Chapter 3 - The Arrival

The laughter around the fire pit died instantly.
The family turned their heads, squinting into the blinding glare of the headlights.
“Are you expecting someone?” Barbara asked Bradley, her voice laced with sudden anxiety.
“No,” Bradley stammered, looking at me. “What the hell did you do, Maddie?”
I didn't answer. I just watched as the doors of the vehicles opened.
The lead vehicle was a sleek black SUV.
Arthur stepped out, immaculate in a dark overcoat, holding a thick manila folder.
Behind him parked a local police cruiser. Two uniformed officers stepped out, adjusting their belts.
The third vehicle was a massive, heavy-duty tow truck, its diesel engine rumbling ominously in the quiet mountain air.
Arthur walked straight through the side gate and onto the patio, the officers trailing slightly behind him.
Barbara's face changed instantly.
The smug, arrogant mask melted away, replaced by pure, unadulterated shock.
Because she recognized him.
Arthur had been the lawyer who bailed Barbara out of a messy, borderline-fraudulent tax situation three years ago.
He knew all her secrets.
And suddenly, nobody was laughing anymore.
“Good evening, Maddie,” Arthur said respectfully, completely ignoring the twenty stunned faces around him.
“Arthur. Thank you for coming so quickly,” I said.
Bradley stepped forward, his face flushed red with alcohol and anger.
“Arthur? What are you doing here? Maddie, why are the cops here? Are you insane?”
Arthur didn't look at Bradley. He opened the folder.
“As the legal representative for Madison Hayes and her corporate entities, I am here to execute a formal termination of stay,” Arthur announced, his voice projecting clearly.
“What?” Bradley's father yelled. “You can't do that! We're on vacation!”
“This property was leased exclusively under Madison's name,” Arthur explained coldly.
“Due to a breach of safety and a physical assault on the leaseholder, the property manager has revoked all guest privileges. You have exactly twenty minutes to vacate the premises.”
“Assault?!” Bradley laughed nervously, looking at the police officers. “Officers, this is a misunderstanding! It was a family joke. We just threw her in the pool!”
One of the officers stepped forward, his expression stone-cold.
“Sir, the leaseholder has requested a civil standby for your immediate eviction. If you do not gather your belongings and leave, you will be arrested for trespassing.”
Panic erupted.
Cousins started murmuring. Barbara gasped, clutching her chest dramatically.
“We can't leave!” Barbara shrieked. “It's ten o'clock at night! Where are we supposed to go?”
“That is not my client's concern,” Arthur replied flatly.
“Furthermore,” Arthur continued, pulling a stack of papers from the folder, “I have repossession orders for the two vehicles parked in the driveway.”
Bradley froze. “What? My truck? You can't take my truck!”
“The 2024 Ford F-150 and the 2023 Lexus SUV,” Arthur read from the paper.
“Both titles are held by Hayes Consulting LLC. As of tonight, your company vehicles are being reclaimed due to unauthorized use by non-employees.”
Arthur signaled toward the driveway.
The tow truck operator began lowering the heavy steel lift.
“Maddie, stop this right now!” Bradley yelled, taking a step toward me.
His fists were clenched.
Instantly, both police officers rested their hands on their holsters.
“Take another step, sir, and you'll be leaving in handcuffs,” the officer warned.
Bradley stopped dead in his tracks.

He looked at me, his eyes wide with a mixture of terror and disbelief.
The man who had pushed me into the freezing water just twenty minutes ago was suddenly drowning.
