Chapter 6 - A New Dawn

The fallout was spectacular. The police arrived at the gala before I had even left the parking lot. They didn't arrest Bennett that night, but the FBI raided his office the following morning. Fraud across state lines, embezzlement, and tax evasion.

Margot’s plea deal was entirely taken off the table. The District Attorney, having seen the footage broadcast to the entire city's elite, pushed for maximum sentencing. She was convicted of aggravated assault and sentenced to three years in a state penitentiary. When the verdict was read, she looked back at the gallery, searching for Bennett. He wasn't there.

Bennett was busy fighting his own battles. The foundation ousted him. His assets were frozen. Evelyn absolutely destroyed his legal team in the divorce proceedings. I got everything. Not that I needed his money, but I made sure he had nothing left to fight with. He ended up taking a plea deal for the fraud charges, resulting in a five-year federal prison sentence.

He wrote me a letter once, from his cell. He begged for forgiveness. He blamed Margot. He blamed the stress. I didn't read past the first paragraph. I burned it in the fireplace of my new home.

Three weeks after the gala, my water broke. I was sitting in the sunroom of the house my father had helped me buy, a beautiful place with a sprawling garden. The delivery was long, exhausting, but utterly peaceful. There was no drama. No screaming matches. Just the quiet strength of the women around me, and my father pacing the waiting room.

When they finally placed her on my chest, my heart expanded in ways I didn't know were possible. She had a tuft of dark hair and furious, bright eyes. She was beautiful. She was safe.

I named her Clara. It means "clear" and "bright." Because that was what my life had finally become.

Two years have passed since that day in the hospital hallway. I took over the foundation, officially renaming it the Halloway Women's Trust. Every cent goes exactly where it is supposed to go. We built a new wing at St. Jude’s for domestic abuse survivors. Chief Miller cut the ribbon with me.

Sometimes, when I watch Clara running through the garden, laughing as she chases butterflies, I think back to that moment on the cold hospital floor. They had tried to break me. They had expected me to shatter into a million compliant pieces. Instead, they gave me the exact clarity I needed to forge a sword and cut them out of my life forever.

Margot thought she had won. Bennett thought he was untouchable. But they forgot one fundamental truth about a mother. When you threaten her child, you don't just wake a victim. You wake a force of nature.

And I am, finally, exactly where I belong.
