen spotlight.
He did not gloat; he simply lowered the microphone and turned toward the backstage wings.

"Bring the car around to the front," Luke spoke into his earpiece.
"My mother is ready to arrive."
