Chapter 1 - The Shattered Porcelain

The silence that followed Stellan’s words was not the polite, comfortable quiet of a well-bred dinner party. It was a vacuum. It sucked the air from the room, leaving everyone breathless and staring.
Aurelia’s fork was still resting against the edge of her plate where she had dropped it, a stark contrast to the perfect symmetry of the table setting. Her fiancé, a man whose entire personality was built on being the smartest person in any room, looked utterly lost.
"Stellan," I said again, my voice barely above a whisper. "Sit down."
"No, Rowan. Not tonight," he repeated, his gaze sweeping the table. He wasn't looking at them like family anymore. He was assessing them like a threat, like hostiles who had crossed a line he was sworn to defend.
Aunt Maribel’s mouth opened and closed. For the first time in her life, she had no script. Her perfectly manicured hand fluttered toward her pearls and then dropped to the table, her knuckles white.
"Stellan, darling, you’ve had too much wine," Maribel finally managed, her voice trembling as she tried to force a laugh. It came out sounding like breaking glass. "You’re confusing your poor cousin with someone else. Rowan works in the administrative pool."
May you like
"She works at Joint Special Operations Command," Stellan said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying the weight of a judge reading a verdict. "And you wouldn’t know the difference between an administrative pool and a classified briefing if it bit you, Mother."
The color drained entirely from Maribel’s face. The room remained perfectly, terribly still. I looked at the drop of gravy on my plate. It had finally reached the edge and fallen onto the blue flowers. The illusion of my quiet, unremarkable life was falling right along with it.
